Space 800 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3-5)

Come home to the old-time mountain cabin of your dreams -- a rustic, 1950s-era Grand Lake cabin rental with all the comforts of modern life, just minutes from Rocky Mountain National Park! This little slice of heaven offers stellar views of Park peaks and Shadow Mountain Lake from the large great room picture window and the huge wrap-around deck (which more than suffice for the purposeful lack of TV). Every day from this Grand Lake cabin vacation rental you'll see elk, moose, foxes, and more wildlife right out the front door! A fine and growing aspen grove greets you in the front yard. Inside and out, it's clean, peaceful, romantic, cozy and inviting -- it's all that and more!

This cute-as-all-get-out Grand Lake cabin rental has pinewood interior with an 11-foot-tall pitched ceiling with open beams, wood-burning stove and natural stone fireplace. It's truly a classic cabin with warm wood ambiance -- you'll love playing board games and reading or flat lazing away the day by the fire inside, but the outdoors are the finest playground in the Rockies. Master bedroom with queen bed (sleeps 2). In main room is the Murphy bed (sleeps 2), single bed, and short couch for naps or a child. No smoking indoors please. Nice campfire pit. All firewood is provided for free. Get in here! A wonderful time awaits you when you rent this Grand Lake cabin.

Guests have remarked that this humble yet sweet mountain cabin is the best vacation value west of the Mississippi, and certainly this side of the Great Divide. You'll cherish our authentic mountain retreat when you rent this Grand Lake cabin. Check out the reviews below. Some of our favorite comments from the guest registry:

“Thanks for making an affordable vacation in the Rockies possible.”

“Wow, what a beautiful cabin! Cooked in both nights, could hardly leave the peace and quietness of this wonderful cabin.”

“We felt at home as soon as we walked in the front door!”

“Doggies love it here.”

“You have a wonderful cabin -- the best we've found so far: comfortable (especially the bed) and warm and cabin-y!”

“We loved waking up to that view!”

“What a wonderful quiet mountain retreat! We thoroughly enjoyed being here -- the sky chair (we had to take turns!), your great assortment of board games, no TV or clock (hurray! thank you!), your clean and cozy cabin and fun fire pit.”

“We'll never forget the incredible wildlife, including the huge bull moose we saw while out for a walk and the red fox right outside the back door!”

The happy cabin lies just about two miles from the quaint Western town of Grand Lake - a wonderful town on the largest natural lake in Colorado that's great for couples and families. Walk (in winter, cross-country ski) out the cabin door to the lake or to the North Fork of the Colorado River. The dirt roads all around the cabin are great for dog walks, sweet views of the mountains and lakes and scattering of cabins and second homes.

In winter, Grand Lake is the self-proclaimed Snowmobile Capital of Colorado. Cross-country ski or snowshoe in the Park, or the Grand Lake nordic track (doubles as golf course in summer), drive 20 minutes to Sol Vista Ski Area, 25 minutes to Nordic ski areas, or 35 minutes to Winter Park and Mary Jane world-class downhill ski areas.

About Todd Runestad

Born in Colorado, raised back east, moved back to ski bum it after college, moved to the west coast, third time was the charm, this time with wife (to be) in tow. While I have been the typical Colorado guy who climbs mountains, Sweetie (the wife) always made me stop along the trail to smell the flowers and not overlook the way the sun sparkles through the aspen leaves. Our two young daughters go one better, stopping the both of us to point out worms and bugs along the trail.

Todd Runestad purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Todd Runestad chose Rocky Mountain National Park

Upon getting married in 1997, my wife and I searched the mountains of Colorado far and wide for our little slice of heaven. Our agreement (second of the summer!) was that the place had to 'sing' to the both of us. We figured we'd find a few acres and, someday, build an A-frame on it. In the third summer of our search, my wife overheard an office-mate talk about their Grand Lake cabin they were looking to sell. We headed up to look at it. I'll never forget when we walked up the steps and opened the front door to look inside. At the same second, we both said, 'Wow!' It was just what we were looking for -- charming, rustic, cozy, classic old-time mountain cabin. Sold! Total bonus that the town of Grand Lake is just as sweet a mountain town as you can ask for. Double-bonus that it's utterly kid-friendly, which works for our two girls just fine. Triple-bonus that the views from the cabin are into Rocky Mountain National Park.

What makes this cabin unique

In the time BC (Before Children) we would spend most weekends up at the cabin, and more often than not doing what might be described as exactly nothing. In winter months we'd sit in rocking chairs, feeding the wood stove, reading newspapers, magazines and books, watching the clouds float by above the lake and over the mountains of the park. We like to keep a look out the window or from the deck for elk and moose and foxes that live in the area -- never fails to excite. We like to play board games, from Monopoly and Battleship to Twister and backgammon, and take walks right out the door on the dirt roads over to the North Fork of the Colorado River or just around the area. Good fun mountain biking, too. Our dogs ('the boys') love the area, probably as much as we do -- and, with wild fragrances all around, maybe more!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Mud season" was perfect for Hot Sulphur Springs - cool and cloudy but no snow to get cold feet between pools.

Walking the dog around these dirt roads - good smells!

Cabin invites relaxation. We're playing lots of games - Mouse Trap, backgammon, Princess. Great fire in the wood-burning stove!

We spent the day at Hot Suphur Springs. Amazing hot tubs and some body work/facials. I would highly recommend this place fora visit.

We so needed a retreat and we received it and so much more. The love truly radiates from the walls.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to stay here in your cabin and explore Grand Lake and all your wonderful recommendations for dog hikes and food.

Thank you for welcoming our dogs as it makes it even more special to have the furry companions with us in a very cozy setting with a real log cabin feel. Gives us a real mountain experience!

Woof! Woof! Woof! -- The Girls

Had a very enjoyable first visit. Snowshoeing, snowmobiling and relaxing by the fire. Can't wait 'til next time!

It's amazing how much wildlife's here! We saw a black bear across the road. We went kayaking, and the cabin was rustically furnished. We loved it.

Saw moose on the front step the first day. Also saw our first bear in Rocky Mountain National Park. Quiet and comfortable. Enjoyed no TV and the radio.

The stars at night and a roaring fire in the hearth were the highlights of a great couple of days.

Late October:

Woodsmoke, pines,

sun falling on aspens --

their pale, naked boies,

birds darting in low branches,

the hills thick

with golden underbrush

gathered like fists

against the wind

against the brilliant snow

making its careful

irrevocable way

down the mountain.

Thank you so much for the use of your adorably cozy, romantic cabin.

Thank you for the amazing cabin! The views were incredible. It was one of our most relaxing vacations ever.

Ran into a couple moose at Pine Beach picnic grounds. Thanks for the hiking tips. Love this lil' cabin.

Average cabin close to Shadow Lake

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was clean, cozy and suited our needs for two days. There was no microwave for those wanting one. Owner was very nice and helpful. We had a very tiny view of the lake and parts of the cabin needed maintenance (caution tape on porch, burned out light bulbs).

Nice, cozy cabin...

  • 4 of 5

This cabin was rented for my adult children visiting us from out of town. It was roomy, cozy, and just what they needed for their short stay in Grand Lake.

Rustic Cabin in great location!

  • 4 of 5

If you are looking for a cozy, rustic cabin this is the place for you! This is the second time we have stayed in this cabin and have enjoyed both trips. We stay here because our dogs are welcome to stay with us. The bathroom is very small including the shower. The kitchen pans need updated and the pillows were very thin. We brought our camping grill and cooked most of our meals on the deck. The addition of WiFi was appreciated. No TV was not a problem! We were sad to find out that our dogs were no longer allowed to eat with us on restaurant patios. We really enjoyed being able to go out to eat with them. Owner responds quickly to answers. This place is worth the stay!

Owner's Response: Thanks for being a repeat customer! I appreciate your comments about the kitchen pans and pillows - I'll be sure to update both. For the record, we do have a new propane grill out back so you don't have to bring your own grill. Woof!

Very nice cabin in a pretty good location

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was clean and well maintained with plenty of room. Nice kitchen with some condiments already there. There was some ground coffee in the cupboard for the coffee maker that I used, and it was okay. Not sure how old it was. You might want to bring your own if you want a specific brand or freshness. It is a regular drip coffee maker.

It was really nice sitting out on the porch. There was a small view of the lake between some trees. For an incredible view of the lake and surrounding mountains just walk up the road to the highest area. We went up there around sunset and got some amazing pictures.

The dirt road is somewhat busy and there are many cabins on the road as it winds up the hill. There was some noise but not too bad. It got pretty quiet at night which was nice. There were a few mosquitoes but not a lot.

The outdoor swing broke when I tried to sit on it, so be wary of that. I'm not sure how reliable or safe an outdoor swing is in this environment. There is an outdoor propane grill that worked well. Also a fire pit but we did not use it.

The cabin is just a couple of miles south of the village of Grand Lake. A wonderful village in which you can spend many hours.

You could spend more for a better view of the lake or a more remote location, but overall this is a good value. The owner responded to my messages on HomeAway quickly when I had a question. We were at the cabin the last week of June, and it was about 70 during the day, although the sun made it feel a lot warmer, and about 40 at night.

Great Cabin

  • 4 of 5

This cabin was not as secluded as we had hoped but we were awe struck by the wildlife. In less than 48 hours we had 3 elk and 5 moose (2 bulls, 2 cows and a calf) in the yard! Beautiful! A portable fan would have been great for the bedroom! Thanks for the use of your cabin and we do hope to visit again. RMNP is a must see folks!

Great place to disconnect and reconnect!

  • 4 of 5

Cute little homey family cabin. Very accomodating owner for a very last minute trip with my daughter and grand-dogs. Dog friendly enough to provide ideas for walks with the pups which we enjoyed in spite of late spring snow. Enjoyed the views...spotted black bear on one walk and had a hungry momma moose in the front yard one day! She didnt mind us being right there on the deck snapping photos! We enjoyed stories from the books in the cabin....we are both readers...no wifi or tv fine with us! Just what we needed to disconnect and reconnect.Thank you for sharing your home!
