Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Waimea - Hale Lokahi

House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Welcome to 'Hale Lokahi', where the only thing between the lanai and the ocean is the long sandy beach that seems to go for miles. The covered oceanfront lanai runs the full width of the house, so you have a front row seat from which to view sizzling sunsets over the ocean towards the island of Niihau. There are very few actual beachfront houses on the Westside, as most have a road between the house and the ocean. BUT NOT HERE!

You can walk to anything and everything from this location. The Waimea River is just short walk away offering fishing and kayaking opportunities. In less than 5 minutes, you can walk to either of the large grocery stores in Waimea, several restaurants and shops, or take in a movie at the Historic Waimea Theater. Walk in the footsteps of Captain Cook, where he came ashore in 1778 as the first Westerner to come to Hawaii. This is old Hawaii and far from the tourist crowds. Quiet and peaceful with the dry sunny climate that guarantees you the best weather for your vacation.

This lovely “beach cottage” belongs to one of the older families of Kauai. Until recently, it was used exclusively by their large family as a place to get together and enjoy the beach. Newly renovated, they have opened up their home to share with a few lucky vacationers. This may be just the place you have been looking for.

This one story cottage sits on a large oceanfront lot and offers 3 bedrooms, two of which are Oceanside, and all 3 have a/c. There are three full baths, so no one has to wait to get ready to enjoy the day. Life here is meant to be lazy and enjoyed. Take a long walk on the beach, sit in the shade of the covered lanai, or just enjoy a good book waiting for one of those fabulous Westside sunsets. Because we face westward, this is the only part of the island that has a sunset view over the ocean, and what a view this is. This house is spacious enough for 3 couples, a large family, or a couple celebrating their wedding with a wonderful honeymoon. There is a large kitchen, fully equipped to make a gourmet meal at home served at your own private ocean-side table. All the furniture and bedding is new along with an updated kitchen and baths. It’s not likely that you will have a rainy day here on the Westside, but if you want to catch one of those morning football games or watch a movie, you have a new 40'' flat screen LCD television complete with 'High Definition' Cable service! We also have a blu-Ray/DVD player, stereo system with CD and ipod dock, and of course, wireless Internet so you can stay stay connected.

So what are you waiting for? If you have the time, we have the perfect place for your vacation.

Guestbook comments from the manager

My husband and I spent a week at Hale Lokahi for Thanksgiving 2010 after a few days on the Big Island. I am a sunset fanatic and took photos of sunset from just about everywhere on Kauai. The best ones by far (including those taken from the Napali Coast Sunset Boat Tour) were the ones taken right off the lanai at Hale Lokahi.

We were a bit worried that there would not be enough snorkeling or activities to occupy a week on Kauai but we could not have been more wrong.

This island is heaven on earth.

The house in Waimea was the perfect respite away from the traffic and activity of the the rest of the world - even though we drove to the North Shore 3 times during the week, we were glad to come 'home' to a clean, comfortable, restful spot that had exactly what you want on a good beach vacation - no more, no less.

The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare the food we got at the Times Market and Farmers Markets. The laundry room off the garage with the giant sink was perfect for all of our 'red dirt' concerns. The beach gear (towels, chairs, cooler, and mats) let us relax and not have to run around looking for convenienece items. The living room with entertainment system, map, and ultimate Kauai guide felt just like our living room in Austin, Texas.

Best of our entire vacation was sleeping 30 feet from the rolling surf every night.

I had to roll video to make sure we captured that sound to take home with us for restless nights back in Texas.

Thank you Chad for letting us stay at Hale Lokahi for our best vacation yet!

Spacious Lanai With Nice View Of Ocean

  • 3 of 5

Since my review wasn't published the first time, I thought I'd try rewriting it and sending it again. This time I edited it more so that maybe they'll actually publish someone's that isn't a 5 star rating. These reviews should be fair and not biased by only listing the 5 star ones. This was our first time to Kauai. The main goal was oceanfront, private and quiet. The description fails to mention while it is oceanfront, there are cars & trucks that drive on the beach in front of the lanai at all different times of the day & night and everyday. This beach isn't a swimming beach either. So these two things were a real downer to our 9 night stay. The pros, the house was well laid out and spacious for our family of five. Had AC, washer/dryer, cabinets had everything we needed. No dishwasher, however. Lots of windows to look out at the water. Unfortunately, the neighbors out front of the house right across the narrow road had multiple dogs that barked continuously. Thankfully, we were in and out of the house and didn't have to listen to it all day. The dogs barking made the roosters a welcoming way to awaken to each morning. After contacting the manager after two days about the vehicles driving on the beach in back of the house from the lanai... and being very upset about it. As well as a homeless camp just down the road. He did offer to let us move to a condo further towards town but it was a smaller place and we didn't know anything about the other place, so we chose to stay put. I wouldn't rent here again. While the house was older but well equipped and was fine that way. The other elements couldn't be overlooked. If these types of things don't bother you, then I believe the house itself with the ocean view would be worth it.

Owner's Response: It’s unfortunate that this guest, who was obviously unwilling to embrace the local Hawaiian culture, chose to rent a house in a residential village. It's apparent to me that it would have been a better fit had she stayed in a hotel near other tourists, and just observed the "real" Hawaii from a distance. As you’ll notice by reading every other review, most people who choose to stay here, absolutely love it, and then book return stays. We manage several vacation homes on Kauai, so when this guest contacted me, I gave her the option to relocate into a resort property. I assumed that would make her stay on the island more comfortable, but she chose not to relocate, and stayed in this house for the duration. After doing all I could to accommodate this guest, I find it very peculiar, and I’m not sure exactly what she was trying to accomplish by deciding now (6 months after her stay) to leave a questionable review on the website. Waimea is an authentic Hawaiian town. When staying here, you get the opportunity to meet the real Hawaiian residents, and if you're so inclined, mingle with them, and experience what it's like to actually "live" in Hawaii during your visit, not just experience the illusion that a resort environment offers. Yes, this (and every) local town on the island has it’s share of chickens, dogs, etc., and that’s because people actually “live” here. It is customary on Kauai that residents drive their vehicles on the beaches, and they also love to camp out on the beaches. Even if you’re lucky enough to find a rental house “on” a beach, you won’t have that beach all to yourself because every beach on the island is public. Staying in the town of Waimea has wonderful benefits like being the closest town to the Waimea Canyon, (the island’s best hiking opportunities). It also has the island’s best weather. (Sunny all the time), and the only spot on the island where you can watch the sun set over the ocean. (because we face west). While not many people typically swim in Waimea, the main swimming beach where everyone in West Kauai goes to swim is less than a 3 minute drive from the house. This home offers unobstructed, ocean front views, and is an absolute premier ocean front rental for a stay in west Kauai. Over half of our guests are repeats, who return year after year, so if you're tired of the resort atmosphere, and want to experience what Hawaii really is, this house is probably the perfect fit for you.

Most wonderful vacation ever

  • 5 of 5

This vacation has been a long time dream that was put into motion in early 2015. We had searched Homeaway.com for island rentals and found this wonderful gem that was the perfect place to spend the second week of our time in paradise. Although the beach is not for swimming, it is a beautiful brown sand and you are right there for the sea breeze and the surf to put you to sleep at night. Walking the beach was great, watching the whales, and taking walks to the main street of Waimea to stroll through the shops or get lunch at a local restaurant was enjoyable. Great ice cream shop too. We would not hesitate to return to this island and this wonderful home away from home.

Absolutely love this house!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 4th year staying at Hale Lokahi, and we've already put down a deposit for next year. Everything you've read about the house from others is spot on. Chad is easy to work with and Sarah took care of a broken screen door in one day - exceptional customer service. We've rented other VRBO houses, and none of them have the well-stocked kitchen that this home has - especially dry goods (spices, pasta, rice, canned goods) and refrigerator condiments (salad dressings, sriracha, wasabi, soy sauce, mayo, relish, other surprises). We love walking to Ishihara's every morning to get a newspaper and something fun for lunch (which flavor of poke today?) or contemplate what to grill for dinner (Kekaha shrimp? Char Sui chicken? Teriyaki beef?). Wrangler's is fun for dinner, and a walk via the beach to Kalapaki Joe's is fun, too. Don't forget to have a shaved ice and eat at the Shrimp Station. Dragging out chairs every evening to watch the sunset with a glass of wine, returning to cook dinner, laying on the beach after dinner to marvel at the stars, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves relaxes us beyond belief (as evidenced by my husband's FitBit). So much to do on Kauai! Absolutely love love love this house!

Comfortable, casual and well-equipped

  • 5 of 5

Hale Lokahi is a nice home with all of the basics and a few extras.

It’s comfortable and casual – perfect for a Kaua’i vacation

We use VRBO almost exclusively when we travel, we particularly appreciated that this house had:

• Ample towels - for bath, beach and kitchen

• Beach chairs

• Gas Grill

• Outdoor table & chairs

• Covered deck

If possible, you should arrive at the house before you do any shopping. The house is very well equipped and well stocked.

Sarah, the property manager, is a gem. We encountered 2 issues and Sarah was responsive and helpful with both. I do want to emphasize that neither was a problem with the home itself (in one case the city briefly turned off water w/o notifying anyone, and the other was a Time Warner issue w/ the internet). One benefit of running into these issues, is that we got a chance to meet Sarah, she really is a wonderful person. All renters can take comfort in knowing she is around if you should need her.

We love the location. It's away from the major tourist areas, just steps to Ishihara Market, and an easy drive to numerous beaches and other sites. The views of the beach from the deck are magnificent, and the sounds of the waves are hypnotic. As others have mentioned, it's not the most pristine water due to the proximity of the river. It should be noted that people do drive onto the beach - so you will have some "traffic". Just part of the local flavor.

Finally, we appreciated the flexibility of being able to have a late checkout before our red-eye flight back to the mainland for a reasonable rate. Leaving paradise is never easy, but having a late checkout makes it so much more convenient.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Chad was easy to work with and gave us helpful tips for our stay. The house had so many extras (like snorkeling equipment and beach chairs) that came in handy and saved us a lot of time and money. The sound of the ocean lulled us to sleep every night, and the town is within walking distance. We spent most days at Salt Pond Beach--stunning and close by. The Shrimp Shack is a do not miss. Also be sure to go to Waimea Canyon. We went twice during our week-long visit. The stargazing from the beach in front of the house is amazing! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!!
