Nestled above the legendary Loch Ness in the rolling hills of the Great Glen, Tychat House sits on a sprawling 38.5 acre estate and boasts panoramic views of Urquhart Bay and its Pictish ruins with the gracious Monalaidth Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. This secluded, charming and unique highland getaway is an idyllic holiday retreat - the view alone will keep you captivated for hours.
Renovated in 2008, the home’s interior is delightfully eclectic including a pictorial tribute to the owner’s famous scientific investigations into the existence of the Loch Ness monster. With views of the Loch from each room, Tychat House is the perfect place to “Nessie-watch.”
The ground floor features large picture windows and its open layout surrounds a wood-burning fireplace. Round every corner is another nook or snug with seating. During fine weather, the outdoor patio is perfect for enjoying the fresh highland air or dining, but don’t be surprised by the occasional woolly passer-by (sheep).
The first floor presents the choice of two spectacular double bedrooms. Both offer king-size beds, stellar views and private balconies - ideal for enjoying a morning cup of coffee or a quiet drink as the sun goes down. The third bedroom is equipped with a single trundle bed and is also endowed with the same breathtaking vista.
When you venture out you will be spoilt for choice of things to do in the area. Easy day trips include: The Loch Ness Exhibition Centre at the Drumnadrochit Hotel, Glen Affric, Fort Augustus (where you can see the famous Telford lock), Fort William, Aviemore (both have steam railways) Inverness City and its shopping, swimming pool and multi screen cinema, Culloden Battle Field and its visitors centre, take a boat trip on the Moray Firth so see the dolphins or board a real Loch Ness research vessel to search for Nessie.
The area is rich with history and nature. There is easy access to water sports, golf, fishing and walking/hiking. In fact, the ‘Great Glen Way’ footpath passes through the fields of Tychat Estate and is easily accessible from the house.

My family and I have owned this property since the early 1970s. It has become our beloved second home and my father, Robert H. Rines, has based his research into the Loch Ness Monster from this house for the last 30 years. We hope that you will enjoy the mystique, comfort and beauty that Tychat Estate provides. Not to mention, the possibility of catching a glimpse of Nessie : )
JUSTICE RINES purchased this house in 1978
This property is first and foremost our second home. We have decided to position the house as a vacation rental in order to help with the expenses of the property as well as open the doors to others who will experience one of the most mysterious, relaxing, beautiful and inspiring locations in the Highlands.
Privacy, beautiful vistas of the Great Glen and Loch Ness; including the ruins of Urquhart Castle. Easy access to the Great Glen Way, which passes through the 38.5 acre estate. Proximity to the Loch Ness exhibition center and other tourist attractions.
I did a brief search of houses in "the highlands region" in early 2012, as soon as I saw the picture of Loch Ness from the sunroom of Tychat house I knew I would stay here. Finally the time arrived and it lived up to my dreams of what it would be. We were a party of 6 adults, which was a bit crowded perhaps so if you aren't a close bunch you probably want to go for a smaller group. The layout of the house is great for flow and has plenty of quiet little nooks you can slip into, special favorites were in front of the enormous picture windows over looking the loch. The house is on the side of a fairly steep slope so make sure your car has a nice tight turn radius & good gears for climbing. The house is well furnished with glasses, but could use some more plates to get 6 adults through an entire day of dining at home. There are a lot of stairs and varying levels in the house as well as a note of caution for small children or those with mobility issues. Drumnadrochit is a lovely little town with lots to offer a vacationer. Fiddler's & The Loch Ness Inn were both enjoyed by our party. We made a day run ups to the Isle of Skye, down to Dalwhinnie & over the Malt Whisky Trail. My favorite spot of all though was right there in the house doing some Nessie watching. If you are up for a nice quiet relaxing vacation I highly recommend Tychat. I can certainly see myself back there many times in the years to come.
We travel extensively with our three children and we tend to stay in apartments/houses/villas instead of hotels. Tychat House is one of the most amazing places we have ever stayed through out all our travels in Europe and Asia! Our kids loved exploring it! It was greatly furnished, kitchen had anything you can imagine to stay there for weeks, if you wanted. The view--SPECTACULAR!! Beds are very comfortable, bedrooms have lots of space, all appliances work great. I must add that here you will also find the softest towels in Europe--no kidding!:) I recommend it to all of my friends who are travelling to the Highlands.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tychat. The location was perfect for day trips to many beautiful areas of Scotland. The house had all the amenities you could want in self-catering. The added bonus was free access to the cat for our entire stay. Or maybe we were his added bonus (he learned the beauty of prosciutto). Internet access was great, fireplace was nice on chilly nights. Nice deep soaking tub too. We would definitely stay here again (particularly if we can be assured a vacation cat).
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Tychat House so very much. We had a few interesting glitches because the internet cable and the water line were accidentally cut while we were there. Franz and his wife Mimi were on vacation, so it was sort of the "perfect storm" of things going wrong. Justice had a friend come and check on us and went the extra mile to see that we were taken care of. The problems caused us to cut our time at Tychat House short, but we felt that Justice was more than fair in his compensation and we will be back! The house itself could not be a more wonderful place. The views are dramatic and the house is very warm and inviting. Looking out over Loch Ness at Urquhart Castle all lit up at night was amazing. We loved having Tychat House as our "home base" while we wandered all over the highlands. We especially enjoyed dinner at The Kitchen in Inverness. It sits right on the River Ness with a beautiful view of the castle. We were pleasantly surprised that the weather in April was really wonderful. We had very little rain and the day time temps were in the 60 degree (F) range. We hopefully plan to return to Scotland with our adult children this summer and would love to stay at Tychat House again. Thank you, Justice for your kindness and fantastic customer service!
The pictures absolutely do not do this property justice! The scenery is even more stunning than the pictures can convey. We stayed here for 4 short nights. It was in a great location that allowed to explore the Highlands in the day and rest at night. The views from every window are just gorgeous. I loved sitting on the couch and looking out of the window. Inverness is less than a 20 minute drive away and Drum (I cannot remember how to spell the full name of the town) is less than 5 minutes away. If you need groceries I would recommend stopping at Tesco in Inverness. Drum does have a convenience store but it is limited in what it has and its hours. Franz, the caretaker, was very helpful during our stay. The cat which we named "Mr. Pillowpants" was very friendly and would always greet us when we returned from a long day out. The only downside was that we couldn't stay longer. Do not hesitate to book this property, it is as advertised and absolutely stunning. We hope to return someday.
Indescribable is the first word that comes to mind. Where to begin? The house was amazing. The views were incredible. You are actually staying in a part of history. Research for the Loch Ness Monster was actually done from this estate. You can visualize researchers looking at the lake from the solarium and the decks. We loved cooking in the kitchen. We actually cooked a haggis with neaps and taters with a whiskey crème sauce. The little firebox was great. It pumped out a ton of heat. We were blessed by the weather. Hardly any rain. 65 and perfect almost every day. We spent many nights on the deck outside the bedroom, having a dram, watching the boats, and looking at Castle Urquhart.
The owners are very willing and helpful. They set us up with golfing, fishing and horseback riding. The golf in Scotland is totally different than the golf in New Jersey and there are many beautiful courses in the area. Fly fishing was a blast. We each caught a tiny fish, but we caught something. We would have to set this up on our own, but the owners did this for us.
Franz and Mimi, the caretakers were as friendly as could be. Franz kept us supplied with wood for the fireplace, and we burned a ton of wood. Both were available to answer our questions about shopping, pubs and restaurants.
The most pleasant surprise was the cat. The caretakers have a tabby that we fell in love with. The cat basically stayed with us our entire stay. Murron, as we named her (William Wallace’s wife in Braveheart), was amazing. She was a talker. The first night she came in talking to make room for her in the bed. Seriously, the cat would hold a conversation with you. She would hang outside with us on the deck. The one rainy day, she never left the house.
There are some things to do. We ate at different places everyday, which included haggis at least once a day. Again the views from the house were incredible. As we stated, it was indescribable. We would recommend this cottage to anyone and we hope to return again someday. We cannot thank Justice, Mimi, and Franz, enough for their hospitality.
