Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Wallingford - The Old Stables

2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 4

The property is located in one of the Chiltern Hills most beautiful valleys in a quiet rural setting. Originally built as a wing to spectacular 18th Century barns, the stables have been converted to a very high standard, retaining many of the original features. Well equipped, the property provides comfort & convenience whilst enjoying privacy in its own walled courtyard with vines and colourful plants. The setting is rural and peaceful with our ducks and chickens wandering freely.

The area is a walker’s paradise with the famous Ridgeway nearby for the serious or several delightful walks on the doorstep for the more casual. Also popular with cyclists.

Excellent base for touring the ancient Thames-side towns of Henley, Wallingford, Dorchester & Abingdon all within a few miles. Oxford (c12 miles), Windsor (c24 miles), London (c45 miles), Stratford Upon Avon (c48 miles), Cotswolds (c25miles). Close to rail links to London & West country, 10 miles from M4 & M40, Heathrow 28 miles. Horse riding, golf, boat hire available locally.

If you are a fan of the TV series Midsomer Murders, check out the filming locations on www.midsomermurders.org, to see the many pretty villages that are local to the cottage!

The property is strictly non smoking.

Best Value In Its Category

  • 5 of 5

As veterans of many holiday cottage stays in the Berkshire/Oxfordshire region, we found The Old Stables to be outstanding value for money. We used the cottage as a base to spend time with our Reading-based family and our two grandsons stayed with us for most of our tenancy. Jenny and Robert have created a beautiful garden setting with a lawn big enough for us to erect a badminton net and an adjacent field has space for kicking balls around.

The resident geese and chickens were very entertaining and Jenny kindly gave us freshly laid eggs, a real treat!

The nicely furnished cottage is very comfortable with all conveniences and is very well presented. Its location offers many walks with plenty of opportunity to observe farm animals and equipment plus abundant bird life.

Ipsden village has a shop/post office, but the owner was unwell during our stay and the stock was limited. The nearest supermarket is in the village of Woodcote about 15 minutes away by car. It is a very pleasant walk up to the excellent King William 1V pub which has a lovely view over the Chilterns. St Mary's Church is usually open, dates from the 12th century and is well worth visiting. It has an unusual double bell turret, a beautiful organ and other interesting features.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Old Stables and hope to return.

Exactly as described.

  • 5 of 5

The converted stables are spacious for a family of 4 and very comfortable. Every need has been catered for such as ample parking, dishwasher, washing machine and fully equipped kitchen. The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful, offering us some de-icer one morning when our car was frosty. A big thank you for all the extras, we particularly enjoyed the logs in the log burning stove (already burning on our arrival) as well as the fresh flowers on the table, the milk in the fridge and addition of a little Christmas tree in the lounge! The location is convenient for access to Henley, which was our main focus. Since we were familiar with the area, we did not take advantage of the huge selection of maps/walking routes and tourist attractions that had been put together for our use. We highly recommend this cottage and would stay again if we were coming back to this area. Thank you!

A beautiful cottage in an idyllic setting.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous week in rural South Oxfordshire. The converted barn was quirky and unique, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. It was clean and well maintained, very well equipped and in a beautiful, peaceful location. The owners were very friendly and helpful, and we were lucky enough to enjoy some unseasonably warm weather for the time of year, which allowed us to explore the local area. The property is right on the Chiltern Cycleway, and close enough to easily visit the city of Oxford and Henley on Thames. There are National Trust properties nearby (Grey's Court, Nuffield Place etc), and we also visited Legoland (Windsor) and the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre (Great Missenden), as well as the fabulous Pitt Rivers and Natural History Museums in Oxford (using the Park and Ride services). All in all a fantastic stay in a superb location, with lots to do and see (including wonderful wildlife - red kites galore, a barn owl and the fabulous array of ducks, geese and chickens at Well Place Barn itself). We would highly recommend and definitely visit again.
