My sister and I grew up in New York City, but we always wanted to have a place where we could escape and just be in nature. We both fell in love with Columbia County. Before either of us got married or had kids we bought our house in Austerlitz together.
Deirdre Fishel purchased this house in 1995
We love Columbia County because each area is more beautiful than the next. There are farms, mountains, woods. It's less than three hours from New York City and Boston, but it's quiet and laid back. It's totally not touristy but we're only 15 minutes from the Berkshires so we have all the culture and great restaurants we could want. Living in Brooklyn we wanted a location that felt really rural so we searched till we found a house on an unbuiltup dirt road, set back, so that we could have total privacy.
We loved the house as soon as we saw it because of the open living space with its cathedral ceiling and wood stove, plus the beautiful 16 acres the house sits on. Our dream was to build a pond which we did in 1997. 12 years later the 1/2 acre swimming pond with over an acre of cleared land around it, about 1/8 mile from the house, is spectacular. We sometimes can't believe it's ours. It's an amazing, magical space with frogs and dragon flies where our kids have learned to swim. Three years ago, we realized the house just wasn't big enough for our two families so we added a large extension, two huge new bedrooms with skylights and large windows, a sitting room with a bank of windows, lots of closets and a bathroom with skylight. The house is now really large with many spaces for a large group or two families like ours to find space and privacy.
We had a lovely weekend in the woods at this beautiful house. The yard is hours of entertainment for everyone. The kids explored, caught tad poles, played ball and hide and seek for hours. The deck was perfect for enjoying breakfast in the sun. The house was spacious and offered plenty of opportunities to be together or just sit and read a book. In addition, we were just 20 or so minutes away from skiing and had a great time one day. Next time we'll plan on a trip in the summer to take full advantage of the yard and the pond.
Great location and house. Lots of rooms and kitchen is top notch. Our family enjoyed our Christmas together there and enjoyed exploring the area.
For summer rental the pond is definitely the highlight. The picture doesn't describe this large weedless pond properly. Completely surrounded by woods on property that really has no visible neighbours this pond is the highlight of the rental. Air temp in August was low 80s and the surface water temp was probably mid 70s. Very cold a few feet deeper but that means you just have to float in comfort. The 2nd story south facing deck on the house was high enough to be bug free, catches the breeze and had a pleasing view of the big lawn and woods. Great for relaxing, dining or star gazing. Great Barrington is about 1/2 hour away which has the needed grocery stores (Guido's or the Co op), shopping, restaurants and a different hiking trail every day. Can't say much about the house because we spent most of the time outside. One drawback was that the TV had no cable or satellite reception but the wi fi was fast and reliable.
I am a doctor and my life is stressful. I sold my own summer home two years ago, and was looking last summer to go to a house that was quiet, beautiful, near nature and felt like a home. One I could come into clean and know everything would be there. A home, but better than a home, without the headaches!! This property exceeded our every expectation. Our days began with coffee on the deck. We had fabulous morning swims. Then had wonderful days walking, visiting towns in the Berkshires, buying antiques and hearing music. But we always had this spectacular oasis to come home to. We had a few terrific BBQs, a few nights singing under the stars. My kids, my wife, and I just had a lovely time.
We found this charming spot to house our first Berkshires getaway as a small group of friends and families and we will surely be returning to the area. The area is secluded and private. the pond is beautiful/scenic, a nice walk. The views of the woods right behind the home are an amazing view to wake up to! The kitchen is well-appointed (chef's knives, peelers, toaster, food processor, microwave, cutting boards) and so is the home's supplies. linens were plentiful. There is one small children's push trike and one men's adult bike, a small playground set by the shed for perhaps 3-9 year olds. the edna st. vincent millay home is just right down the road. The place is about 20-35 min drive from the typical Berkshire attractions. You must have a car - there is no town to walk to. The bedroom upstairs with the 3 singles is perfect for kids, with toy storage, so you certainly don't have to bring toys, and we found a few children's books too. There are adult books, cooking books and board games. The owner was very responsive (we had many emails and texts) with lots of great tips/ideas of what to do in the area. we were happy with our stay and you will be too!
What a great experience! We had an amazing time- everything was perfect.
Deidre, the owner was great and really easy to work with! When we arrived it was exactly what we wanted. The house was in the middle of NATURE. The property that surrounded the house was beautiful. When we walked inside the house, we were delightfully surprised! The pictures honestly do not do it justice! The house was big and bright with a ton of windows, and a small wood burning oven. Big table (which was perfect for our group). On the main level there were 2 ENORMOUS bedrooms (honestly 4 people could easily fit in these rooms) and a huge den. It had an additional bedroom upstairs. All the bedrooms were beautiful (I had a hard time choosing which one I wanted to stay in) with big windows!
Our favorite part of the stay was the pond that they built. The short walk to the pond is very much worth it- even if it’s just for the view! It’s a mini oasis (which is perfect for those who are coming from the city!) We WISHED it was summer- so we would be able to enjoy the space. Needless to say- we had a great time and even requested (immediately) to rent the house again! Definitely recommend!!
