Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday home in Arroyo Seco - Casita Des Montes

House, 1 Bedroom (Queen) + 2 Convertible beds, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Here in Arroyo Seco and Taos the weather has been lovely with warm days and sunny skies so start thinking about your visit during the upcoming late fall and winter skiing and holiday seasons. And there is plenty to do. The Taos area is abundant with seasonal activities for the whole family. The Casita is located 1 mile west of the wonderful village of Arroyo Seco, 20 minutes north of Taos, 15 minutes from Taos Ski Valley which has some of the steepest and most challenging terrain in the country and where you can access trails to the highest point in the state. The ski valley has some of the most lush and cool creek side trails in the area and only a 15 minute drive from Arroyo Seco. This adorable Casita is lovingly furnished with Asian, South American and Native American touches, original artwork, and all the amenities to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. Cathedral ceilings and traditional vigas give this house a sense of spaciousness and New Mexico character.

Stroll the apple orchard, sip a margarita, a hot cocoa or some iced tea while watching the spectacular New Mexico sunsets on the front porch, or just relax after a day of skiing or hiking. Even at this time of year you can don a fleece jacket and take your coffee or tea to the back portal where you can watch the early morning light play across the mountains as the bunnies enjoy their breakfast. This home combines high quality amenities (such as a very comfortable queen mattress with organic cotton linens and memory foam topper) with family affordability. Whether exploring the town of Taos, the nearby beautiful mountain ranges, or some of the best skiing in the world, Casita Des Montes offers you a cozy, affordable, and accessible home away from home.

Rent the Casita and the 'Green' straw bale house right next door for family gatherings or for celebrations with friends and we will give you a special rate. See # 194842 for details about this property.

The caretaker is the owner's aunt Linda and will help in any way she can, or offer advice or information on all things in the area, from where to eat or shop, to the best hiking trails.

If you visit once, you'll want to come back again and again.

About Lorca

Welcome to Northern New Mexico! I am a licensed massage therapist specializing in Maya abdominal massage. I have two boys who love the activities available in Northern New Mexico.

Why Lorca chose New Mexico

The Casita is on family property, passed down to me by my father who planted the orchard you will see as you enter the property.

What makes this house unique

Our favorite things to do when we come to stay is to river raft, hike, and visit a most wonderful toy store in Taos called Twirl. Just relaxing and watching the marvelous sunsets is reason enough to visit as often as we can. I have made so many wonderful friends since my family discovered the Taos area in the early '70's and continue to visit and catch up with them each time we come back. And then there is that magical light on the mountains that is a source of constant wonderment and joy! I invite you to visit us at Casita des Montes and see what we mean!

Guestbook comments from the owner

What an amazing place - the town, the people, the casita! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Lovely experience, eager to return.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved Casita Des Montes. We have stayed in Taos and/or Arroyo Seco many times but this was one of the most pleasant settings we have been in. The house was very comfortable with beautiful pottery, blankets, and art along with comfortable couches and rustic furniture. THe pottery was so nice that I went to the Stephen Kilborn gallery to see about buying some. The mix of pottery with everyday dishes was really nice. We had our two dogs with us and they were able to "run around" the property without being on leashes. The snow inhibited them a bit (they were small schnauzers) but they still had a lot to explore. I worried about them barking with the caretakers so close next door, but they really only barked when they saw someone they didn't know (Lawrence-caretaker) or neighborhood dogs or the occasional bunny in the surrounding fields. There was a lot of snow the last couple of days of our trip but the driveway and walkways were kept shoveled and we had no issues. The house was warm and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and we had everything that we needed. The only two slight issues that we had were that we worried about the dogs because the caretakers house was so close and we didn't want them disturbed, and the hot water heater was not hot enough for two back to back showers. Not being in any type of hurry, it wasn't a big deal. However, it could be. We loved the house, the property and the location. We skied, we went into both Taos and Arroyo Seco for dinner and shopping, and it was easy to get anywhere from Apple Hill Farm. A tip for other travelers: we went to see the tribal Buffalo Dances at the Taos Pueblo and it was truly an experience that I would recommend. It was a great trip. We would stay at Casita Des Montes again.

wonderful house in New Mexico

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the property and hopefully there will be more to come. The house is as advertised, if not better. The furnishings and decor are comfortable and attractive. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking and the pantry and refrigerator are also stocked with staples like olive oil, coffee, tea, flour and spices. The care taker (Linda) is very thoughtful and helpful. The condition of the home is spotless. She was also extremely gracious and came to the rescue when a member of our party had a minor emergency. We have been coming to the Taos area for 35 years and have stayed in a wide range of accommodations from the hostel and motels to condos and other VRBO properties and this is by far our favorite place to stay. I genuinely can not say enough nice things about our experiences at the Casita.

Feels Like Home

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Casita des Montes for one month during the 2015 ski season was what brought me to the village of Arroyo Seco. I wanted to be close to Taos Ski Valley (about 10 minutes away) and, also, be reasonably close to other people. The casita is the smallest of a 3 house compound known as Apple Hill Farm. It was everything I wanted and more. Immaculately clean with a large living room, dining area and kitchen that spanned the full length of one wall, it was well stocked with cooking necessities and dinnerware. The bathroom and bedroom were very adequate and included an HE clothes washer and dryer. All laundry supplies (organic) were provided. To top it all off the decor included lovely prints and photographs as well as southwestern furnishings. It was a wonderfully cozy and tastefully decorated casita - everything needed to be comfortable and feel like home. I loved it! Linda, the caretaker, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. Arroyo Seco, the neighboring village, had many shops of interest. I enjoyed shopping at Sol Food, the local organic grocery store, Taos Cow with its homemade ice cream, Rottenstone Pottery and Weaving Southwest. What a fabulous environment! I also attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church, which had beautiful stained glass and very friendly parishioners. How blessed I was to be in this unique little community and, also, be so close to Taos Ski Valley. I definitely plan to spend a significant amount of the 2016 winter months here.

This is a very comfortable and and inviting home. Linda the manager is exceptional. I very much appreciate that is not a stripped down rental. It feels just like a good friend is letting you use their home.

Iccredible stay in a wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

Last fall when my husband and I made reservations at Casita Des Montes, our intention was to stay for one month and be joined by our friends for two of the weeks. Between fall and our planned April vacation our entire lives changed when my mother had a serious illness and consequently needed to sell her home and move in with us. This move necessitated us selling our home and moving as well. In the end we were only able to spend two of our planned four weeks at the casita. Our experience was unique in all the vrbo rentals in which we have stayed both domestic and abroad. Throughout the many changes in our plans, Linda, the property manager was in frequent contact with us via email. She was very prompt with her responses and incredibly informative and helpful.

Upon arrival, Linda introduced us to the casita and gave us tips about the "personality" of the house. One of the best features of our stay was having Linda right there on the property. She is a wealth of great information about the area and if she doesn't know the answer to a question she makes every effort to find out. We liked Linda instantly and invited her over for dinner one night during which we picked her brain mercilessly about Arroyo Seco and it's environs. It was due to her knowledge of the area that we visited several really neat places we had never before been to in spite of numerous vacations in Taos.

One of the places we visited was Wild Rivers where the Red and Rio Grande rivers converge. It was beautiful! Another place we went three times was the road from Pilar through the gorge that runs beside the Rio Grande called the Rio Grande del North National Monument. While there we saw two types of ducks none of us had ever seen before as well as all the beautiful scenery. Because we were unable to locate the petroglyphs, Linda took time out of her day and accompanied us on a two and a quarter mile hike during which we witnessed a family of big horn sheep as well as the elusive petroglyphs.

The casita was perfect in every way. The kitchen amenities were second to none, including great knives which always seem to be lacking in every other place we have stayed.

We definitely intend to return to Casita Des Montes and cannot recommend it highly enough. If you go, you will love the casita, the property, the little town of Arroyo Seco and especially the sunsets over distant mountains. Go ahead, make that reservation, you will not be sorry.

Holiday in the high desert

  • 5 of 5

We spent the winter holidays in Casita des Montes and loved the entire experience. The casita is placed in one of the most beautiful locations possible, and is a short walk to the inviting and very fun town of Arroyo Seco. It is close to Taos, cross country and down hill skiing, and the wonderful hiking trails at Wild and Scenic Rivers. We have stayed in many vacation rentals, and I have to say that this one is the most thoughtfully and beautifully managed ever. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home and for the care you provide to the space and to the guests. We hope to return as soon as possible.
