About Ken and Sarah

We both live in San Francisco, are self-employed, have two children and spend as much time in Burgundy, France as we can...our alternative universe.

Ken and Sarah purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Ken and Sarah chose Montbard area

Sarah stopped by this charming little town and fell instantly in love. The first time she brought Ken here, it was so beautiful he cried. Now it is how we balance our busy lives in SF.

What makes this cottage unique

We love to dine on the patio in the garden with the panoramic views of the towers and listen to the bird song. It is so peaceful and quiet. During the French school year, children's laughter echoes in the valley from the school above. We enjoy the cherries and apples from the orchard, and in good years we make wine from our vineyard.

Charming home in an enchanting village

  • 5 of 5

Ken and Sarah's home offers a charming retreat in the enchanting village of Semur-en-Auxois. The house has clearly been restored to highlight its original features, while providing modern conveniences for today's traveler (e.g. Washing machine & dryer, dishwasher, a true cook's cooking ware). Also it is furnished both comfortably and stylistically with attention to detail. Semur-en-Auxois is a cute medieval village that also offers great conveniences --good restaurants, tasty boulangeries, and a convenience store that is open every day. These are all walking distance to the house. We stayed here for five days and it also provided a great base for exploring Burgundy, from wine tasting in Beaune to learning about Vercingetorix at the Musee Parc Alesia. We would love to find the opportunity to come back!

Comfortable and convenient base for the Cote d'Or

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed here twice in the past couple of years, and look forward to returning. Sarah and Ken have created a comfortable home away from home for people who want to enjoy Semur and the wider experience of Bourgogne.

Semur is an amazing example of a well preserved medieval city. It's small enough that you can cover it on foot easily, but big enough to have a selection of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, wine shops and even a supermarket. There is a lot to explore.

From this location, it's an easy drive or bus/train to Dijon, Beaune and Paris. There are lots of interesting small towns in the region just a few minutes away by car. The house contains a collection of travel information in several languages. WiFi makes it easy to do internet research as necessary.

The house is equipped with everything you need for a short or long stay. It's well located for easy access to town. Having access to the private garden and courtyard is an extra plus in the summer for those who like to dine outside. I recommend it heartily.

atmospheric cottage with fantastic view

  • 5 of 5

The cottage has a very home-like atmosphere and is full of antiques and personal touches. everything you could need was provided. We loved the view from the dining table and the front bedroom, and also the bbq in the orchard around the corner. There are lovely river walks from the front door for a relaxing evening. The area has a lot to offer: chateaux, villages, vineyards - we easily occupied a week. We would return again. Ken and Sarah are very easy and friendly owners.

The Sweet Life in Semur

  • 5 of 5

This was a trip with my daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and wife to renew our French experiences before another grandchild was added. We spent 3 days in Paris which was wonderful but wanted to experience the slower pace of a small village.

We were in the house in Semur about 3 minutes and my son-in-law questioned why we had spent any time in Paris. The rental was so inviting and engaging we had to pinch ourselves that we were not in a dream. This was all we could have hoped for and more. Every comfort and amenity was met. The house was clean, the beds comfortable, the village within a 5 minute walk. The owners were very accommodating of our 2 1/2 yr. old granddaughter with her sleeping arrangements. We truly felt we had stumbled on jewel. It felt like "home".

All of this is in addition to the friendliness of the neighbors and the acceptance of the villagers. Our time was truly a "moment of happiness".

Wonderful completion to a French holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage the last 5 nights of a month-long French holiday. The place was perfect for us, quiet, relaxing, beautifully furnished and in a magical setting along the river beneath the village towers. The owners also have quite the library of travel information as well as classics. It was great to just sit with the shutters open listening to a storm rumble through reading a book in the heart of Burgund while enjoying the nice gift basket left for us at our arrival. Life does not get much better than that,

The cottage was a little hard to find at first but only because I did not pay careful enough attention to the directions. Once we were situated it provided remarkable easy access to the village (albeit up 142 steps - good excersize) as well as the surrounding French countryside.

Arrangements were handled by professionally dispite the many changes in schedule that we initiated due to our changing travel plans

Would love to stay here again if our travels take us to this lovely area or Burgundy in the future.

Perfect location in a beautiful medieval village

  • 5 of 5

We have visited Semur-en-Auxois a number of times on day trips over the past 12 years. In 2012 we wanted to find a cottage so we could stay for a week. We chose this property for its close location to Pont Pinard and the amazing views of the town in this area. We are a family 3 adults and 1 young child and were very satisified - from the location to comfort and the range of facilities available. The charming adjacent orchard and vineyard were a bonus and a great place to enjoy leisurely time outdoors in a private setting. Just a short walk over Pont Pinard to the steps leading to the upper town. We would happily stay here again. Semur-en-Auxois is still one of our favourite towns in France.

Car: recommended

Lovely Semur-en-Auxois is a hidden jewel of the famous Burgundy region. There are many nearby wineries and historical points of interest for day trips. Each spring there are music and Medieval festivals and even a horse race through town. There is also a large freshwater lake just 3 km from the house that feeds the Burgundy canals for swimming and boating. The rolling hills and lush country side make for wonderful bike rides.

Although a car is recommended, it is not necessary. The bus stop is about 300m from the house. The TGV Train drops you off in nearby Montbard and during commute times there is a connecting bus waiting at the train station for the 20 minute ride to Semur. For sight seeing, buses to local towns are frequent and inexpensive. There is a tourist office staffed with an English speaker at the town gate (on your walk between the bus stop and the house) which will help you with bus schedules and local attractions.

One hour away by car in the 'grottes' of D'Arcy sur Cure there are prehistoric cave paintings dating back 28,000 years.

Other Activities: shopping, boating on the canals, hiking and bicycles for rent in town.
