The house is located in the village of Le Bar-sur-loup in the Alpes-Maritimes department, about 10 minutes east of Grasse, 25 minutes north of Cannes, and 40 minutes northwest of Nice. This maison de village is situated in a corner of the village square; parking is available right in front of the door. Bougainvilleas and charming hand-hewn doors adorn the homes in this village full of history dating from the 10th century. A small balcony off the living room overlooks the town and valley, and all of the windows overlook the beautiful valley of the famous Gorges du Loup. This is one of France’s most cherished areas!
The house is on two levels: both bedrooms are downstairs along with one bathroom; upstairs are the living/dining room, the kitchen, and the second bathroom. When you're not mesmerized by the glorious views of the Gorges du Loup, you can cook up a storm in the well-stocked kitchen or borrow one of the many books in our unusually rich library (including a set of the Great Books, in case you'd like to catch up on your Plato on a rainy day). You'll feel like a native in this very un-touristy village....no tour buses pulling up here with masses of people overriding the town. Three delightful restaurants and a couple of shops will ensure you have everything you need if you decide to hunker down and relax...and if you want to discover the surroundings, the choices are overwhelming! There's Nice...Cannes....Antibes....Monaco....St. Paul de Vence...Grasse...Gourdon...Find out why Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Fernand Leger, Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy and countless others migrated here and settled in these beautiful hills. It's the light, the color, the marvelous food, the magnificent landscape. Come see for yourself!
A devoted francophile, I fell in love with France and the French at the impressionable age of 14...and have never quite recovered. For forty years I've wandered around every corner of France, thrilling to each region as if it's a different country, loving the differences and regionalisms I come across. I want my guests to be happy in my home, and wish their experience to be joyful and relaxing. I've put as many creature comforts in there as I can imagine, and my guests have always been appreciative and delighted. You're here to enjoy yourself et vivre a la francaise! Let the party begin--que la fête commence!
Valerie Sutter purchased this townhome in 1975
This is a family home and we have enjoyed continuing the tradition of hosting families and friends here over the years.
The marvelous climate (cool breezes in the evenings, warm sunny dry days); the unspoiled views; the friendliness of the villagers. The house is comfortable, homey, relaxing. The view from all the windows is breathtaking.
We had an absolutely fabulous time in Bar. We loved the town, did lots of visits to Antibes and the beaches, and the hill towns, and even made it to the river twice. It was a highlight of our month in France. Your place was great and just what we needed.
Just returned from a fabulous week in Le-Bar-Sur-Loup! Your townhouse was perfect for the two of us and it is exactly as described on the website. The only surprise was how much lovelier it is in person! It was very comfortably furnished and although there were only two of us, it could have easily accommodated four people. The kitchen was well equipped, however, with so many great restaurant options, we didn't cook very often! And the view, wow! Le-Bar-Sur-Loup is the perfect location for exploring the many lovely villages in the the hills above Nice. We never drove much more than an hour to discover another gem in the area...Gourdon, Grasse, Valbonne, Biot, Tende, Saint Paul de Vence, Le Saut Du Loup, Villa & Garden Ephrussi de Rothchild. Your suggestions for places to visit were right on the mark. Great walks right out your front door too! And the church bells...so lovely to hear them every hour. We had such a magnificent week, it was hard to say goodbye!
Le Bar-sur-Loup was a tourist’s dream. It was a small village, perfectly located for innumerable day trips (to Tourettes-sur-Loup, to Nice, to Monaco, etc.) yet untouched by crowds. As we climbed the road at the end of each day, we felt like we were coming home. Chez Sutter was extremely comfortable and had everything we could have wanted. Most memorable was the view from the windows. We overlooked the Gorges du Loup and each hour of the day was a beautiful view. On a clear day we could see Gourdon, a perched village not far away. The apartment was convenient to a particularly excellent restaurant, Le Donjon, and across the street from the Tourist Office. The tourist office was very helpful in suggesting and planning trips. A small market was nearby as was a boulangerie. Every room in the house was complete and well-decorated. The kitchen, although we primarily ate out, had everything a gourmet cook would need. Our memories of Bar will last for a very long time.
