|Minimum Stay||1 - 5 nights|
Beachhouse Walrus is an unique styled house, Mediterranean detached and colorful in a 3300 m2 garden, and part of a compound.
Imagine waking up, asking the help to prepare your breakfast while you swim or walk along the beach. You return for breakfast and continue your day, going out on excursions, horse back riding, renting a boat, a trip in organized groups (mountain bike, four-wheel, hiking) or just stay home and read/paint/draw/make jigsaws, play tennis, practice golf swings etc. The Walrus has its WI-FI. The tennis court is for your use only, as are the sand bunkers to practice some golf.
For beach life you can stay in our bay Playa Bonita, or go to next bays like Portillo or Coson to vary a bit.
The nearby town Las Terrenas is developing rapidly, but since long it has had good supermarkets. The town has a French/Italian/Dominican population so purchasing delicatesses is never a problem. The maid will help you to purchase fresh fish from fishermen at Walrus if you would like.
In town are activities as Spanish classes, dance classes and of course the normal bars/restaurants and dancing. You can order food from the surrounding restaurants as well. We think your vacation will be focused on the easy life. Enjoy!!

At Beachhouse Walrus you experience the perfect combinations and transitions of nature. Since the house is beach front, you are constantly in contact with the sea with its sandy entrance. The garden provides a nice connection and alternative from the beach. The house has a big covered terrace where you will be most of your time since it has a large sitting area, big dining table, open bar to the kitchen. The living has a TV, DVD, music equipment, library, and board games/puzzles, WI-FI and telephone. The tennis court is a private court, only for those staying at Beachhouse Walrus. The 3 king-size bedrooms with their own bathrooms, in the same Mediterrean style as the house. Colorful and with lovely details. One bedroom is equipped with 4 bunkstyle beds (2m x 1 m) each, and has its bedroom. Each room has a safety box. The king-size bedrooms have private terraces and entrances. The hotel next door allows Beachhouse Walrus'guests access to their restaurant/bar and pool area. In the same bay are more restaurants to visit, but most of the time you will enjoy your meal at your terrace. A live in maid will assist you in preparing meals. As will the live in gardener help you with outside choirs. At night a watchman will survey the compound and the house. Fishermen will come by to offer you the catch of the day. In town (las Terrenas) 10 min. drive, you can find all the shopping needed, and there are lovely restaurants as well. You can make long walks along the beach, hire a four-wheel individually or join a group who makes excursions. Rent a boat to go to other beaches or fishing. Scuba dive- or snorkel equipment you can book next door. Kite surfing in las Terrenas (15 min. drive). Santo Domingo the Capital is 2,5 hour drive thanks to a new beautiful scenery high way since 2007. To put this story short, in Beachhouse Walrus you will detach from city life, enjoy nature, relax and enjoy life itself. We like you to have a wonderful inspirational vacation!!
We found what we longed for, a stay at a blue bay in a beachhouse, just a few steps away from the sea. The beachhouse Walrus is build in a traditional and colorful style: roof of palm leafs, tastefully painted, spacious and open designed, a huge covered terrace and several small other ones. From the house is an open view of the always changing surface of the bay, and one hears and sees the rustling waves. The surrounding tropical yard has a lawn with palmtrees, large plants and aromatic flowers. The house is comfortably furnished and invites to relax to recover and get inspired. We didn't want to cook, to clean or do errands. It all was possible thanks to the live in help. But we did want to play was: tennis, swim, read, practice our chipping, bunkershots, and so we did all in the Walrus' garden. Next time we will come here we'll take our children/grandchildren along. We will show them how it is to live for a while in paradise.
The positives are: Spectacular beach. Water is warm for swimming and the waves are big enough for surfing. The house has a surfboard for use. Backyard directly on beach. House is beautifully decorated with plenty of room. Each bedroom has its own complete bathroom with shower. Housekeeper is excellent cook for breakfast and dinner, and keeps house very clean. Groundskeeper keeps grounds up meticulously. Try to brush up on your Spanish, as neither speaks English or French. Sand tennis court is excellent and racquets are fine. The wifi works well. Restaurants along the beach have good food. The town of Las Terranas has interesting shops, a modern supermarket for food, and a hard to find place to buy fresh fish and shrimp on the beach (75 meters directly east of the cemetary in the center of town). Buy the fresh oysters from guy riding his bicycle on the beach, very good. The roads to get from either Santo Domingo (2 hours) or Punta Cana (3 1/2 hours) are very good and scenic.
The negatives are: Around dusk, the sandflies ('no see'ums) brutally bite exposed legs and feet. We learned after the first night to wear long pants and socks. The mosquitoes come out at dusk and night, another reason to cover up. The common areas are open air, which is nice, but open to mosquitoes. The bedroom windows have screens and air conditioning, so we learned quickly to keep the bedroom doors closed at all times to keep mosquitoes out. It is advertised that occupants of Walrus House have access to the pool at the resort next door. This is true, but at a $10 charge per person per day. This charge is applied toward food and drinks at the resort each day. So if you use the pool, plan on having lunch or dinner there. The restaurant at the resort is decent, but you won't eat there daily. The master bedroom shower had such poor water pressure that it was mostly unusable, but the other bathrooms were adequate. Walrus House was difficult to find even with Google maps, so better directions would be nice.
Overall we enjoyed our stay. The great beach with warm ocean water outweighed the negatives and having the housekeeper/cook made meals easy once we did our shopping at the market and on the beach. I would recommend Walrus House for beach lovers.
The house has a beautiful property, is privately located with great access to the beach. Ingrid the housekeeper keeps the place immaculate and is a great asset in the kitchen. We were there with four younger kids and they had a ball playing in the hammock and swimming in the ocean.
We had an amazing stay at Beach House Walrus! From the moment we arrived, our family was made to feel welcome by Ingrid and Ernesto. The view of the ocean is spectacular and the house was beautifully decorated for the holidays. We enjoyed the dining "al fresco". Ingrid made delicious Dominican breakfast and dinners almost daily and she even prepared a special Christmas Eve Dinner for us, including our extended family who live nearby and came over for the festivities.
Before we arrived, I contacted Jorien and set up private taxi transfers with her trusted driver Tony. He was available to us the entire trip for runs into town and excursions. He is very pleasant.
We had 8 adults and 2 toddlers staying in the house and there was plenty of space. We had other guests staying at nearby hotels that joined us during the day. Christmas Eve we had dinner at the house with 10 extra guests and there was space for everyone!
Ingrid's hospitality goes above and beyond. She is sweet, caring and her cooking is divine. I can still taste all the special dishes she made for us!
Ernesto kept the grounds beautifully and even set up a portable pool for my children (ages 2 and 3). There is a pool available for use right next door. For families with small children, this is the ideal set up because we didn't have to worry about the kids getting in the pool without us knowing.
The beach is very pretty and this house is truly a beachfront property! You can enjoy a view of the ocean while dining and you can hear the waves crashing at night. We had a few showers during our stay. When it rained during the day, it always ended with a rainbow. Paradise!
We drove into town a few times to eat and shop. A group went to Salto Limon and had a great time. I mainly stayed on the beach with the kids and relaxed! There is something for everyone to do! We ate at Atlantis twice (delicious) and at Casa Grande (pretty good). There are a few places you can walk to and grab a drink in the evenings.
I don't have anything negative to say except for the mosquitoes at night so take lots of bug spray and wear long sleeves and long pants to bed.
It was an amazing vacation! Thank you Jorien for sharing this special place!
This is our third visit to Beach House Walrus and the first time with our son of 1.5 years old.
It was again the perfect and most relaxing holiday you can imagine. And our son loved it too.
There is no such place as the Walrus. The house is romantic, luxurious, clean and has a beautiful harmony with the ocean and its tropical surroundings.
You can see that the owners thought about the smallest details in the architecture of the house and its decoration. The garden is perfectly maintained has beautiful flowers, palm trees and its size and its natural fencing gives you privacy. You can practice your golf swing in the bunkers, play tennis on your private tennis court or just enjoy the sun or shades under the palm trees.
We love to swim in the ocean but sometimes the waves were a bit too rough for our toddler. These days we went to the large, well maintained, pool of the next door very small hotel, only 20 steps away from the Walrus garden. This hotel is very quiet, so we had the pool for ourselves every day.
Our son loved to play with all the toys and books that are available in the Walrus.
We bought the ingredients of the meals (after consulting Ingid) and Ingrid cooked the most delicious meals. Although Las terrenas has some nice beach restaurants we preferred to stay at the Walrus for diner since no restaurant could beat Ingrids’ cooking.
For us it was the perfect family holiday and we can’t wait to come back.
"Another day in paradise" is a quote from one of our sons during our week-long visit to Beach Villa Walrus.
Our family of 10: 2 grandparents, 2 sons and their wives and 4 grandchildren (ages 1 - 6) enjoyed every minute of our 1-week stay at Beach Villa Walrus. The 1st sight on walking in from the parking area to and through the house and beyond is breathtaking. And it only gets better. The feeling is beautiful and yet warm - very special and at the same time, most welcoming. All of our adult family members have high-pressured commitments in their work-a-day lives and all could relax deeply at Walrus, a triumph right there, and we had fun too. Because we were so happy at the Villa, we only left the property to explore by foot and to shop for food. Next time we will because everyone we've talked to and everything we've read says there are many exciting opportunities to check out.
I can't say enough about how appreciative we are for host Jorien and for both the domestic manager Ingrid and the groundskeeper Celestiano. Jorien is totally professional, quick to respond and answer questions; she goes above and beyond that too - accommodates individual preferences and needs, and sincerely seems to care about your having a wonderful time in every way possible. Ingrid is a special person and an unbelievable cook - a real treat for our family; good food and flexible for everyone, all ages. We also admired our gardener Celestiano and the services he provided, including maintaining the clay tennis court well.
We will be coming back. Beach Villa Walrus has become a regular destination for our family.
For one of the most relaxing and tranquil settings, I'd choose the Walrus over and over again in a heartbeat. The Walrus accommodated eight people from two families with ease, and the surrounding restaurants offered a nice variety. In addition, Ingrid and Neto were there to help with any needs, including any meals. The beach is great for relaxing and swimming, and surfboards are available for rent next door. Can't wait to return!
