Formia is located in the south of Lazio on the beautiful Gulf of Gaeta. The gulf is surrounded by the gigantic mountain range of the Aurunci mountains which rise to a height of up to 1500m and their foothills extend to the coast. Consequently, the coastline is very dramatic: you find long sandy beaches, small bays and cliffs. The climate in this area is Mediterranean and very mild throughout the year (average temperature in the winter months: 14.6 degrees). Olive trees, lemon and orange trees, figs and palm trees belong to the typical vegetation.
Very famous are the olives from Gaeta that are grown here in the area.
Formia is also the economic center of the gulf. The central Via Vitruvio and shopping centers invites you for a stroll.
Here you will find medieval towns with small alleys, staircases and old churches, small mountain villages and remains from Roman and pre-Roman times - including the Villa Mamurra in Formia and the remains of the Roman city of Minturnae with the amphitheater in Minturno.
Even nature and hiking enthusiasts are not left out.. There are two nature reserves nearby: the Aurunci mountains (excellent hiking trails) and the Riviera di Ulisse nature reserve, where culture meets nature.
Enjoy the Mediterranean flair with a walk on the fish market, a good ice cream or a romantic dinner in one of the typical restaurants.
Formia is also an excellent starting point for day trips to Rome, Naples, Pompei, Caserta, the islands, the mountains, archaeological excavations, monasteries and spas.
