Turtle Hut I at Punalu'U Black Sand Beach! More FIVE STAR Ratings!!

Bedrooms 1
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Condo, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Now you've found your perfect vacation spot... 'Hale Honu' or 'Turtle Hut,' aptly named for the endangered hawksbill turtles nestling along our black sand beach, offers a tranquil haven to human travelers, too! Perched on a bluff with Mauna Loa Volcano as its background and the soft blue waters of the Pacific as its foreground, Sea Mountain welcomes visitors seeking 'Old Hawaii' at its best.

Just browse through our former Guest Reviews Tab and you'll see we have earned more than triple the number of FIVE STAR ratings than any other listing in our resort, or our district! There are many reasons why:

The Turtle Huts have everything you're looking for in your 'dream' Hawaiian vacation: outstanding LOCATION, fantastic AMENITIES and surprising affordability for a top-rated resort in paradise! Recent resort upgrades include high speed internet and wi-Fi, premium and unlimited on-demand TV programming and local and long distance telephone.

Serene...peaceful...secluded...oasis...historic...natural.... are apt descriptors for this magnificent region. The Turtle Hut's location in the more secluded and peaceful section of the resort is an added asset, and its VIEW of the OCEAN is what brings our guests back, year after year. We are thrilled to have earned more than triple the number of FIVE STAR ratings from our guests than any other property in our resort, and we work hard to achieve that record.

We are ideally located between Kailua-Kona and Hilo, making day trips to either side of the island's attractions easy! We're also only a short half hour drive to Volcanoes National Park and its awesome eruption shows, Turtle Hut overlooks the magnificent Pacific Ocean AND the 18th Green and Fairway of Sea Mountain's Par 72 Golf Course. Can you believe 18 holes of golf with your cart for only $25.00?! with plenty of whale-watching possibilities thrown in for free! A 30 minute drive and a short hike takes you to Papakolea, our incredible GREEN Sands Beach, or tour nearby Kula Kai Caverns in Ocean View, South Point, Wood Valley? Hike the ancient Ala Kahakai Trail fronting our resort and beyond to discover petroglyphys and heiaus dating back to pre-contact times...The possibilities nearby are endless.

Bask in our glorious tradewinds-cooled sunshine or under our spectacular star-filled night sky! Our beach has been consistently rated among the most exotic, natural beaches in the world by beach afficianados, so the unit is equipped with great beach chairs and mats, umbrella, and basic snorkel sets.

Thoughtfully furnished and equipped with a selection of books and music to enjoy from the lounges on your lanai! and, of course, a blender awaits your mai tai or cocktail of choice.

Nearby villages of Volcano, Pahala, Na'alehu and Ocean View offer 'local style' culture as well as conveniences such as grocery stores, gas stations, banks, restaurants, hair salons, nail and facial aestheticians, massage therapists, and on Wed. and Saturdays, wonderful Farmers Markets with amazing arrays of fresh veggies, fruits, local Ka'u coffees and treasures from local artists and craftspeople. When in doubt where to eat?, just browse through the local restaurants list you'll find in the condo! for up to 21 great choices nearby, rated by travellers like you, and filled with helpful information.

Perhaps most importantly, when you rent from us, you are renting from TRUE, local owners, NOT from a property management business or out-of-state owners with little knowledge of the area or concern about your experience! Our guests receive concierge-style service from us, including recommendations on restaurants, activities and little-known 'not-to-miss!' places. You'll never receive this level of aloha from out-of-state owners or rental businesses!

Need additional room for family members joining you? Look up 'Turtle Hut II'now available for booking. Same great resort and amenities, offering additional space. Look up listing #251908!

About Barbara Rushton

I believe that my move to Hawaii in 1997 is a perfect example of why the Big Island is referred to as the 'Healing Island'. Sure, I had fallen in love with Hawaii ever since my first vacation here in the '80s, but I was far from financially ready to make the move until pow! my life blew up one insane day, and the decision to move was made for me! And so it was, within 22 days, I resigned from my position as a police administrator, divorced, and hopped a plane bound for Kailua-Kona, Hawaii with my 80 year old mother. Why Hawaii? It was the only place on earth where I had always felt completely happy and healthy and where I knew I would be safe to begin a new life.

It is often said that the Mana, or 'Spirit', of this island calls out to those whose hearts need to heal. I know now that it was not a coincidence that I was called here or that I found an old coffee plantation house for sale, next to the most famous 'place of refuge' on the island, Puuhonua O Honaunau.

With pennies down, we bought it and learned how to grow and roast coffee! and hung macadamia nuts to dry in our old panty hose! Eventually, we sold that wonderful place for such a profit that you may now guess the rest of this story: yes! that first humble blessing, our place of refuge, sold for an amount large enough to provide not only for our next home, but also for the purchase of this beautiful condo at Punalu'u! And now I am blessed to offer a haven and oasis to travellers and visitors from all over the world, whether weary from life and needing to heal, as I was; or those coming to explore and enjoy the wonders of Hawaii! I still pinch myself often, to be sure this is all real!

Barbara Rushton purchased this condo in 2003

Why Barbara Rushton chose Ka'u District

I first saw Colony One at Sea Mountain way back in the '80s when we stopped at the Black Sand Beach on a tour bus, and I vowed then that I would find a way to stay there on my very next trip to the islands. Sea Mountain is unique, not only to the Big Isle, but truly is not to be found anywhere else in the entire island chain! Not a ticky-tacky high rise, this small complex sits on a bluff like a quaint Polynesian Village might have, with the calm, turquoise Pacific Ocean at its foreground and the dark green forestland of Mauna Loa Volcano as its background. I can't imagine a more perfect location for a vacation, as we're located half-way between the 'big' towns of Kona and Hilo, and only a 30 minute drive to the Volcanoes National Park. There's plenty to do without ever leaving the resort, as well! With our own magnificent black sand beach, Sea Mountain Golf Course, a beautiful fresh water pool and a volcano-style spa, tennis courts, tropical gardens and manicured lawns to enjoy, I jumped at the first possible chance to purchase one that I could afford, in 2003. I've had nothing but positive experiences managing the rentals myself, and I've met people from all over the world! I've made enough $$ in the last couple of years to offer free stays to returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan, and have a few more scheduled this year. Life just doesn't get any better than this! Please come and find out for yourself!

What makes this condo unique

The perfect day for me while staying at the Turtle Hut myself always begins with watching the SUN-RISE out of the ocean with a freshly brewed cup of local coffee, right on my lanai! Remember, we're located on the windward coast, so its the sunrise that lights up the sky with every glorious color you can imagine, and I promise you'll re-define 'pink' and 'orange' and 'red' and try to find new ways to define those desciptors. I always have great company on the lanai, as our neighborhood cardinals and finch families will be waiting for me --sometimes chirping their impatience from atop the chairs! -- calling for their pieces of fruit and nuts! We've given them all names, down to the smallest male yellow finch with a broken left foot, who we call - you guessed it: 'Lefty'. When I'm lucky enough to have finished most of a papaya from the garden here, I usually take off for a good, long walk. There are endless walking or hiking choices here, depending on your conditioning, time and interests. One of my guests called me one day so thrilled that he had found waterfalls! on his hike during a heavy rain!

The perfect day's end always is spent here in our magnificent volcano-style spa. It's huge! and the perfect place to un-wind from a long day while gazing at unbelievably clear night skies. One night, I counted seven falling stars!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Turtle Hut lives up to every great review and more! We thoroughly enjoyed the quiet and natural beauty in which we have slept so delightfully for five nights. This paradise is so different from the concrete jungle where we currently reside.

What a fabulous time my husband and I had on our Hawaiian vacation and a large part of that is due to our outstanding accommodations. Turtle Hut I was the perfect place for us. Barb does such an excellent job with amenities and decorations: everything from the beautiful, soft, coordinating towels to the chilled glasses in the freezer, Barb, you thought of everything! I, personally, loved the European style walk-in shower!! The views of the ocean and the golf course (which had very few golfers on it, which was nice for us) were beautiful. I even saw a whale from our lanai one day!! Such a nice short walk to the Black Sand Beach!! Barb even texted us one day to remind us of the farmer's market in Naalehu.....what a nice personal touch : ) Turtle Hut 1 was such a nice "home base" for us as we ventured off to the different parts of the island each day. I will most certainly tell people about this gem of a place! Thank you again, Barb, we will hopefully be back!!

Finding your review, so beautifully worded with so many lovely compliments, MORE than makes up for all the hard work our team does to prepare and present a welcoming place for our guests! Beautiful spot. Turtles and volcanoes right there.

  • 5 of 5

Great spot. Right between both main cities. The volcanoe national park is a great drive. After along day out it was great to relaxin the spa and pool. The bed was one of the comfiest I've had. Highlight was the drive given by the Locals to Green Sand beach. $15 well spent. So much fun just getting there and then the hour spent there. Amazing.

Owner's Response: Aloha again, dearly Tracey, and Mahalos galore for taking the time to write such a glowing review of your stay! I'm so glad you took David Kuahiwinui's personal guided tour to Papakolea, our GREEN sands beach; I honestly think that magical spot should be listed as the 8th Womder of the World, don't you? Please come back again for a much longer stay, so you can take in more of our nearby magnificent wonders: Kula Kai Caverns in Ocean View, Wood Valley's Shangri-La environment, and several natural hot springs for bathing and snorkeling throughout Puna, just to name a few! Malama pono, pumehana, and a hui Hou, Roughly translated, that's "Take good care of yourself, friend,, until we meet again!" Always with aloha, Barb

We were so happy when we arrived at Turtle Hut 1 to walk in and feel at home, the views were stunning, the condo was very clean and very well stocked which was a blessing. It's a great community. We loved going to the black sand beach which is within walking distance and especially ally seeing the sea turtles hint...go early in the morning around 5:30/6:00 when the sun is coming up it's beautiful and there was always turtles there and maybe 2 other people. I highly recommend this place, plus it was in between the green sand beach another must do and the volcano national park.

Wonderful little condo.

  • 4 of 5

The Turtle Hut I was in a lovely area, within easy walking distance of Punalu'u beach and easy driving distance of the green sand beach, South Point and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hilo was a relatively easy drive as well. The drive to Kona-Kailua is much slower. We found it very relaxing and a great place to base our stay on the big island, as we were not looking for a big resort experience.

If you are looking for a great local beach, sea turtles, volcanoes, inexpensive golf, home cooked meals or small local diners and minimal crowds, this is a great place for you.

Expectations are important however, so realize that if you want a resort, luau, zipline, 4 star formal dining....look elsewhere. My other caution is that, although it is very nice and well kept, the Turtle Hut I is truly a studio apartment. I was the only man there with my wife, my daughter and my step-daughter. I spent a lot of time on the lanai looking at the birds, geckos, mongooses and beautiful ocean/golf course view while my teenage girls changed in the living room. Probably better for a couple alone or a family with one or two pre-teen children than 4 adults.

Wow! What a wonderful experience we had at this cozy condo! My husband and I are retired educators from Oregon and we have visited the Big Island three times. This part of the island was so peaceful and natural without the chaos and crowds of the more touristy areas. We stayed here for three weeks in February/March. We loved it and will return soon. Being so close to the golf course was a mixed blessing for us since my husband (the golfer) had just had shoulder surgery and could not play golf. Next time we will be able to play golf and it will be even more wonderful. We loved the little geckos on the lanai. The wind and the sun and the sound of the waves were magical. The large sea turtles on the black sand beach were amazing. I have never slept so well in my entire life. The bed is so comfortable and the kitchen is so well supplied. My husband loves to cook and had great fun cooking with local vegies from the farmers' markets. We highly recommend this condo to anyone who wants to experience the magic of Hawaii. It was so great to have fresh flowers when we arrived. Thank you for being such good hostesses and thank you for sharing your beautiful condo with people like us. We really enjoyed our time there. It exceeded our expectations and the photos online were very accurate. Aloha and Mahalo.

Owner's Response: Aloha again, Bob and Kathy, I am so very grateful and humbled by your lovely comments! I hope you'll forgive my very tardy response, due to a terrible relapse of the flu & followed by a series of house guests! Every day during your stay, I thought of Bob.....watching the golfers on the 18th green and fairway from the lanai....and being so frustrated at not being able to join in this year! Being a shoulder surgery survivor myself this year, I totally empathized and appreciated his great, positive attitude throughout your stay! Here's to your return, soon! With Bob 100% recovered and tearing up those links; with you, too, or at least driving a mean cart? and serving some refreshing drinks along the way! The ocean and volcano views alone are worth the cart rental, ten times over! Always with aloha, Barb

The turtle hut location reminded me of going to thr cottage in ontario. The unit was clean and cozy and very peacefull. As with a cottage you must bring your own food supplies but all the other essentails are provided. We especially liked not hsving to listen to the sound of air conditioning units and rather enjoyed the sounds of the birds and waves. The only recommendation i can make would be to have another set of bbqs closer to the end units on either side of the property if possible. Some nights it was really busy at the bbqs at dinner time . Property was kept up with regular maintance by the crew. Good job done by the whole condo staff.

Was clean and cozy and

Owner's Response: Aloha again, Corey, and Mahalos for taking the time to write such a wonderful and thoughtful review! I agree completely with your suggestion to add a couple of BBQs to our end of the resort! Until very recently, we were allowed to have small hibachis outside our condos, and guests loved that convenience! I do stock a George Foreman grill for inside grilling, but that's not really the same, is it? Perhaps I should look for an electric grill for the lanai until such time the Board might approve additional full size BBQs? Again, I appreciate your thoughtful comments, and hope you'll consider returning again, soon! Always with aloha, Barb
