Overview

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Beynac-et-Cazenac - La Maisonnette du Côteau

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Resting atop an enchanting Medieval village and right next to a pristine castle lies La Maisonnette du Coteau. Recently renovated, this exquisite cottage offers numerous luxuries, while maintaining a deep respect for it's Medieval roots.

Rest here while you experience a taste of a French countryside steeped in history and culture. Not only will you enjoy the beauty, comfort, and luxurious ammenities at La Maisonnette, but you'll also appreciate Beynac's delicious restaurants, amazing concerts, beautiful walks, stunning art galleries, and one of France's most well-preserved castles within minutes.

When you stay at La Maisonnette, you'll understand why it's one of the most photographed homes in the village, and on several of the printed postcards you'll find around town. Its prominent place atop the Cliffside village of Beynac-et-Cazenac affords its guests breathtaking views of the Dordogne River, the entire valley, and of the village. Enjoy a dinner or lunch outside on the terrace overlooking the canoes dotting the river, or take a bath in a claw foot tub while you gaze out across the Valley of the Five Chateau. Now that's what we call relaxing!

Inside the home you'll find:

* gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances including a sub-zero freezer, two refrigerator drawers, and a dishwasher; the highlight of the kitchen is the gourmet La Canche gas stove--a stove that professional cooks in Europe use throughout France

* beautifully restored wood beams in every living space

* a mix of modern and antique furnishings, including a few pieces that are hundreds of years old

* thick, perfectly restored stone walls

* unique window shapes and ornate iron work on the exterior

* romantic master suite with queen-size bed and a private bathroom, including a claw foot tub overlooking the Dordogne Valley.

* 2 additional guest rooms, one featuring another queen-size bed with both antique and modern furnishings; another with two twin beds; both are lovely and very comfortable

* Sleeps 5-6 people

* Antique tile floor on the mail level, recently refurbished hardwood floors throughout the remainder of the cottage

* Modern bathroom on the second level, including a luxurious shower cabin and a towel warmer; private views of the nearby hillside as well

* relaxing TV/movie room where a TV, DVD player and leather sofa await

* both a washer and a dryer on the premises

* gorgeous, mature, terraced gardens overlooking the Dordogne River Valley.

Let me share a little more about the glorious town of Beynac and while this is the ideal location for your vacation...whether you arrive from the East or from the West, stunning views of the town invite you as you approach this Medieval cliffside town. You will find your breath taken away as you observe the little golden buildings with their antique tile roofs nestled amongst each other as they overlook the lovely river Dordogne. Like us, you'll be shocked that such a lovely place even exists! It will feel surreal as you spend your days enjoying all the Dordogne has to offer. There will be no question in your mind as to why Beynac is listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France)

La Maisonnette is the ideal landing pad for visiting the other small, picturesque villages in the area, and for enjoying other sights as well. Make sure you visit the Marqueyssac Gardens, the Lascaux Caves (oldest art on the earth), the famed outdoor market in nearby Sarlat, the 5 chateau within 5 minutes of Beynac, and take a canoe or boat ride down the river for unexpected and amazing views. And don't forget to take a tour of the castle you'll be staying right next to (the windows of La Maisonnette look out upon the old castle walls and the old city walls as well); the Chateau of Beynac is one of the best preserved in France. You'll feel as if you stepped back to the 12th century!

About Ben Brubaker

Over the past 15 years, we've created several reasons (and sometimes excuses!) to visit France. For us, France offers the best of everything we want in a vacation--culture, art, breathtaking scenery, excellent cuisine, history, etc. When we first visited Beynac, we felt as if we stepped into some sort of fairy tale--something we'd never experienced, even in France, up till this point. The Dordogne region, more specifically Beynac, is the perfect location for any traveler wanting to experience the best of France. Renovating this historic cottage was one of the most difficult, yet most rewarding 'adventures' we've ever taken and we hope you enjoy the fruits of our labors here at La Maisonnette du Coteau.

Ben Brubaker purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Ben Brubaker chose Perigord Blanc

After falling in love with Beynac, we decided to check out a few properties in the area. Properties in this coveted Medieval village are rarely on the market and if they are, it's not for long. When we saw this little cottage nestled next to an amazing castle, we thought, 'this is our chance!' Cottages next to castles aren't exactly the norm :) We sacrificed much and put our hearts and souls into making this a vacation property you'll want to return to over and over.

What makes this cottage unique

There are many unique aspects to La Maisonnette, let me name a few: the luxury kitchen, the washer AND dryer, the stunning views, the mature gardens, air conditioning, and well-designed spaces. If you choose to stay at La Maisonnette du Coteau, this will likely be the only time in your entire life that your view from the cottage includes a majestic river, a Medieval village and most importantly, a 14th century castle. Yes, as you walk out the door of La Maisonnette, you find yourself staring directly at the old castle walls.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Ben and Stephanie,

We truly can't thank you enough for sharing your beautiful home in France with us! The beauty was almost too much to take in, we loved every. single. minute. and left feeling relaxed and thankful.

We especially want to thank you for the wonderful Orientation Guide. Oh my! We had no idea there was so much to do and see, the information was very helpful. Our favorites? Les Delices (Seriously, is there a better croissant anywhere in the world? We searched all over Paris and found nothing quite as tasty! And don't EVEN get me started on Koing Aman...mmmmm!). Jean Luc and Francoise [owners of the nearby restaurant "Le Donjon"] became fast friends (despite the fact we spoke VERY limited French), he even invited us to his kitchen for an impromtu cooking lesson! What fun memories.

We feel blessed and lucky to have experienced a little slice of heaven on earth, called Beynac. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Troy and Stacey

Magical!

  • 5 of 5

La Maisonette was a fantastic little house. All the amenities were great and it was a great location to visit all of the caves, chateaux and villages to be seen. We stayed for three weeks and were never bored. Having a castle right next door is pretty magical as were the views at any time of day. We loved the bakery, boucherie and small grocery store as back-up to the markets and supermarches within driving distance.

Ben was very helpful and the orientation guide made it all very straightforward from arrival, to things to do. The property was very clean.

We definitely recommend!

Celina and Nic,

Canada.

Six stars! Seven!

  • 5 of 5

Before I wrote this review, I looked at some of the most recent ones. They are all glowing and generally gob-smacked. So I won't repeat what has already been said numerous times. La Maisonette is the best place any of us have stayed, EVER. The area is incredibly gorgeous with tons to do. We could easily spend six months straight or just move right in and never leave. Thank you Ben and Steph for sharing your amazing cottage. Thank you Elly and Pierre for being such fabulous local hosts. Thank you Martine for cleaning the home to perfection. I am always seeking variety and new experiences and generally do not return to the same place twice. I would head back to Maisonette very happily for another stay!

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at La Maisonette for 1 week and had a fabulous time! The cottage is comfortable and well-decorated and the view of Beynac Chateau outside the front door is incredible. While walking the hill is tough, it was worth it for the view! We had breakfast every morning on the terrace as well as a couple of lunches and dinners. The location is close to many other amazing sites/villages/chateaux but you'll need a car to get to them. We visited the Saturday market in Sarlat and the Thursday market in Domme - fun! Thanks, Ben and Stephanie, for sharing your French home with us!! We want to come back.

Like a Fairytale!

  • 5 of 5

There are not enough words to describe how lovely this house is! I felt like I was in a storybook with its castle views, gorgeous backyard, and cobblestone approach. Beynac-et-Cazenac is so beautiful and friendly. We had sort of crummy & unseasonable weather and never ever felt remotely disappointed or bored!

Elly, who greeted us, was so sweet and helpful.

Ben and Stephanie have put so much time and love into the house. It is just as cozy as it looks. They provide the best tips of anywhere I've ever stayed, even including hotels. The details about the house that you receive upon arrival are useful: read them! The area tips are fantastic, I'd recommend trying as many of their suggestions as you can.

I cannot recommend this house enough. We can't wait to return in the future, it was one of the most memorable weeks of our lives!

Perfectly Situated

  • 5 of 5

There's nothing like spotting "your castle" from across the way and heading home to it, even though you only walk past the chateau and down to your magical cottage--you know, the one all the tourists stop to admire as they pass by. The tourists aren't disturbing at all; they merely make you feel like movie stars. The cottage is well-equipped (even with soaps and toilet paper, which we appreciated), and the outdoor garden spaces increased the living area of an already generously-sized home. Ben provided restaurant, shopping, and other tips, which proved infallible and invaluable. Lo Gorissado out in the country was an adventure to find, but well worth it for dinner. Le Donjon along our path to the parking lot served marvelous omelettes, including omelette aux fines herbs, and La Belle Etoile in La Roque Gageac was stellar for dinner. Luckily we had a table overlooking the river and watched three hot air balloons swoon past on their evening tour. There are innumerable must-see sites within an hour's drive, so this cottage could not be better-located. Ben was extremely responsive to all our inquiries, and Elly was always available by phone or at our store to answer inquiries. The only niggling problem for us was no AC on the floor where two bedrooms and a sitting area are located. Though we're from Texas, AC there is ubiquitous, so our bodies are accustomed on very cool air indoors, especially for sleeping. One small fan didn't quite do the trick for that whole area, at least in late June. Two of us managed, one less so. Aside from that, this could not have been a more perfect stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at the cottage and so glad you enjoyed it! A/C is about as rare as peanut butter in the Dordogne, and we are one of the only vacation rentals in the village that does have air conditioning. We splurged on it during the renovation despite the high electricity cost. (probably the reason almost no one else has air conditioning) but alas, yes we only have a unit in the master suite and on the main floor, leaving the 'kids' small bedroom and the other bedroom more dependent on fans and a cool breeze from the balcony door. Hope you were able to enjoy the rare luxury of air conditioning in this beautiful village nonetheless!

Charming and romantic fairytale cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is truly thoughtfully equipped. We cooked a number of meals at La Maisonette and the kitchen had almost everything we needed. The only thing missing were containers for leftovers. There is phone that can be used to make free calls to the States. This was much appreciated! As were the instructions on how to use appliances and Ben's detailed information about the area. There is a TV for movies only - no cable - and a number of videos including Rick Steve's France, Chocolat, and Timeline which were filmed in the area.

We didn't let the weather defeat us and we explored Beynac castle and the nearby cemetery and scenic overlook. We hiked the trail that begins right before the scenic overlook and takes you past a cave and down into the village. The hike along the river to Castelnaud was great exercise and the chateau well worth the visit. Font de Gaume, Lascaux II, La Roque St. Christophe, Jardin de Marqueyssac, Chateau Milandes are all worth seeing. Also, if you don't mind a 2 hr road trip, Rocamador is a must!

The village of Beynac itself is so lovely, I couldn't take enough photos. The boulangerie recommended by Ben is the truly the best in the area. We enjoyed walking through the village despite the steepness of the pedestrian path but be advised, the cobblestones are slippery when wet.

As others have mentioned, Elly was a huge help and speaks perfect English. We speak only a few phrases in French and were a little worried about communication prior to leaving the states. But language was never a problem. We ran into very few people who spoke no English at all. Elly purchased the parking pass for us so we did not have to navigate the Mayor's office upon arrival - I'm confident, however, that we could have managed. Everyone we met were so helpful and seemed genuinely glad that we'd chosen to spend our holiday there.
