Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Den + Treehouse, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3-4)

The 'Hummingbird Cottage (dubbed by our guests) is a Storybook Property above the Heart of Downtown Ventura. Detached Guest house with private bath, den and kitchenette on property with owner's main house. Treehouse is also a separate structure and sleeps one.

Private lush flower garden with full mountain views and a peek-a-boo of the ocean with the Channel Islands on clear days, deer grazing at Grant park at sunrise on the hill. Just steps to Historic Main street and it's trendy shops and restaurants, night clubs and galleries to fresh produce at Farmer's market on Saturday mornings. Take the beach cruisers down miles of boardwalk past Surfer's Point, the Fairgrounds, several campgrounds, the longest pier in California to the Harbor and beyond. Hiking, Surfing, and nightlife are all walking distance. Ojai and Santa Barbara are quick drives away. The rooms are very small but charming, the accommodations are for people who want to explore what the area has to offer. Fire Pit, Fountain, Barbecue, Porch Swing, it is romantic and subtle for the perfect get-away. So close to what you wanna see but feels like the perfect jungle Hide-Away.

About Sandra

I am a business owner, a mom and a former art director in the film industry. I love Ventura and all it has to offer in the way of daytime adventure and nature, nightlife and art. Forbes magazine lists Ventura as one of the top four places to live in the U.S.! I agree. I have been surprised and pleased with the lovely guests we have had to enjoy the property and all Ventura has to offer..

Sandra purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Sandra chose Ventura

Just one hour North of Hollywood, one half hour South of Santa Barbara, and twenty minutes West of Ojai, we have the best of the ocean, the city and the mountains right here and a quick hop away. Pets are also welcome in the cottage. Securely fenced and ready to roam, the large garden and wild lower yard are, as recent guests described it, 'Dog Heaven'.

What makes this cottage unique

The treehouse is tiny and enchanting. Completely wired, WIFI friendly and heated, it is perfect for naps for adults or children to sleep in. Best view on the property of the green, untouched mountains to our North. Some guests have had to draw straws to determine who gets the treehouse!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the oasis you provided here for us. The little touches, the secluded forested feel, the sound of the birds and fountain at sunrise - all contributed to the complete vacation we were seeking. The nap I took in the treehouse one afternoon will stay with me until next time we visit. So tranquil! Thank you, Sandra. We are already looking forward to next Fall here in beautiful, friendly Ventura at the cottage.

Gratefully relaxed!

  • 4 of 5

This is a very sweet and adorable , SMALL, cottage. If you are interested in a “tiny house” living experience- this is a great place! As far as convenience and location to downtown Ventura- it can’t be beat! We walked to town, eateries, and the beach daily. Plus, there is an amazing park just up the street. This cottage is dog friendly with safe and secure fencing, and enough outdoor space to roam around. Parking can be a little challenging and you are expected to park on the street. We Were a little disappointed that there was not a BBQ available as we were planning on making most of our meals. The kitchen is quite small so I would plan on most big meals out. However there is a 2 burner stovetop, microwave, and toaster oven present. We spent our evenings out enjoying the fire in a free standing fire pit with ample wood supply. It is quiet, private, and the bird watching and sounds are truly magical.

Thank you to our gracious host for cookies and fresh fruit on arrival.

Great stay!

Charming, private, convenient

  • 4 of 5

Sandra’s Cottage is adorable! We stayed 3 nights with two small dogs and felt right at home. Very convenient location near downtown, easy parking, responsive host. Dish soap, cleaning supplies and an ice tray would’ve been appreciated, but no big deal. Overall a lovely place to stay!

Cozy retreat with room for improvement

  • 4 of 5

This cute unit is next to a 1920's era house in the foothills overlooking Ventura. Perhaps the most joyful part of this unit was watching all the small birds flitting in and out of surrounding trees into a burbling fountain to bath and cool themselves. The room layout is serviceable, and the full size bathroom is very nice. There's not a lot of space to hang clothes, though the raised bed provides space to stow luggage. The unit is not air-conditioned, but there are a couple of fans that adequately cool the unit.

Still, there could be some improvements:

1. The wi-fi signal from the main house is weak, and this could be resolved by having a WiFi range extender installed in the cottage.

2. The unit could have been prepared a little better before our arrival to ensure that all of the units features were functional.

2a. There were two remote controls whose batteries had died.

2b. The DishTV was not working at all and required a service call.

2c. The drinking water dispenser in the living room was empty.

2d. None of the cruiser bikes on site were functional. All had either flat tires or were severely rusted. There were two bike helmets and pump laying on the house's back deck, but it was unclear if these were for our use or not.

2e. There were a lot of cobwebs on the entry gate as well as around the external lights.

Owner's Response: Hello Edward, I am pleased that you enjoyed the location, view and amenities of the Hummingbird and do hope to accommodate you again soon. I was sorry to hear that you found inadequate issues as I truly pride myself in having an experience that my guests are wonderfully delighted with. I would like to address them so that I can strive to avoid any disappointments with guests in the future. The WIFI is actually U-verse with a booster so I am unsure about the weak signal as it is the first time I have had a complaint. I will contact ATT&T immediately to address this. It is true that the Cable was out upon your arrival but as soon as we ruled out that the batteries in the remote controls weren't dead as well as other troubleshooting, I put a call out to DISH and it was repaired the next day. (There were spare batteries in the desk as well as any other back up needs guests might have ie. lightbulbs, office supplies, stationary etc.) As soon as you mentioned the Arrowhead water cooler needing a refill bottle, I was able to replace it that same day. I do offer complimentary usage of the beach cruisers but was not aware that you wanted to use them. I do have a few bikes that need service but I also have two new bikes that I would have been happy to bring out for you upon request. That must have been frustrating for you to find bikes with flat tires and not knowing we had others in good shape. I will try to make the request and usage of the bikes more apparent in the future. The helmets and bike pump are there for guests to use as well as baskets, lights and locks. Lastly, it is true that there are cobwebs sometimes in the garden. Certainly I ensure that the interiors of both the cottage and treehouse are immaculate but cannot guaruntee that between weekly visits from my gardening team there will not be some around the property. I take all feedback from my guests with the utmost of seriousness and appreciate you taking the time to articulate what your experience was and any suggestions on improvements. If you should decide to visit us again, I assure you that these issues have been resolved. Thank you and, again, we hope to see you again soon. Warm regards, Sandra, Darbee and Oliver
