About Tom and Peggy O'Malley

Talk about local history with the current owners, Peggy and Tom O'Malley, who were both born in Atascadero. Tom grew up next door in a house built by his father in the 1940's. Tom's first job was working in the 'Colony Orchard' at the historic home right next door. The main house was built for Harry and Minnie Peterson in 1927 by Russell Pysher, the brother-in-law of Minnie Peterson. He was also the head carpenter at the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena for most of his career. Harry was one of the first businessmen in Atascadero and Minnie was a local artist. Some of her work is now on display at this home along with paintings of local scenes painted by Tom's grandmother, mother and other local artists. Ironwork in the living room and dining room was created by Edward Trinkeller, a craftsman who worked on Hearst Castle. Peggy and Tom continue the tradition of using local craftsmen to faithfully restore, maintain and expand their home. For example, local artist Mark Greenaway created the many wayfinding signs in use around the property.

Why Tom and Peggy O'Malley chose Atascadero

We bought this property as our family home in 1995 because of its beautiful location and interesting local and personal history. We love living in Atascadero as well as being close to so many great places to explore: To the north we have; Hearst Castle - 45 min., Cambria/Cayucos - 35 min., Morro Bay - 20 min., Paso Robles - 10 min., Historic Templeton - 5 min. To the south we have; San Luis Obispo/Cal Poly - 20 min., Avila & Pismo Beaches - 30 min., Los Olivos, Buelton,Solvang - 1 hour & 15 min. We are also located about 1/2 hour from several lakes: Nacimiento, San Antonio, Santa Margarita, and Lopez. Because of our interest in California History we are pleased to be close to three of the original California Missions; San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, San Miguel de Archangel, and San Antonio de Padua.

What makes this cottage unique

Enjoy a peaceful hilltop with abundant wildlife. It is especially relaxing to watch the quail, deer, and squirrels.

If you would like to have a family picnic or BBQ ask us about reserving a picnic or BBQ area at no extra cost.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Tom and Peggy,

Thanks! The property is just beautiful. It was perfect for our stay and Cal Poly graduation celebration. Tom, thanks for the extra efforts to see that all the little things were available to us. The coffee was most welcomed.

We enjoyed our stay as did our guests.

Thanks again,

Nancy and Denis

Quiet guest house with adjacent yard. Great for smal dog(s)

  • 5 of 5

Nice retreat from busy motels/hotels. It was perfect location and size for are two small shelties with private grass area. Nice short trails to take dogs for a walk.

Private and far enough away from the main inn. Cozy and comfortable, great "direct tv" connection with two large flat screens, one in bedroom & one in living room. Kitchen area with nice size table for eating. Atascadero down the country road, Paso Robles(10miles away)& scenic Morro bay not that far. Great location for wine tasting. If you stay for any long vacation time there is a washer & dryer for your convience. Interior is modest but I would imagine it is easier that way to keep clean and accommodate for dog people. We totally appreciated the fact we could bring are dogs along for a brief get away. All in all very satisfied!

A relaxing setting on a beautiful property.

  • 5 of 5

Tom is quick to respond to any questions or needs. We had trouble with the wifi, but didn't really need it. Very convenient access for our visits to our CalPoly student. The cottage is comfortable and the grounds are charming. Thank you Tom and Peggy

Lovely, clean cottage in quiet and convenient location.

Enjoyed our stay. Convenient location (if driving 15-20 minutes isn't a problem) to beach, horseback riding and great wineries.

Beautiful setting!

  • 4 of 5

This is a beautiful and private setting. It is very comfortable for a couple. There are beds for 5 people, but only comfortable accommodations for 2. The couch bed and single are not conducive to a comfortable night. Tom and Peggy are lovely and the grounds are a treasure!

Quiet, peaceful retreat

  • 4 of 5

It was a beautiful property with lovely landscaping. Nice place, quiet, with a lot of trees and birds. I recommend it for anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

You can sit on the patio for hours and enjoy the ambiance, or drive to Morrow Bay in 20 minutes where it's 20 degrees cooler. It was hot the weekend we visited, but Tom and Peggy did everything they could to accommodate us. They are a lovely couple. Would definitely come back again...
