Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + 2 Convertible sofa sleepers, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-8)

This is a wonderful old Taos adobe home. The original house (now bedroom #2) was once the home of a family of 9-kitchen and bath then were outdoors. It is thought to be 250+ years old and is considered an historical property. Like many Taos homes it was added to in the ensuing years.

This home is delightful for a couple. It is a spacious home which is unusual for an old adobe. The layout is perfect for a couple and would be especially comfortable for two couples since the two good sized bedrooms each have full, private baths and are separated by the sunroom and great room. There is a queen sofa sleeper in the sunroom and in the great room is another queen sofa sleeper. The house is cozy in the winter due to thick adobe walls, two operable kiva fireplaces and very efficient gas heaters in great room and each of the two bedrooms.. There is always a good supply of firewood under the carport. Summer is delightful and cool inside with screened operable windows and swamp coolers . Great for outdoor living with a covered deck off master bedroom and a wonderful front flagstone patio with table and chairs, BBQ and outdoor fireplace. The house is furnished with interesting antiques. sculpture and original art. The kitchen is fully equipped and ready to produce those gourmet feasts or a quick snack for two. Bathroom #2 has a washer and dryer for those chores that call out even on vacation. The yard is fenced and well behaved dogs are welcome at a small additional fee. ($25 per dog per visit)

Just found out this home will be featured on next summers Taos Home & Garden Tour in August! This is my fourth home to be featured on a Tour! Too much fun and such a great compliment to my style!

If my calendar shows this home as booked please look at Vrbo 273116, Vrbo 379064 or Vrbo 972841. All are two bedroom homes that I own or manage in Taos.

The house has a wonderful, peaceful feeling and yet is only a few minutes from all Taos has to offer..good restaurants, shops including MY shop Red Cat Melissiana. ,galleries, the Taos Pueblo and many great outdoor activities).

Keywords: cozy, yet spacious, beautifully decorated and mountain views too and pet friendly

About Melissa /Taos mgr.

I was a California landscaper who wanted a simpler life so I moved to Taos. I fell in love with an old adobe home by the river and bought it. Then I fell in love with another old adobe and bought it for a vacation rental. I have a shop in downtown Taos Red Cat Melissiana 110 Dona Luz in the Guadelupe Plaza just behind the main Plaza. It is very 'Taos Eclectic' and must be seen to be believed...

Melissa /Taos mgr. purchased this house in 2007

Why Melissa /Taos mgr. chose Ranchos de Taos

I love old adobe homes. They have such substance, personality and character This house has a cozy and welcoming feeling that everyone who has stayed here comments on and yet for an old adobe is amazingly spacious. The house has a private enclosed yard, is nicely landscaped (next project big container plants and an irrigation system) and great mountain views.

What makes this house unique

This home has the charm of an old adobe (original room 250 years+) but has all the modern amenities we expect. It is in a quiet location, yet only minutes from all Taos has of offer (i.e. restaurants, galleries, the pueblo and outdoor adventures) I love the deck for sunsets and the outdoor patio, the 4 kiva fireplaces (each bedroom, great room and sunroom) the wood and brick floors and the 46 (count them!) overhead vigas as well as the 14' thick walls. Owner lives 5 minutes away to answer any questions or provide information.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved staying in your wonderful house. I loved your gardens, both flower and vegetable. We enjoyed three meals from your vegetable garden and each was such a treat. I picked apples off the ground and will make jelly when I go home. I'll send you some. Our week in your home was everything we could have asked for and more. You have created a paradise. Thank you for sharing it!

Wonderful adobe house, pure charm

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I loved our stay here! We hope to return again in the future. For those who have never experienced what it's like to stay in a true adobe house, this is a great opportunity to do so. The house is perfectly and charmingly decorated. The back deck is covered and we spent most evenings there dining on cheese, crackers and wine while watching the sun set or enjoying a mountain rain shower. Disregard what one reviewer said about the neighborhood -- this is typical Taos. Many homes are modest but like any community there are always one or two unsightly structures. However, we never felt unsafe. In fact, during the evenings, many of the surrounding houses had children playing outside. We highly recommend this spot as a place to spend time, relax and enjoy Taos and Northern New Mexico.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. I especially appreciated your comment about the neighborhood. Yes there is a trailer down the road, but the folks there have always been good neighbors. Whenever I stay at this home I snap the screen doors and leave the main doors open and enjoy the night time breezes. I have never felt at all unsafe. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. It truly is a wonderful old adobe with all the charm of the past and lovingly restored by me. In fact it appears it will be featured on the Taos Home & Garden Tour next summer. This will mark the 4th time one of my homes has been on the Tour. My homes are always popular as well as the most fun! 12" thick walls, 46 ceiling vigas with fireplaces in every room. Back bedroom has plank floors with square nails! Truly a special old adobe with modern amenities. How nice you mentioned the back deck. The shade structure over it is only a month old. Prior to that it was just too hot to enjoy during the day and no protection from the rain. Now it looks like it has been there forever! We have also completed the front patio shade structure so now there are two all weather outdoor living spaces. This fall we are redoing both bathrooms with new tubs and random tile enclosures. I hate those acrylic one piece tubs/showers. Always upgrading and improving. Part of the fun for sure...

We enjoyed our stay at this house. 6 of us slept comfortably and everything was in working order.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. I pride myself in staying on top of things and am constantly upgrading. Just this year new screened/operable wood windows, a deck shade cover as well as a front portal shade cover. Now guests can enjoy either for a noon lunch on a hot day or even in the rain. Just ordered a new sofa sleeper for great room. Next new curtains. Too much fun and my guests seem to love the house. Such charm in an old, historic adobe.

Very interesting property

  • 4 of 5

What a charming place. Nice front yard for eating, fenced for a pet. Large space, 2 bed rooms at either end of the house. Very nicely decorated, really beautiful folk art, though the couches are showing their age. Low ceilings, big old beams. The floors are uneven, part of the charm, but a challenge for the alter-abled. Swamp coolers through out the house, not very helpful, but the evening breezes are nice. Very much would appreciate a fan in the bedroom off the kitchen, there is no cross breeze. Laundry is a nice touch! Kitchen well stocked, though I couldnt find scissors. The toilet paper and the beds share something in common, very hard! Perhaps the TP is special for a septic system?

Owner's Response: Hi thanks for the review. Actually I have just ordered new queen sofa sleepers for this house. They will be delivered soon! As for swamp coolers most guests find them delightful in this dry climate. There is a floor stand fan in back bedroom and swamp coolers are portable. All doors and windows are screened for night time breezes. Sissors are in far left utility drawer on the kitchen island or were when I last did inventory there. I have given up on pleasing everyone on the firmness of beds issue! It's like Goldilocks--some say too soft, some say too firm, some just just right... First time I have ever been critiqued for toilet paper...

Amazing Stay...pure Taos, peaceful and enchanting

  • 5 of 5

This house was incredible! Beautifully decorated, every detail was included, modern amenities in a historic adobe house. The yard was a wonderful private desert landscape with sage and stone, several seating areas including a nice patio in the front of the house with a grill and a quiet second patio right of the main bedroom with beautiful views of Tres Piedras and the Taos landscape. I would recommend this vacation rental to anyone who wishes to experience Taos in its purest form.

Owner's Response: What a nice review! Thank you so much. It is a great old adobe. I love furnishing and decorating (so much fun) and pride myself on having all amenities to make my guests stay more enjoyable. You were the first guests to enjoy the back deck with overhang. Previously it was just too hot to enjoy during the day. Always thinking of new improvements and upgrades

Warm summer night

  • 4 of 5

Our family was in town for a wedding and everything at the home was very nice. It was quiet and private. If I had to make a suggestion it would be to have something to cover the skylight that is directly over one of the beds. I definitely would recommend staying there and hope to again someday.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review and glad you liked the house. Bingo! Perfect suggestion about the skylight! Don't know why I didn't think of it myself. My friend and co-worker just hemmed shears for the three skylights in my little house and what a difference it made. Shears filter yet soften the light. Perfect suggestion and will do!!

Truly Charming

  • 5 of 5

I'm glad she sent directions because cell service for Verizon was spotty. The home was much larger than I'd anticipated. There was brand new roasting sticks, wood, and Boy Scout water waiting for us as we arrived - so S'Mores were a must!!! I loved character or the home; I'm from NM so adobe was nothing new but the age & history of this home made it much more special. I love Melissa's properties. We've stayed a couple now. I'll always stay @ her place when we come back later in the fall. Thank you!!

Owner's Response: Such a nice review! Yes it is a wonderful old adobe. I'm not good at square footage, but I do know it is spacious yet friendly and cozy. I always appreciate return visitors especially ones who have stayed at a number of my places and enjoy my style!
