Post Maria Update

Our local friend Abdon, a devout Christian, came by before Maria and said, “Maria is nice lady. She’ll be gentle to us”. And sure enough, she was a no-blow. There was very little wind, significantly less than a tropical storm, and only a small amount of intermittent rain. The skies were powerful - dark and gray with an incredible vibe but nothing really happened. We had a hectic couple of days preparation and then - a day off as we relaxed, talked with friends, ate, slept, and generally enjoyed.

Now that Maria’s gone we are full tilt unpacking the property and bringing things back to normal. We’re almost there. The plants were hit hardest by Irma – most of the vegetation without leaves, we lost some trees and many of the trees tilted over. Luckily all the palm trees on the beach survived. But we’ve been able to bring the trees back (mostly) to vertical and the nature is just incredible how its springing back to life. Within a few days of Irma the plants started sprouting new leaves! Now, over two weeks later, the entire property is the most psychedelic green with new life everywhere. The color and vibrancy of the nature is just amazing. How do they do it? How do they know? Hopefully another few weeks and we’ll hardly know a hurricane has passed through.

Our buildings were amazingly spared. We had quite a few minor damages: roof tiles and gutters a few roof leaks that need repair and a couple of spots of ceiling drywall replacement, repainting of sandblasted areas. but otherwise no major damage.

We have two extra ‘crews’ here on the property when the hurricane hit - we had a group of friends from Europe who were working on a book with us, and we had a construction crew who were doing a renovation. Both groups really jumped in both before and after Irma. We can’t thank you all enough. You helped us so well prepare and so quickly get back on our feet!

We have been without electricity, Internet and TV. There are still poles down in Long Bay and it seems they may be that way for a while. That said, we have generators so we have power and are comfortable. The city water has been on throughout so no issues there, as well as having a full cistern. Our normal high speed internet is down but the cell phone internet works fine, if a bit slow - good for emails and Skype but expensive if you want to stream movies. No TV but we’ve plenty of downloaded movies.

We had our first kiting session yesterday. Yeah! Windguru shows the winds coming back this week to the normal trades so… lots of fun between the work sessions. The beach is beautiful as always. The sands have shifted a lot and we have new dunes. There is still some seaweed to rake out but that’s almost gone now too. And there is NO ONE on the beach in Long Bay. We are so much enjoying the quiet.

This part of the island is generally fine. Grace Bay is up and running again - they have electricity and internet there, the stores are open, the ships are coming in and the super market is fully stocked. I’m proud of our island’s infrastructure and its ability to withstand even a category 5 hurricane. I’m guessing we were impacted less than other islands because we have a newer infrastructure, probably better built, and as an upscale island, better engineering, equipment, management, etc.

There are still plenty of people in the less affluent areas who are struggling. Many houses without roofs or some houses completely destroyed. Fortunately, Fortis the electrical company is giving priority to these areas and many are having power again. The churches have been incredibly helpful with distributing food and household basics. Samaritan Purse a charity has been very active a good place to donate funds for those that have asked us. There has been no ‘civil disobedience’ as far as we know

This is a very special moment on the island and we find it a rich experience to be here right now.

For those of you who are scheduled to come down or are thinking to do a last minute – you are welcome. Esencia is up and running - guests have been coming - the vibe is peaceful and beautiful. We look forward to see you soon or the near future.

Esencia is for people who want to come back to themselves through being with nature in a serene, natural and pure environment. The Villa sits on a gated estate of 2.25 acres of pristine land with only two Villas within a mile. You often will not see any one on the beach for days, with only an occasional boat going by. There's almost always a cool breeze, you are 100 feet from the waters edge, and you are surrounded by lush green. The beach is pure white sand and is 4 miles long. The water is a gorgeous turquoise color, warm and gentle. You can spend hours comfortably in the water. The sea is shallow and safe for kids. There's a beautiful pool and hot tub nestled amongst the palms.

Villa Esencia: Villa Esencia is a 6000 sq foot villa with two, 2br, 2bath rental units and the owners unit. The layout is designed for privacy; Esencia 1 is on the North side of the villa, and Esencia 2 the South. Both units are first floor, directly on the beach. Units have partial ocean views from inside and full ocean views from the outside covered deck.

The suites are large and well-appointed. Each has two bedrooms, with two king beds. There is also the option of a 2nd bed in one bedroom as a kids bed. In addition, the living room sofa pulls out and can sleep 2, for a total possibility of 7 people.

Location: Esencia sits directly on the beach in Long Bay. Long Bay is a 4 mile pure white sand beach. It is generally undeveloped with long stretches of ocean fronting the wild vegetation. There are occasional large estates with a few 'island style' older homes nestled between. Its a very quiet area with low population density. Yet, it's only 5 minutes away by car from Grace Bay, with its shops, condo's and restaurants.

Why Ritama Davidson chose Long Bay

We were looking for a quiet, natural environment, close to nature and the sea, away from the buzz of city, road and people. This location fit that description perfectly. There was only one house nearby, no sounds except the wind, the trees and the sea.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a fabulous get-away for individuals, couples or families. The set-up is ideal - the villa is very private and has it's own patio area and Tiki-Hut. The shared pool and hot-tub is just steps away. The location is a short drive away from the more populated Grace Bay area. The beach is beautiful and most days you will have it entirely to yourself. The owners have thought of everything - all linens, and beach towels, kitchen appliances, an outdoor grill, beach chairs, and a car! There are two (2-person) sea kayaks available to use. The friendly owners are there if you need them. They have helpful restaurant and attraction suggestions.

This is the main kiteboarding beach of the island and we are setup for kiters with compressed air and 2 self-launch/landings as well as broad sandy setup areas. The waters here are shallow, warm and safe making it an ideal place to learn kiting yet with excellent conditions for advanced kiters.

Literally 30 steps from a private beach.

  • 4 of 5

Nice very private property with a private beach. Ocean is only 3 ft deep so my kids could walk out 10 yards without a problem. There was a private gazebo with tables and benches to just sit and relax. They have multiple kayaks and paddle boards for entertaining. You had to drive 10 min to the north side of the island for good snorkeling and food, but everything is so close by car it didn't matter. Also the north side is quite built up and crowded so we prefer being away from the people. But again, the north side is close that going to the snorkeling spots was quick. Decent kitchen and the market was 5-10 min away so we cooked on most days, but eating out or take out was close as well. Basically if you want privacy and time alone with family this is a great place to do that.

Beautiful Property

  • 5 of 5

The Property villas were laid out as though you were the only ones there. Pathways for each villa was surrounded with lovely trees, bushes and flowers creating a sense of division, of isolation. The villas are well appointed and you can tell the owners have thoughtfully decorated each unit. All villas were steps away from the beautiful beach. The beach is great for families with small children because the water is only 2-3 feet deep. It's mostly used for sail boarding. This property is well away from all the ruckus - perfect for a quite, rested vacation.

Penthouse VIlla

  • 5 of 5

My husband and two teenage children stayed in the Penthouse Villa (Karana Hall) this past week. The accommodations were outstanding. The interior furnishings and finishing details were all high end and the balcony (comfortable seating area, dining area, new grill, and additional room for several yoga mats) captured the beautiful view. The design, with large window or double front door, allowed for gorgeous views in almost every direction. The beach is a short walk down a path past an inviting private pool. We took advantage of the shaded cabanas (kids loved the hammocks), comfortable lounge chairs, hot tub, paddle boards, kayaks, and snorkel equipment.

The Villa is located in a serene natural setting and combines the best of both worlds - natural beauty and comfortable accommodations. The most exceptional property we have stayed in to date.

We were undecided between staying in a resort on Grace Bay Beach or the Villa Esencia. Everyone - including the teenagers who usually prefer more action - felt we had DEFINITELY made the best choice.

Ritama is a gracious and knowledge hostess! We want to return soon!

Could've been great without the roaches

  • 2 of 5

We rented the cottage for 10 days. The privacy of the cottage one can't compare. It's big enough for a couple, it's just like the pictures online. The safe isn't your normal standards(can't fit a 13" lap top). It's more for jewelry, which no one brings on vacation. The beach access through the jungle is nice. We preferred Long Bay than Grace Bay beach for its seclusion. It's not crowded & sometimes it seemed we were the only two there. The place is very very quiet. The gym is old with no AC but numerous fans which worked fine. God forbid you have the music loud while exercising, Amano (employee)will come & tell you to turn it down when your the only one in the little gym that no one hardly uses!! The disappointment was when we found 4 huge roaches in the kitchen on two nights of our stay, even with our cleaning & picking up after ourselves. The owners try to blame it on the property being in the Caribbean, but we have never encountered this where we have rented other villas. Out of our 10 day stay we only got housekeeping once! Not a thorough job either for $100 for 1 hour of cleaning. It shows the lack of cleaning there is between rental stays.!! I would suggest a thorough house cleaning especially in the kitchen inside the cabinets the barbeque grill & where the garbage is after each rental stay and at least twice for house cleaning during a renters stay no matter the length of stay when you have a kitchen. !!!!

I talked to Fatima extensively before travel date, and was disappointed with her lack of greeting (we had to tell her employee we wanted to see her a few days later) when we arrived and departure. I have not heard from her to ask if we had a nice stay & what needs improvement.

The road to the villa is bumpy as hell. This has nothing to do with the owners, but from another reviewer this has been going on for quite some time.

The most relaxing vacation we have ever taken!

  • 5 of 5

After searching for the perfect vacation spot for our first visit to Turks and Caicos, I stumbled upon Escencia Villa on Long Bay Beach. Ritama was very kind to accommodate us and our time availability.

We really appreciated the privacy of the gated villas and were immediately greeted upon our arrival by Bernard and Louise who were overseeing the property in Ritatma's absence. They were very welcoming and assured us that they were only a phone call away if we needed anything!

We loved the large Penthouse Suite with the wraparound porch overlooking the pool and ocean. The fresh fruit was a nice touch and much appreciated and we were pleased to find a full kitchen with everything we needed to prepare our own meals as well as a grill on our balcony and a dishwasher for cleanup:)

The Villa was clean and the bed and furniture (inside and out) was very comfortable.

We relaxed and enjoyed the pristine beach and the kite surfers that graced the waters. The beach went on for miles and other than the surfers and a group of horseback riders occasionally, we only saw a handful of people each day.

The water was only waist deep for as far as you could see and other than a conch shell here and there it was soft, beautiful sand.

Friendly island, with easy access to restaurants, grocery and excursions.

We have never gone back to the same vacation rental twice until now. We truly feel like we found the perfect Villa and we will be back for two weeks next year!
