Disappointing apartment experience

  • 2 of 5

We arrived at the address of the apartment (no 2) that we had booked, very tired after a much delayed journey from UK. We were told by the people in the building to go to no 8, a few doors along the road, and there we met Maryla. Maryla showed us in and around, but it was soon obvious to us that this was not the apartment we had booked. Instead of 2 double beds we had one double bed, one single bed, and a double sofa bed, on the floor. Also, although the apartment was generally well equipped, the floor plan was very different to our expectations, being smaller.

We were not in any position to discuss this at that time. The next morning, first thing, Maryla came to see us, apologising for us not having the apartment we had booked, because of a problem with the plumbing that made the apartment uninhabitable. She gave us some financial compensation. I have no way of knowing whether this was an appropriate amount, but we had no realistic alternative to accepting it. I questioned why there were people in No 2 if there were problems with the plumbing, and Maryla explained that the problem did not extend to the apartment those people were staying in, which was on a separate floor. There was no washing machine, so Maryla gave us vouchers to use at the local launderette.

Maryla said that this was the first time this sort of thing had ever happened to her, and was extremely apologetic. Accepting that, the fact remains that our apartment was less comfortable than we had expected, and that did diminish the enjoyment of our stay in NYC. Although the sofa bed was actually quite comfortable to sleep on, I have a chronic back problem, and the process of getting up and down on the floor to sleep was not what I had expected.

All in all, we all made the best of a bad job, but I doubt we will use HomeAway again.

Owner's Response: While I can completely understand the frustration our guests experienced, I am thankful our guests made evident - by the review - that I did everything possible in my power to accommodate them under extremely unfortunate and surprising circumstances well beyond my control. Indeed, there was a major plumbing issue in that particular apartment that suddenly arose and that required dismantling the commode, wall tiles and floor of the bathroom to repair. The work took two days to complete. Though I extended financial compensation, provided laundry vouchers to laundromat 2 minutes from the apartment, and accommodated in all aspects possible, I am particularly grateful that I was able to offer an alternative apartment and not add calamity to the inconvenience. As a long time host on Home Away, this review stands as anomalous to the 94 excellent reviews I have enjoyed here. And so, would encourage the guests to continue using Home Away for their travels as the platform is replete with hosts like me, who delight and pride themselves in providing utmost hospitality.

Beautiful apartment!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with 3 friends for a long weekend. The apartment is beautifully maintained and was very clean. Its bright and pleasant, on a quiet street, and very walkable to Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Mccarren Park, etc. Maryla was very responsive and helpful.

Great base for exploring Brooklyn and Manhattan

  • 4 of 5

Lovely, quiet, safe neighbourhood. The apartment was very clean and well equipped for our needs. The beds were comfortable, and the crockery, linen and towels were good quality. There was plenty of hot water and a good shower.

It was close to a number of subway stops and the trendy Bedford & Nassau Avenue areas were great for interesting shops, restaurants and bars.

Maryla was there to welcome us on arrival with tips and advice on what to do and where to go. A trip on the East River ferry is a cheap and enjoyable way to see the Manhattan skyline as was the view from the pier and transmitter park (just down from the ferry).

There were a couple of downsides to the stay such as, the internet access being very slow and the sofa was quite uncomfortable, particularly after a full day of walking the streets! While we didn't use the oven it was only on the last night that we realised that it didn't work, this wasn't an issue for us but it could be for others who want to cook.

Any downsides to the apartment are far outweighed by the benefits and I would recommend this as an ideal base from which to explore the area.

Owner's Response: Hello, Tracy, Thank you so much for your kind review and noting your concerns. We always appreciate the feedback. With regard to the internet, they have been upgrading the area to fiber-optic, so some delay was experienced during your stay. Pardon. The oven does indeed work. I apologize for not alerting you that the tape we place on the oven knob is only there for safety as I prefer to review how to properly use with our guests. The sofa is from Design Within Reach; perhaps design has trumped comfort. We will look into alternatives. Sincerely, Maryla
