Stunning location: As the name suggests, Cliffhouse perches above the Caribbean Sea on the North West Coast of Jamaica, in a quiet fishing village called Cousin’s Cove. The property nestles in nearly 2 acres of tropical woodland with the house perched 10 meters from the cliff edge giving breathtaking views of the ever changing sea, the glorious evening sunsets and the moonshine dancing on the waves. The entrance to the property is dominated by a majestic bamboo tree that towers above the drive. Take a walk round the garden and you will find ackee, breadfruit, lime, grapefruit orange, banana, coconut and mango trees.
We have owned Cliffhouse for many years now, about 15 I think. We fell in love with this part of Jamaica after visiting and staying at a friends villa just on the other side of the bay. We have always loved Jamaican music and culture and Cousins Cove was everything we hoped it would be. A perfect slice of a true rural jamaican community unspoilt by the commercialism on some of the more well know parts of the island.
Nicholas Austin purchased this villa in 2000
Within days of first visiting and staying within the Cousins Cove community we felt at home. The people are so friendly and genuine, each time I went back I met more and more wonderful friends and it is they that made every trip so special. So much so that we had to buy our own property and once Cliffhouse became available to buy we had to make an offer! The property is a private villa, run by a team of locals that we have known since they were teenagers when used to come and hang with us to get free beers and listen to music and tell us all about there lives.
A truly beautiful and unspoilt part of Jamaica. Totally private and peaceful. If you are looking for bars and clubs then you need to head towards Negril, but if you are looking to get to know what Jamaican rural life is really like this is the place for you.
We had a wonderful time at the Cliff house. Everything about it was perfect, Dan had kept the whole thing a secret and told us we were going to Spain right up to the time of check in. The location was great too, so peaceful, I was always first up not wanting to waste one moment of our beautiful surroundings sitting in the hammock with my cup of tea looking out over the reef. The evenings also were amazing the beautiful fireflies and the sounds of the tree frogs.
O`neil, Angelita, Yogi were all wonderful, Vessel really looked after the boys and drove them where ever they wanted to go. We always enjoyed our walks down to the little store and of course the stop off at Bryron's bar on the way back. We had the best goodbye ever, Harvey our son, played his guitar (lots of Bob Marley stuff) and everyone in Bryrons joined in. We made some great friends and I`m sure we`ll be back. Thankyou so much .
The villa has amazing views!! The staff keeps house clean. Yogi is an unbelievable chef! Each dinner topped the one before!!! If you are looking for peace and relaxation...cliff house is for you!
I've never seen my family so sad that our vacation was over!...
Our week stay at the Cliffhouse was amazing!
The house was just like it was pictured, very roomy, plenty of space for everyone, right on the ocean, privately located and surrounded by fruit trees and ocean breezes. Lots of area to get away from each other, walk around the yard, hang out in a hammock, or sit in the veranda on the waterfront and enjoy your cocktail! The pool is huge and very refreshing! We would spend a couple of hours a day just hanging out in and by the pool, especially after being at the beach all day!! (Note: there is a good surround sound stereo system that you can plug into any phone/iPad/laptop and stream throughout the house and outside, which includes by the pool!). We never even turned on the TV while we were there, because there is pleanty to do and see! I mean, you have your own reef to explore!!!
One of our biggest pleasures I must say, was the people who took care of us and who really make Cliffhouse the gem of Negril! O'neil and his wife Angelita were great! O'neil picked us up and dropped us off at the airport, took us to Mayfield and Roaring River, also took us to 7mile beach three times, and to the local market to show us fresh fruit and help with negotiations! I would trust both of them with my family anytime! Their love of the island and house shows and made us feel very comfortable. Truly good people!! Thanks
Last but not least, Yogi!
I would say he is an absolute must!!
He cooked us breakfast and dinner every day/night we were there. He would go to find the freshest fish caught that day and make it that night for us in his own traditional Jamaican way! He also made us curry chicken and jerk chicken which were both mouth watering!! I can't even explain how good the food was and how enjoyable his presence was! He is true Jamaica and very knowledgable of his trade and all his ingredients! Everything he uses is locally grown, and organic! Just amazing...
We are so lucky to have found this home and the people that make you feel so comfortable that you don't want to leave!! That is a true vacation!
Also, thank you Nick for being so patient with us and so accessible during the booking process! You truly made it very easy and glad we chose your beautiful home for our amazing getaway! We will be back for sure!
PS: make sure you don't miss 7mile beach, Mayfield Falls, and bring mask/snorkel/fins for your private reef! Enjoy!
There are many great things about this property. Like most reviewers state, the good far exceeds the bad. That said, there are some things that should be taken with a grain of salt. Do not expect US/commercial world customer service. The Jamaican people definitely do things on their own time. The staff here were very good and helpful when asked. You will need to be proactive in everything that goes on though. Yogi is a phenomenal cook and we thoroughly enjoyed his meals. The views from this house are spectacular and can never be duplicated. Sunsets are beyond amazing here. The pool was enjoyed by our kids aged 2-6 and the house is great for kids as there is a large garden and an indoor outdoor set up. Snorkeling can be done right out of the backyard! This is an unbelievable treat! This house is not a luxurious property but it is kept clean and it is comfortable. I would say it is a shabby chic, retro seventies minimalistic vibe. Some things which may have been beneficial to the house would be a microwave, and a working dishwasher. But the kitchen does have a blender, full fridge/freezer, and ample cooking ware provided. You will leave this place and truly feel like you have experienced real Jamaica (as opposed to staying in an Americanized resort). The house is about 1 hour from Montego Bay and about 30 minutes to Negril 7 mile beach. It is not close to the city and is very secluded. The owner Nicholas is excellent at responding to questions/concerns and compensated us fairly after noting a failed dishwasher and tv. Would definitely recommend this place!
Beautiful location. Its a distance from Montego Bay- 1-2 hours depending upon traffic. The best features of the property- location, snorkeling from back yard and Yogi's meals!. Yogi is an eclectic character, don't let appearances fool you. He is smart, multi talented and very reliable his lobster, tuna and curried chicken were our favorites. ONeil and Anjelita are very nice and helpful. Property does need some maintenance but the owner Nick was gracious about lacking items- dishwasher, functioning TV. You have to be open minded about these issues.
Make sure to get your snorkeling gear. You can literally go from your backyard to the most picturesque snorkeling ever.
The property is beautiful. It sits on a cliff and has breathtaking views. It is most definitely in a very nice warm friendly fishing village.
The snorkeling and diving from the door steps of the house is just out of this world.
The garden, pool and tennis court are maintained very well. Yogi is an awesome cook and has an infectious outlook to life.
The housekeeping is done by Anjelita, who is very nice, sweet and always has a smile and kept the interiors spotless.
There are lots of games and other activities to keep you within the perimeters of the property. In general the outside of the house is just beautiful and everything the pictures show.
If you do want to go out, you can easily catch one of the route taxis for a very nominal amount right outside the property and go to Lucea or Negril for a quarter of the price charged by the Villa Manager. The reason I am not as positive as the rest is because the house is in need of some maintenance. It has plumbing issues with the bathrooms. The doors also would lock themselves. The dishwasher stopped working while we were there probably because of low water pressure and this in turn ended up not draining the water which was smelling by the end of our stay.
Nick the owner was very responsive to all the issues and compensated us for the problems we ran into.
I am not certain words can do justice the hospitality and comfort experienced at the Clifftop House. Yogi's jerk chicken is everything you have read about and more. Oneil and his beautiful wife were so gracious with their time and their advice. Thank you so very much for making our family reunion epic.
Cousin’s Cove is without doubt one of the more beautiful of all the coastal villages on the North West coast. You will find no tourist traps, only local bars and shacks run by local people who have lived there all their life. If you like to be away from the beaten track then this is where you will get as close to the real Jamaica as you can.
Set on the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea you can scuba dive, snorkel, fish and take boat trips up the coast. Nearby Negril offers everything you want from a resort from bars, restaurant to concerts on the beach, water sports all centered on the 7-mile beach.
Head into the interior behind the villa are you will find the ancient bat caves with cave markings and geological structures. You will find Sir Alexander Bustermante’s house, the beautiful Mayfield waterfalls, horse-riding, tube rafting and other outdoor activities.
