Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-5)

Enjoy a rare opportunity to stay in one of the most historic homes in Grayton Beach -- The Smith House. Originally built as a 1-room cottage in 1925 by Tuff Smith, he used cypress boards that washed up on the shores of Grayton after the ship that was transporting the lumber caught fire and sank.

Lovingly renovated by a long-time Grayton family, the Smith House has all the modern conveniences but maintains its true southern “old Grayton” charm. Featuring vaulted ceilings and exposed beams, the house is decorated in vintage Florida style. Interior walls are fashioned from sinker cypress (with boards cut from giant cypress logs salvaged from the bottom of the Choctawhatchee River), the grain of each board a natural work of art. The kitchen, with its honed granite counters and ultra-quiet dishwasher, has everything you would need to cook a gourmet meal. The bathroom has been overhauled with a double vanity sink, and the double-bunk room has 2 extra-long bunk bed sets to accommodate both children and adults.

There is a 42-inch Smart TV in the living room (for instant connection to Netflix, Amazon videos, YouTube, music apps, etc.), a 32-inch flat-screen TV (with DVD player) in the master bedroom, and a 24-inch Smart TV in the bunk room, as well as wireless internet service. There is a portable CD player as well as a small music player that will play your ipod or other music device.

The best part of the house is probably the large screened porch, which includes 2 comfortable sitting areas, a rustic cypress dining table that easily seats 8, and a comfortable day bed for relaxing. Located just off the screened porch is a spacious enclosed outdoor shower, with hot and cold water. The side-yard consists of a large brick-paved patio with a picnic table, chairs, a mayan hammock and Weber charcoal grill.

After spending the day on the beach, you may want to use the 3 complimentary beach bikes to explore the adjoining beach towns in the late afternoon. In the evening, you have an easy walk to the world-famous Red Bar restaurant as well as several other outstanding dining opportunities.

The Smith House is the perfect vacation retreat for your family. You will want to come back year after year!

** The owners of the Smith House have a second rental cottage in Grayton, Stella Luna. Stella Luna is just up the street from the Smith House and will rent as either a 2 bedroom/2bath (sleeping 2-5; VRBO #380525) or as a 3 bedroom/3bath (sleeping up to 8; VRBO #361156)

About The Owner

I come from a long line of Walton County natives and spent every summer of my childhood on the sands of Grayton Beach. My husband & I moved here permanently when our sons were born and were lucky to have raised them in this magical beach town. We love the charm and authenticity of Old Grayton, the fabulous beach and lake, the friendly locals, and the quirky nature of our town. We are year-round residents of Grayton Beach and are available to answer any of your questions or help you with anything you need during your stay. We are honored to own the Smith House and hope that you will love the house and our town as much as we do.

What makes this cottage unique

Address: 267 DeFuniak Street, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459

There is so much to do in Grayton, from swimming, fishing, and surfing in the Gulf to playing in the 'pass' at Western Lake. You can try kayaking or Stand Up Paddle boarding - on the Gulf or on the calm waters of Western Lake - and you can snorkel on Grayton's new and amazing artificial reef structure off the State Park. Nearby you can find a world-class water skiing facility, dolphin cruises, freshwater springs, and even horseback riding stables. Fabulous restaurants are a short walk away, and there is also a little convenience store, a gym, and wonderful shops and galleries just down the street. Miles of white sand beaches surrounded by State Parks on all sides, and miles of off-road bike paths along 30A. Grayton is the epicenter of 30A!

Guestbook comments from the owner

It's Thanksgiving '09 and we've just now been relaxing in this beautiful cottage full of our left-overs...for almost 4 hours. When we drove up we ran in to check it out before we unpacked the car. It's perfect! We love it and wouldn't change a thing!

The bikes were so much fun! It was a great way to experience Grayton Beach. Thank you for allowing us to stay in this peaceful little bungalow! We will definitely be back! The Mann's Albany, GA

Smith House is wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I decided to make a quick trip to the Panhandle of Florida with our two kids. We had never been before and really didn't know where to stay but found Grayton Beach online. The Smith House was available and we decided we'd give it a try. What a perfect choice! It's an immaculate, perfectly appointed, authentic (1920's) beach cottage. Only about 3 short blocks to the most beautiful soft white sand beach you can imagine. We usually stay on the Atlantic side but after experiencing the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico we will definitely be back. The house has everything you could need. The beds are comfortable, there are three TV's (not that I watched them but the kids did) and a wonderful screened in porch for drinking coffee in the morning and enjoying a drink in the evening. We could bike to several restaurants and were only about 10 minutes from Seaside and Watercolors which were gorgeous (but very crowded). We were all happy to return to our quiet Smith house after a day of exploring. Every detail was handled by Kelly and she gave us many great recommendations for dining. This is the real deal for old Florida living. You won't be disappointed!!

Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The Smith House was everything we needed for our family get-away. The kitchen was well stocked, the screen porch and outdoor shower were well utilized, and it had what we needed for beach time. The location to the beach, state parks, and trails was perfect. To top all that off, the information about the house and community from the owners was very helpful. The comfort we experienced at the Smith House made our vacation one of our best.

Family Beach Trip

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Smith House. The location is great, just a short walk to the beach, shops and restaurants. The house and community of Grayton has a nostalgic "old Florida" atmosphere. We enjoyed relaxing on the screened in porch and beautiful patio. We have rented several different houses in Grayton Beach and the Smith House has been our family's favorite. It is truly even better in person. We are already planning to book the Smith House again next year!

Fabulous Stay Off 30A

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to this beautiful area for several years and The Smith House now tops the list as our favorite stay to date! You get everything you need for the beach, around the house and getting around (bikes!). Just relax and enjoy. Kelly is fantastic to work with and all the "local" information she provides leaves no stone unturned. The cottage is extremely comfortable and well appointed with everything you need for cooking, laundry, grilling, showering (inside and out) and lazy days! Kelly goes the extra mile providing coffee, paper products, spices, plenty of towels, and fresh flowers.

Walk to the beach, walk to the Red Bar, walk to coffee, breakfast, and shopping. Bike to Seaside for lunch or Blue Mountain Creamery for the perfect cone. It was great leaving the car parked and getting around on foot or bike for just about our entire trip! The location is perfect, right where you want to be without sacrificing the privacy you might prefer.

We always enjoy our time along 30A, but The Smith House spoiled us. A must stay if you're planning a trip to the beaches along 30A!

Fabulous place!

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay! Perfect for a low key couple, or small family, who enjoy the outdoors and and who can handle walking or riding bikes to the beach and/or dinner and shopping if you like. We have rented many places through VRBO and this was by far one of the best! Kelly, the owner, did an amazing job renovating this cottage. It feels so welcoming and comfortable! Small touches throughout the cottage, such as vases of palms and fresh flowers, old photos, and various books add to the relaxing ambiance. The kitchen cookware is topnotch for a rental unit, and almost everything you may need for cooking, laundry, beach fun, etc was carefully thought of and provided by Kelly, the owner. She was very good to work with! The outdoor shower and rocking chairs on the screened porch topped off what we thought were perfect accommodations!

Ahhhhhhh... Complete Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Couldn't have been happier at The Smith House. In addition to all the obvious beach necessities (bikes, wagon, sand toys) all the little things of being in a home are there - complete kitchen with spices, oils, paper goods, laundry detergent., etc. Also had beach towels, books and games. So nice not to have to bring or buy any of these things! Loved the outdoor shower, hammock and bbq grille. Nice flatscreen tvs for rainy days and great screened in porch for meals and watching the rain. Will definitely be back!
