About the property

Treat yourself to a romantic getaway, personal retreat or creative sabbatical in your own private storybook cottage nestled in a 5-acre forest in Woodstock, the famous “colony of the arts” and cultural hub of the Catskills! This historic Woodstock hand-built house was the home of the legendary film director, Preston Sturges ~ as well as many other well-known artists and musicians. It features a spacious great room with a cathedral ceiling, 2-story north-light windows, a massive stone fireplace (open during the winter only), and 2 sets of French doors that open onto a blue stone patio overlooking a fern glade and deep pine forest. Stretch out on the queen bed with a pillow-top mattress and luxury linens in the quaint bedroom with cottage-style casement windows. Fall asleep to the sound of crickets, and wake up to birdsong! Climb an open stairway to a private writer’s office, as well as a loft space with a foldout futon couch and balcony overlooking the great room. There’s a second writer’s office on the first floor, with an arched Palladian window and forest views. Prepare snacks and meals in your well-equipped country kitchen, and serve them at the farm table next to a wall of glass, or on the patio surrounded by gardens. Cozy up to a fire in the stone fireplace in the winter, and watch the snow settle on the branches outside and transform the woods into a magical wonderland. This charming cottage in an idyllic setting is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or creative retreat. Make the Sturges’ cottage your home for a weekend, week, month or season, and let it inspire and uplift you throughout the year!

Our stay was wonderful. The property is managed by incredibly polite, knowledgeable, and proactive folks. Our expectations were exceeded in every way. We spent a magical winter's month enjoying quiet solitude, wine by the fireplace, and convenient access to skiing, hiking, and area attractions.

The Perfect Getaway!

The Woodstock cottage exceeded my expectations on all counts. The cottage was comfortable, cozy, and meticulously clean. Nestled deep in the woods, the setting provides total privacy yet is only minutes from all that Woodstock has to offer. There was even a gym literally at the end of the road.

Property Managers Judy, Jill, and Patricia were the most professional team I've ever worked with on a rental and I cannot speak highly enough about them. Top notch, every step of the process.

I'll most definitely be returning - without a doubt!

This is indeed a magical property, with a lovely historic home on beautiful grounds. All amenities were perfect and the house is well managed. Communication is easy and can't think of a more lovely place to spend time in the countryside. Hope to be back.

Cozy, Quaint, Quiet.

Perfect get away from the hustle & bustle of urban life. Quiet, clean, delightfully charming. You couldn't ask for more, if you're searching for a place away from it all, but with downtown Woodstock a 2 minute drive away. Highly recommended if you're searching for peace & quiet, and a downtown bustling with art & artists.

The cottage is even more beautiful than i imagined it to be!!!! Really like it is plugged out of a dream. Light, full of history with a lot of character, clean, beautiful surrounded gardens and a lot of nooks to explore!

Me and my husband had an amazing 4 nights and if we are traveling back to the area in the future (which i hope) we would definitely rent this amazing place again!

Perfect Labor Day Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing weekend at the cottage. It's tucked away in the woods, but so close to the village. If you're looking for a home with lots of charm and character, this is the place! We enjoyed walking through the village, shopping and the restaurants. Tinker Taco Lab is a cool little joint, and it's right by Peace, Love and Cupcakes which we visited more than once! Stopped at Woodstock Meats and got some nice steaks to grill back at the cottage. There's a grocery store and wine and spirits shop within minutes which was very convenient. Everything went smoothly from booking to arrival and checkout. We had the perfect relaxing weekend we were hoping for!
