About Donald Pitts

My late wife, Jerrolyn, designed and developed this magical property over the last 37 years. With a degree in architecture from Harvard, she always designed award winning homes and offices.

I came to California on vacation from my law practice ten years ago and met Jerrolyn. The rest is history. As an artist, sculptor, construction & finish carpenter - to name a few of my areas of interest - I joined Jerrolyn in the development and design of Casa Portofino. I look forward to sharing our creation with you.

Donald Pitts purchased this cottage in 1974

Why Donald Pitts chose Topanga

Casa Portofino is perfectly situated on the seaward side of the Santa Monica Mountain Range and surrounded by the Topanga State Park which is filled with many miles of hiking and biking trails. The environment is remote, think Big Bear, but the property is located only 20 minutes from Malibu, Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley and only 10 minutes from the Pacific ocean. I can think of no place I would rather be.

What makes this cottage unique

A timeless place to seek refuge from the world.

Tucked away gem with a great pool

  • 5 of 5

What a unique property! Topanga Canyon is tucked up above greater LA. It took us 55 minutes to get to Universal Studios, but only 25 minutes to get to the Santa Monica Pier. The house is small but the loft bedroom is roomy, the outside deck is peaceful and the pool/hot tub area is amazing. The kitchen is small and not updated, but met our needs for making breakfast and snacks. The owner is super friendly and helpful.

My husband and our 2 teen kids loved staying in this unique place with the fantastic pool. I hope we can return.

Enchanting! A magical sanctuary to unwind and rejuvenate the spirit

  • 5 of 5

Highly recommended. Secluded, quiet area yet close to the ocean, San Fernando Valley, and all that LA has to offer. Donald and company are all A+++ hosts and took very good care of us. An enchanting experience like no other!

An aging property in a great location

  • 2 of 5

Topanga is a great location for a lot of activities. The property is a couple of minutes from Topanga State Park and a lot of wonderful hiking trails - you won't believe you are still in LA County. It is a 7-8 minute drive to the beach but to get to the nicer beaches in Malibu it is another 20 minutes or so north from there or more depending on which beach you wish to access. Topanga is close to the 101 which is good access into LA, Anaheim, Buena Park, Disney, Ventura, etc - so if you have a couple of those activities on your mind but don't want to stay there - this property is a good choice. We took advantage of a near by stable and took an hour long horseback trail ride. Our 6 year old daughter loved it and the views were wonderful.

The owner is very nice and met us on the property and showed us the home at the start of our stay.

The property itself has aged A LOT since the pictures were taken. The pool is well cared for and clean (unheated in April) but the lounge chairs are falling apart and need to be replaced. If lounging on the chairs in the sun is something you are looking forward to, you might want a towel to lay on - so bring your own, because not too many are provided. The hot tub was broken down when we were there and we were told we would receive a partial refund on the stay - that never materialized.

The house itself is also in need of a top to bottom refresh. A lot of the wooden floor boards are rotting and tiles in the bathroom are stained. The faucet handles are worn and stripped which means they only shut off under intense pressure and are impossible to attenuate properly in the shower from hot to warm for a comfortable shower. Bed linens were adequate but towels provided were quite old, frayed, and not all that clean feeling.

A washer and dryer is only available in the owner's property - but he does literally have 20 dogs which for us made it not even worth asking to come over to utilize. This did shift our vacation such that we used the beach less often since we didn't have access to a washer.

This was our 3rd spring break trip to the Santa Monica Mountains in 4 years. I wouldn't seek out this property again but Topanga is a worthy place to stay!

Great place to relax and get away

  • 5 of 5

Great place to relax and get away. The location of the property makes it so it stays cool even during the middle of the summer, with ocean breezes coming in throughout the day.

Terrific Place in one of the best locations in LA

  • 5 of 5

My kids love the water. Let's start there. This place has one of the nicest private pools at any place we have ever stayed. It is beautifully landscaped, inviting and well appointed. The hot tub is great too. We stayed at the larger guest house (at Don's suggestion) which has the best access to the pool. His suggestion was most welcome. We ended up planning our days around when the pool deck would be sunniest as it was early in the season.

Moving on from the pool, the house itself was comfortable and had everything we needed, Decor I would describe as funky, quirky and provided interesting topics of conversation for the kids. Giraffe's are part of the theme you will be waiting to discover on your own. The kitchen was small but well equipped for cooking and dining in, which we did most of the time for dinner and breakfast. We made ample use of the gas grill by the pool.

The master bedroom was large and comfortable, right off the kitchen. Living areas included a separate dining area and very comfortable living room with TV/DVD/VCR available (and used with Don's patient instructions). Downstairs the in-suite laundry was a great perk. The second bedroom where the kids (8 and 10) stayed was a nice cozy room with garden access. The bed was a pullout which was fine for the kids, but sharing the house if it was two couple, it might not be as suitable.

As for the owners, Don and Jerri, they could not have been nicer. They were themselves a true "California experience". They like to chat and are very proud to share their home with you. They live in the main house on the property. And there could not be a more perfect marriage of residence and personality. Felt a bit like a Ray Chandler novel in a very good way.

An example of Don's thoughtfulness happened before we even arrived. He knew we were arriving late after a flight from the east. He also knew that things up the canyon close quite early. Putting two and two together he asked if we would like him to have a pizza delivered and ready for dinner when we got there. He did and it was exactly what we needed. Of course there was wine too, because they welcome all guests with a bottle - Don will ask preferences (white, red, sparking) before you get there.

All told, staying with Don and Jerri is a great experience close to the heart of LA but nothing like staying in LA. I would love to stay again with the kids as they love LA and this was a perfect base.
