Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Taos

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible sofa sleeper, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

This is a wonderful old Taos adobe home. The original house (now bedroom #2) was once the home of a family of 9-kitchen and bath then were outdoors. It is thought to be 250+ years old and is considered an historical property. Like many Taos homes it was added to in the ensuing years.

This home is delightful for a couple. It is a spacious home which is unusual for an old adobe. The layout is perfect for a couple and would be especially comfortable for two couples since the two good sized bedrooms each have full, private baths and are separated by the sunroom and great room. There is a sofa sleeper in the sunroom and and in the great room is a sofa for an additional guest.(Up to a total of 7guests) The house is cozy in the winter due to thick adobe walls, four kiva fireplaces and a very efficient gas heater. There is always a good supply of firewood under the carport. Summer is delightful and cool inside and great for outdoor living with a deck off master bedroom and a wonderful front flagstone patio with table and chairs, BBQ and outdoor fireplace. The house is furnished with interesting antiques. sculpture and original art. The kitchen is fully equipped and ready to produce those gourmet feasts or a quick snack for two. Bathroom #2 has a washer and dryer for those chores that call out even on vacation. The yard is fenced and well behaved dogs are welcome at a small additional fee. ($25 per dog per visit)

The house has a wonderful, peaceful feeling and yet is only a few minutes from all Taos has to offer..good restaurants, shops including MY shop Red CatMelissiana. ,galleries, the Taos Pueblo and many great outdoor activities).

Keywords: cozy, yet spacious, beautifully decorated and mountain views too and pet friendly

PLEASE NOTE; Even if my calendar says this property is reserved contact me. I have a total of 10 Taos rentals (soon it will be 14...) and have accommodations for any size group...

About Melissa Serfling

I was a California landscaper who wanted a simpler life so I moved to Taos. I fell in love with an old adobe home by the river and bought it. Then I fell in love with another old adobe and bought it for a vacation rental. I have a shop in downtown Taos Red Cat Melissiana 110 Dona Luz in the Guadelupe Plaza just behind the main Plaza. It is very 'Taos Eclectic' and must be seen to be believed...

Melissa Serfling purchased this house in 2007

Why Melissa Serfling chose New Mexico

I love old adobe homes. They have such substance, personality and character This house has a cozy and welcoming feeling that everyone who has stayed here comments on and yet for an old adobe is amazingly spacious. The house has a private enclosed yard, is nicely landscaped (next project big container plants and an irrigation system) and great mountain views.

What makes this house unique

This home has the charm of an old adobe (original room 250 years+) but has all the modern amenities we expect. It is in a quiet location, yet only minutes from all Taos has of offer (i.e. restaurants, galleries, the pueblo and outdoor adventures) I love the deck for sunsets and the outdoor patio, the 4 kiva fireplaces (each bedroom, great room and sunroom) the wood and brick floors and the 46 (count them!) overhead vigas as well as the 14' thick walls. Owner lives 5 minutes away to answer any questions or provide information.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved staying in your wonderful house. I loved your gardens, both flower and vegetable. We enjoyed three meals from your vegetable garden and each was such a treat. I picked apples off the ground and will make jelly when I go home. I'll send you some. Our week in your home was everything we could have asked for and more. You have created a paradise. Thank you for sharing it!

Upon arriving at house the temperature inside the house was at least 85 degrees and outside temperature was in the 80, horrible conditions to arrive in. We called the owner and she said there was no AC and to turn on the fans and open the doors and the temperature should be down by morning. Which was not unacceptable and we would never leave doors open as the house wasn't in the greatest of neighborhoods. We ended up not staying and and calling around and found a bed breakfast and got a room where we could be comfortable. We asked the owner if she could give us credit for a future stay but she was not willing to do so. it was advertised as heating & AC. But there was no AC. Sad, whatever happened to customer service?

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at this property on February 26, 2016 through February 28, 2016 with my fiancé and two friends. We were all delighted with how cozy and clean this rental was. I would definitely consider returning to this rental for our next visit to Taos!

side note: we were surprised when we entered inside and saw how much space there was as I didn't get the full impression from the photos.

Thanks Melissa!

Good layout and great for pets

  • 4 of 5

I liked the rustic feel of the house and the fenced in yard was great for our small dogs. My husband was unhappy with the "vintage" tv that had no reception. Once we saw how much traffic there is in town I was glad that we were in a quiet area.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. Glad your dogs liked the fenced yard. Yes sometimes downtown Taos can be a bit congested and some folks like to be away from that especially since you are a short drive to the Plaza when you choose to go into town. I'm sorry your husband had difficulties with the TV.. Some guests are not familiar with satellite Tv. My next guests mentioned that they ended up watching very little TV because they enjoyed my collection of DVD's and yes, the "vintage" Videos.

Delightful Adobe Abode!

  • 3 of 5

Just as the name of this Taos adobe states, it is indeed charming. Quiet residential location away from the traffic and tourists in town. We thoroughly enjoyed our evenings outside on the patio with a toasty fire burning in the built-in pit, seeing brilliant stars and the super moon without commercial lights to dim the experience. Melissa had provided everything you might need except for a few minor items I found oddly absent. The lighting in the home is abysmal...not enough to read in bed; had to rearrange lamps at bedside to accommodate my nighttime reading habit and then it was not sufficient. Lighting okay in kitchen, but the adjoining living area had just one low watt floor lamp and a tiny desk light. Perhaps the wiring is old and can't handle higher wattage, but because of the uneven flooring, it could be somewhat of a hazard walking about. The house is not really for older people who have balance problems, due to the uneven levels both inside and out. There needs to be a drinking glass in the bathrooms...my room was distant from the kitchen and had to make my way without much light in the middle of the night to get one. A water glass would be a great convenience in the bathrooms - even plastic cups would do! I liked the setting, the old thick walls and vigas throughout the house, the fence surrounding the property was "decorated" with old artifacts, implements within frames - Melissa has a very creative touch! I just couldn't give it 5 stars, despite my enjoyment of her property, because it was a tad worn and tired looking within and did present some safety issues for less sure-footed and sighted travelers. We got great service, directions, suggestions from Melissa who has a unique shop downtown. It would be a great place for a younger guys or girls' group getaway.

Owner's Response: Hi, thanks for your review. I find reviews so important. Of course I love it when guests go on and on about my style, my friendliness etc. However, reviews are also a great learning experience about I can do things to make my spaces even more special. Yes, reading lights in bedrooms are important and those bedside lights are really dresser lights. Also it is easy to put more lamps in the great room by the couch so thsnks for that. Old adobes like this one at two hundred years old were not much for lighting. Everyone worked so hard that when it got dark, they went to bed! I love buying lamps and consignment stores in Taos are great so on my list (in between my many guests are : 1. two god bedside lamps 2. table or floor lamps (at least two ) in great room. I like to say "I sleep around". Not what you think... I stay in all of my properties from time to time to enjoy and critique. The last time I stayed here I thought I needed to mark step areas--not a lot of stairways, but just a step down from master bedroom to living room and a step up from 2nd bedroom to second bath. These old homes kept getting added on to through the years and there are level changes. I so hated painting a line on the old brick steps, but I did and of course used my favorite Taos Turquoise paint. There were night lights there, but I guess some guests miss that fact. Now lines are painted there. So again thanks for your input and I get to go lamp shopping! Yay!!! A P.S. I have gone to the house and seen that blue lines are now painted on the various one steps throughout the house. I did hate putting paint on those old bricks, but actually it looks nice and matches the color scheme of the house. Both bathrooms now have water glasses. I put taller lamps in the second bedroom for easier bedtime reading. I took over additional lamps for each end of both couches, but each one already had a table lamp and floor lamp by each. Maybe the spirits who must live in a house 200+ years were hiding your lamps...

Wonderful, truly a Taos experience.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this historic home. It was truly a treasure. Filled with unique furnishings and everything we needed for our stay.

It was spacious enough that we hosted a dinner for twelve during our family gathering. Plenty of room for all.

I wish it had new cooler and we would have taken advantage of the kiva fireplaces.

Quiet neighborhood and privacy.

If you want an authentic experience , this is the place.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your nice review. It is a great old home. Original house is over 200 years old. It is cozy and yet spacious enough for your big dinner party. I'll bet your guests enjoyed it too. Lots of folks like the fact that is outside the downtown area--easy to get there, but quiet and not downtown traffic.

Fun and Comfortable place

  • 4 of 5

Other than a few communication glitches regarding directions, this was a great experience. Phone service can be spotty so make sure you have your GPS directions printed out on hard copy in advance. It might help to have listed directions in addition to the map, especially at night. The place had a lot of steps, and uneven floors so not ideal for those who may have trouble with these obstacles. 3 steps down to front door...2 more steps down once inside to main floor, 2 steps up to bedroom #1, 1 step up to bathroom in bedroom #2 etc...my friend tripped and skinned a knee. Other than that it was very positive. We grilled, chilled and found our way around the area quickly.

Owner's Response: Hi and thanks for the review. Yes these old adobes have some ups and downs since they often started as a small one room home 200 years ago and just kept growing. Part of the charm to many, but not if a step here and there is a problem. I always send my guests directions before they arrive. The Canyon has no cell service so we did have a challenge there. I am glad I had a vacancy in one of my other rentals when you arrived a day early in a downpour with all the power in town out! Quite an exciting introduction to Taos. I'm glad it all worked out and you enjoyed your stay and were able to relax. I do have one house that is totally all on one level so next time...
