Relaxing vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Preston's Thicket was wonderful! The cabin had everything we could possibly need. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. We enjoyed petting the farm animals. Our dogs also had a great time. We didn't want to leave.

Perfect location, relaxing getaway & so much more!

  • 5 of 5

I highly recommend staying at Preston’s Thicket! Our family of 5 had such a wonderful time that I do not even know where to begin. Prior to our arrival, Cheryl (the owner) was so quick to answer any questions I had (and I had many). The process was so easy and she included so many wonderful details in the information packet she sends when processing the rental.

The beds were some of the most comfortable I have slept in away from home, there was plenty of space, many toys, games, books and other things to do indoors. We had fresh eggs from the chickens when we arrived and any kitchen appliance you might need to make a meal. It was clean and orderly and there was the most generous welcome basket awaiting us on our arrival.

We spent most of our time outside feeding the ducks, fishing, talking to Pedro (the donkey) and watching the baby sheep run around. We roasted marshmallows at the fire pit and let the kids explore and climb trees.

The location was perfectly accessible. There was a creek to wade around in (complete with a swimming hole and rope swing…had it been warmer) and a gem mine right across the street. The kids had a blast mining and we felt like it was an excellent deal for what we took home. The lake is also very easy to get to (5-10 min depending on where you want to go) as well as downtown Chimney Rock (maybe 15 min?). We have stayed many other places around Lake Lure but this was definitely our favorite. We will be returning for sure!

Owner's Response: Part of the experience of staying in a country setting is having the room to stretch out and explore nature at your own pace. I remember this particular family because the kids wanted to help with the farm chores. They helped me collect eggs, and when it was time to feed the sheep and donkey, they were eager to dish up feed and pellet, and stuff hay nets. They really enjoyed the experience of caring for animals that reward us over and over again with their peaceful existence and antics in the pasture! We encourage anyone that wants to experience the peaceful country setting to try our accommodations. We don't ask you to do farm chores, but we do encourage interaction with our petting zoo and will allow age appropriate chores for your kids as they express interest. While the lake and all the fun that Chimney Rock and Lake Lure offer are just down the road, it's nice to be able to just come "home" and relax and breathe...isn't that what vacations are all about?

A beautiful place in the country

  • 5 of 5

Too much to tell everyone! House-charming and roomy. Everything you would need or want for cooking or relaxation was there. I loved the chickens, ducks, donkey, and sheep. Just to sit on the large screen porch with my coffee in the morning and listen to the birds was heavenly. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone! Perfect for a couple on a honeymoon-or perfect for families with children-or for two couples spending time together and drinking a glass of wine on the porch while cooking out!

Love this cottage

  • 5 of 5

The home was so nice. Wonderful owner. Very sweet. Absolutely loved the decor not to mention it had everything you could ever imagine. Cottage had a beautiful poarch where we enjoyed breakfast. It was overlooking the pond and ducks and the sweet animals. I just loved the area. It was great for a weekend getaway. Can't wait to come back with my family for a summer vacation.

Owner's Response: The Family Cabin is an ideal place for families and friends to gather--and the front porch which seats a dozen people, is the perfect place to remember why you came to this countryside retreat in the mountains in the first place....there is something so serene about watching sheep in the pasture, chickens scratching for bugs and ducks gliding gracefully in the pond to create lasting memories of a relaxing stay!

Family trip

  • 5 of 5

Pros: location : 5 min to lake Lure, zipline, kayaking, 10 min to Chimney Rock

house : kitchen is fully stocked unlike the most rental houses that have bare

minimum. house is full of antiques, kinda like a museum. very impressive. all appliances

work well. never had any problems. lots of extras like free shampoo, laundry detergent,

welcome basket etc. we always had to bring things like that with us . in this case you can

bring nothing , everything is provided.

returning guests get a 15% discount

Cons: cleaning fee is a bit high in my opinion. more than we usually pay when we rent. we used all 4

bedrooms and paid $150 for the cleaning.

We had a wonderful time and there is a good chance we'll be back.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to write this review! We like to give a little something extra, "l'agniappe" as it is called in Louisiana, for our guests. The Welcome Basket and all the extras are just our way of saying thank you for choosing our cabin over all the other choices that are closer than 5 min to Lake Lure. The housekeeping fee is based on number of bedrooms: we charge a flat $50 for the house, and then $25 for each bedroom needed, to make it more fair for smaller parties. I use a third-party cleaning service that sanitizes the house in between guests to ensure each guest arrives to s a freshly cleaned house with bathrooms, kitchen and floors that have been sanitized. Some guests feel if they leave the cabin as they found it, that there is no housekeeping needed and request they not pay the full housekeeping. We expect that you will leave the cabin as you found it, and when housekeeping has to put toys back in place, game pieces and puzzle pieces back in boxes, chairs from the porch back in the house, cigarette butts left in containers around the property emptied and cleaned and magazines and reading literature put back in place before any cleaning can actually be done to the cabin, we have had to charge guests a small percentage of their deposit based on the amount of time it took to rearrange the house back to its original arrival condition. One more note on the cleaning fee: we have an honor system with the cleaning fee. We provide an envelope and a card with the amount expected to be paid and we ask that you pay this the day you leave. Unfortunately, we have had some guests leave without paying this fee. When the housekeeping crew arrives, and no money is left, I get a call which means I have to drive 110 miles round trip to meet up with the housekeeper to pay so she can pay her crew. I have to recoup this money by deducting it from funds held for the damage deposit. Thankfully, in over 200 guests, we have only had to do this less than a dozen times. I am in a network of other vacation homeowners and $150 for a 4-bedroom, 2000 sq. foot home is standard. I hope this fee does not deter you from booking with us again. We remember you as great guests who left the cabin in perfect order and made it very easy for the housekeepers to begin mopping and cleaning and we thank you for that! We also have a rating system for our guests and you got 5 stars from us so we hope you will return!

Family Time

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived at the Cabin my family loved it. We had my sons 1st birthday party there and my mother got to see all of her kids in one place in over 10 years. The view was beautiful and the ducks were friendly all of the children were feeding them out of there hands. We had a great time and we will be booking another trip there.
