Superb 200 Year-Old Farmhouse, Southwest France

Bedrooms 4
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 6 nights

About the property

Farmhouse, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

The approach to the house goes along fields of sunflowers, corn and strawberries, then crosses an old bridge over the Canal Lateral. The canal, which runs along the back of the house, has a shaded lane that is wonderful for cycling or walks. Guests are welcomed by our wonderful caretaker, Madame Gaëlle Faugeres, who will show them around, cleans the house once a week and is always available to answer any questions. Her husband, Nicolas Chabrerie, maintains the grounds and the pool.

From the front door there's a country lane, bordered by sunflower and corn fields, that leads to the road to the village of Damazan, just five minutes away. In front of the house is a large lawn with an old stone bench and a swing. Around to the side of the house are a vegetable garden and parking area. A long stone terrace, partially covered, extends along the rear of the house. There is a table and chairs for outdoor dining, overlooking the canal. Past an old stone well and down the stairs is another dining or reading area with table and chairs and a barbecue setup. A few more steps down is the pool, with chaises lounges and deck chairs. This private area is surrounded with flowering trees and flowers.

We are near several of “the most beautiful villages in France,” among them Pujols, Penne, Bazas and Vianne.

The spacious, two-story high living room has magnificent timbers and beams and a 17th Century fireplace. French doors lead to the terrace overlooking the canal. The dining room, adjacent to the living room, has a traditional farm table which seats eight comfortably. French doors lead to the front lawn with a swing set and a vegetable garden nearby.

Stairs from the dining room lead to a mezzanine with a large convertible sofa, a desk and chairs for reading. There's a 'French blue and yellow' kitchen with a round table and everything needed for cooking. French doors lead to the dining terrace outside.

Just off the entryway there's a large study with tiled floors. French doors lead from the study to the terrace and a view of the bridge and fields beyond.

The Master Bedroom has a queen-size double bed and built-in armoire. Bedroom #2 has a queen-size double bed and large armoire. Bedroom #3 has a single bed and armoire. Bedroom #4, upstairs from the study, has a single bed and a view of the canal. There are two full bathrooms, one with bathtub, one with shower.

About Chiz Schultz

I am a Clinical psychologist with practices in New York City and Nyack, NY. My husband is a film and television producer who also teaches at The New School University and Montclair State University.. We try to get to Maison du Canal for two weeks in the spring and for most of August. Our stays there give us a way of life, a tranquility and a joy that help restore us and sustain us during the year. When we get there we feel we're home. The quiet, the light, the fields around us, the food, all produce a joy and tranquility and we're able to forget the pressures and work we've come from.

Chiz Schultz purchased this farmhouse in 2000

Why Chiz Schultz chose Puch-d'Agenais

My wife and I fell in love with France over twenty years ago. We began renting houses for our vacations in Southwest France, beginning in 1995. In 2000 we began our search, on the Internet, for a house to call our own. We visited twenty-five houses and fell in love with the last one we saw, Maison du Canal. We love the fact that we're surrounded by fields, farms and small villages and that it's so peaceful. There are almost no tourists. But within a half-hour we can be in cities such as Agen and Villeneuve-sur-Lot, full of fine shops, museums, bookstores and restaurants. Within three-to-four hours we can be hiking in the Pyrenees and Paris is a three-hour train ride away.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Staying at our farmhouse is like going back into time and another way of life. We furnished the house with furniture, paintings and all kinds of objects we discovered in brocantes and antique stores that we visited after buying the house. But we also wanted comfort in the couches and beds and up-to-date equipment for the kitchen. We have a Guest Book in the house with our favorite restaurants, villages, churches, shops and places to visit. Living there we're exposed to a peace and a different kind of light that we often see reproduced in French paintings. We love the outdoor markets with all kinds of fresh vegetables, spices, paella, cheeses, meats and flowers. There's a wide selection of restaurants, most of which are very reasonable. Four of the restaurants near us are situated right on the canal. The villagers are friendly and helpful and we've made several close friends there. Whether it's long walks along the canal, boating on the canal, having breakfast on the outside terrace, swimming in the pool or getting vegetables from our garden, we really enjoy every minute. Those who have rented our house through the years - professors, journalists, artists, ambassadors, writers, high school teachers, retired couples (with and without children and grandchildren), therapists and business owners, among others - have sent us glowing thank-you letters and some have been back each year.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The house and property are picture perfect. Your hospitality quite amazing. We all keep discovering different things inside and out that cause us to stop and say "come see this!" (I am in awe of the linens for one, lovely)

We were wondering how do you ever leave?

Once again thank you for sharing your wonderful farmhouse with the rest of us. We are all so happy here.
