Brian J. Steffan, I am a full-time resident of Lost River, WV after living for 30 years in Northern Virginia. I own a permanent placement employment agency in Arlington, VA., Steffan & Co. Inc. I own the adjoining property to this cottage, but it cannot be seen by the cottage or the cottage by my property.
Brian J. Steffan purchased this cabin in 2006
I chose this location because it is the adjoining property to my existing weekend home, but cannot be seen. I built it as a guest cottage for the main property. Also because the people are so nice and friendly and they all love to be here and cherish it like a jewel.

I just wanted to thank you for the rental of your property. We had the whole area to ourselves and the weather was great. No problems with anything in the house. It was great to get away from it all. We hiked and visited the highest point in WV, visited Green Bank, and did Shenandoah National Park. Walked a lot of the roads since no one was around. We meant to visit the barn at the bottom of the hill (we heard it was new), but didn't get the chance to buy fresh eggs and meat. The restaurant down the street was fabulous. Hamburger night we left there with less than a $15.00 bill! No problem with the BMW Z4 on the roads. LOTS of deer everywhere (deer hunting must be great in that area). No bears...we did see two in the Shenandoah National Park. We will be back next year
Loved staying here! Cottage was cozy, clean, well appointed, and stocked with essential comforts like nice towels, a great coffee selection, and even a bottle of wine. Highly recommend!
Every time we found ourselves thinking "oh, I wonder if the kitchen has..." or "I hope we can find...", we'd open a drawer or a cabinet and voila! Such a charming house, beautifully and thoughtfully furnished. It was easy to relax and enjoy ourselves, just re-connecting and enjoying the natural beauty around us. The General Store was perfect for lunch and browsing; the nearby towns of Mathias and Wardensville had tons of fun shops with local designs and artisans. Definitely coming again.
This is very clean, well-maintained, secure, private, and charming location. Lots of extra touches by the owners make this rental an extra value. It offers easy access to all other points of interest in the Lost River area, but it's well off the main traffic route so you have a feeling of being alone together in the woods. The cleared yard affords amazing views of the night sky from the deck or fire pit. The owners were very communicative beforehand and made themselves available for questions or concerns throughout the visit. Fortunately, we had no concerns whatsoever -- everything was perfect!
This place is ideal for relaxing in and around Lost River. The charming photos and glowing reviews tell you everything you need to know about the cottage. Brian made arriving a breeze and was a very welcoming host. Everyone we met during our stay was incredibly friendly -- this is one place where it's easy to feel right at home as soon as you arrive!
We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the mountains. The cottage was clean, cozy and inviting. We went to the state park to hike and swim and toured the Seneca cavern. We would have been content to just relax at the cottage. it is decorated very nicely.
This cottage is perfect for any couple looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of real life.
My boyfriend and I came here the day after Thanksgiving to just get away. We turned off our cell phones (there wasn't much reception anyways!) didn't watch any live TV (only movies, which plenty were provided) and really took some time to enjoy the quiet. The place is in great shape and honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better time.
The owner was extremely detailed in helping find the place and gave great advice for places to eat and things to see nearby.
We are hoping to make a return trip very soon!
