Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday villa in Cruz Bay - Sopra Mare New Oceanfront!

2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, sleeps 4

Sopra Mare (Above The Sea) is a stunning cliff villa, built on solid native rock set atop Maria Bluff with crashing surf below. This unique home offers gated privacy yet has a one mile level walking circuit on paved roads where you may sip your morning coffee and watch iguana's cross your path. The home is continually cooled by a slight gentle breeze which generally assures no biting insects. Less than five minutes to town of Cruz Bay which offers excellent jazz at several locations on Saturday and Sunday including the famous Beach Bar - partial setting for my book about St. John 'Keep Left.' Shopping and night life abound in Cruz Bay.

Your villa is a world apart from noise and traffic; yet three minutes to the Weston Hotel, it's sandy beach and great Sunday Brunches. Enjoy the song of the tree frogs late at night and wake to the hummingbirds making a feast on Sopra Mare flowers. Ceiling fans in all rooms and full individual frosty air conditioning in each bedroom.

Suitability:
  • children welcome
  • non smoking only

Why Mike Mullen 'Mulley' chose St John

I actually got to St. John by mistake after over bidding at a charity event in Vail, Colorado about six years ago. This was the result of definitely drinking way too much wine by the time the auction began. By morning after they presented me with a bill for the event I had purchased two TV's, a shotgun, a pink Harley Davis Motorcycle and 7 nights in the Virgin Islands! But I have never been sorry about the trip and as a result it has led me on a long and winding road of adventure!

St. John is very unique, approximately 60% of the island is National Park with numerous hiking and walking trails. Old sugar plantations dot the island. The more than forty beaches are incredible, most with pure white sand. The Caribbean water is always warm and crystal clear, often you can see fifty feet down with an abundance of sea life. The people of St. John are exceptionally friendly and eager to help you enjoy your island experience.

What makes this villa unique

The home is secluded behind a private gate with zero steps to access - something nearly unheard of on St. John. Lush landscape awaits you and soon several lime and banana trees will provide a source for frosty drinks. The living room and master bedroom have a panorama twenty foot expansive view achieved by opening one set of folding doors. Complete entertainment with a 34' plasma TV, CD, DVD, IPOD system awaits your enjoyment and of course WIFI throughout. The kitchen has granite counters, stainless steel appliances and everything a chef would require to whip up a gourmet meal. Or you can dine al fresco under the stars on a Brown Jordan table and matching chairs. A stainless steel commercial radiant bbq with separate burner is steps away. As you are on the ocean its a great pleasure to occasionally see whales, dolphin and giant turtles swimming below you. Once night falls, watch the cruise ships slowly sail across your view on the way to their next foreign port. As you are facing directly south, the villa receives all day sun allowing the pool to remain at 80 degrees.

Beautiful Home Perfect Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We spent 11 days in this beautiful home on our first trip to the Virgin Islands. Sopra Mare is absolutely beautiful. Mulley certainly knows how to build them. The views from all rooms is picture perfect. The house has everything you need from beach chairs and coolers for a great day on the beach, to all the kitchen appliances to fix a great meal. We spent dinners out but also cooked a bunch on the grill and enjoyed lots of time chilling in the pool. Wi-Fi worked great so it was nice to plug into the Bose speaker and listen to music and relax on the balcony with a glass of wine. Our kids really enjoyed the home and missed nothing from home. AC at night in the bedrooms was nice, but the evening with all the doors opened and the breeze from the ocean made you really feel the Island life. Mulley was great in responding to any questions we had prior to our trip, and had some great suggestions. Reading his blog was a great way to plan a few beach days. All recommendations were fantastic. We will be back Mulley, and thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us. oh and remember KEEP LEFT!!

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I brought my 80 year old dad here for a week in April. My dad said that there was not one thing he would change about the place, and coming from him that really means something! We enjoyed all of the exceptionally wonderful beaches of St. John, but one day we just "stayed home" and enjoyed all that Sopra Mare had to offer, and it was probably the most happy and relaxed day of our trip ( all of the other days were great, too!). The views are gorgeous from this place! Everything you could need or want is provided, and the dinner waiting for us was a nice touch, since we were tired and we arrived after dark. We hope to return, and we won't bother looking for a different place when we do, as this place is perfect!

Perfect location, great layout

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been coming to St. John for 12 years and have stayed in a variety of villas in different locations on the island. But we had never stayed in a villa so close to the water or to town, and I must say we are now spoiled. The direct but gentle ocean breezes combined with the sound of the waves below make for a peaceful and serene environment where it's easy to unplug and relax. The layout of the living space was perfect for us, especially the multiple outdoor seating options (all very comfy) and the close proximity of the pool to the living area. We loved opening all those doors and windows and just letting the outside in. It was a somewhat humid week, but the breeze kept the house comfortable and we slept great at night with the AC in the bedroom. The bed was really comfortable too (I have to find out where Mulley got those pillows!). Wifi worked just fine so we could play Pandora on the Bose speaker. The beach chairs and coolers provided were of the highest quality we've seen in any St. John rental thus far. We spent several days just hanging out at the villa sipping rum punches and reading. My husband could hang out in the shaded breakfast nook while I caught some rays in the pool, and we were still close enough to share music or a conversation. The new plantings from December are coming in nicely behind the pool area, adding privacy for those clothing-optional swims. When we did manage to leave the villa, it was a short 5 minute drive to town. Enjoyed a fabulous day sail on Kekoa, ribs at Driftwood David's, and dinner at the Terrace. Logged some quality beach time at Francis and Salomon. The week flew by as always, but we felt at home and completely relaxed from the moment we arrived. A bit of food/wine in the fridge as a welcome is a nice touch. Manager Jared and owner Mulley take great care of their visitors. Would not hesitate to recommend Sopra Mare and we hope to be back soon. Thank you for another magical vacation in St. John!

Addictive!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 5th stay at Sopra Mare and each year it gets better and better. The villa is so perfect you are tempted not to leave for the beaches - truly! It's private, quiet and comfortable! The kitchen is outfitted with everything you need, the outdoor grill fabulous - and the serenity perfect. We spent two weeks at Sopre Mare and could have stayed longer. Mullen provides you with everything you need and some things you didn't know you needed - but use! The new manager came over on Easter Sunday to check on a pipe - which he fixed - and could not have been more helpful. We have been traveling to St. John for over 20years and this is the best villa on the island if you want to just get away and relax!! Already booked for 2017.

Sopra Mare = Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Our 7th visit to St. John and our first stay at Sopra Mare was a highly anticipated trip and Sopra Mare did not disappoint. Mike and Colleen were fantastic to work with from start to finish, making our planning and arrival a breeze. St. John is a wonderfully beautiful island, with breathtaking beaches and eclectic shops and folks to match. We have always rented villas for our visits and Sopra Mare has quickly moved to the top of the A-rated list. The villa is beautiful, wonderfully maintained and the views are picturesque to say the least. There are a couple of things I’d like to mention that set Sopra Mare above the rest. Number one, the driveway. You might think this insignificant, but trust me, some of the driveways on the island are not for the faint of heart. Sopra Mare provides and easy in, easy out flat driveway (relatively unheard of on the island) that makes for a comfortable arrival/departure, day or night. Number 2, the pool! This was our very first rental that we actually used the pool. Most villas have one, but they are ice cold this time of year. Not Sopra Mare. The water temps were 84 degrees our entire stay and it was magnificent. To come in from a day at the beaches and have the opportunity to float, relax and gaze at the sunset was an absolute highlight. And an added bonus, the fancy in pool lighting made night swimming an experience.

I have already begun throwing coins into our St. John jar for our 2016 visit and Sopra Mare will definitely be our final Caribbean destination from here on out.

Thank you Mike!!

Great Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I arrived in St. John, exhausted after a long day of travel including plane, taxi, ferry and rental car. It was wonderful to find a dinner waiting for us. The house was perfect. Just a beautiful spot overlooking the ocean. So conveniently located, only minutes to town. We spent each day exploring the island, going to different beaches (snorkeling with the turtles, rays and fish of every color shape and size). Skinny Legs for a late lunch one afternoon, happy hour in town the next. Eat in or dine out, it was all so wonderful and relaxing. Mike and Colleen were fantastic and so responsive to our questions.
