This is one of three apartments in an old home so please understand that this is not a good choice for loud late night partying. If you would like to check out the other two apartments, they are Baby Dux (studio) and Papa Dux (one bedroom).
Laura: I take care of The 3DUX and our guests on behalf of my cousin, Inga Frick. Inga grew up in the house with her mother and grandparents. Her grandfather was know to the extended family as Papa Duck. The DUX are named in his honor.
Laura Wildman purchased this house in 1993
Inga: Our family were renters in the house for 40 years before we were able to buy it in 1993. My grandfather ran a washing machine repair business in the house. Our grandfather was 'Papa Duck' to all the children in the family. Thus The 3 DUX!
A beautiful home in a convenient location run by good people.
Papa Dux combines an ideal location and great facilities with a beautiful mountain backdrop. We stayed for 3 weeks and enjoyed being able to walk everywhere. It is just 2 blocks to the shops and restaurants of State Street or a 3 block walk to the Wharf or the bars, wine tasting rooms and art galleries of the Funk Zone. The deck is perfect for early coffee or later cocktails but the joy is to watch the constant play of the sun and clouds on the mountain backdrop. Loved it!
My husband and I are in our 60's, so were a little worried by one October review of Mama Dux. While this may not be the place for a wheelchair, I've had knee surgery and am far from agile, but I had no problems whatsoever with getting around this gorgeous open place. The steps are few and gentle, I love the walk-in shower, and the seating was easy and luxurious. I'm a poor sleeper and am pretty fussy about beds, but I slept like a log in that wonderful bed. There were others staying while we were there (we saw their car in the evenings), but we never heard them, even at night when I'm most likely to hear even the quietest of sounds. And because it's so close to everything, we strolled to all kinds of shops, restaurants and even the beach. Laura called us as soon as we arrived and was very attentive, but honestly, the place had everything we needed. so we didn't have to call her. All in all, a uniquely beautiful place and a wonderful experience. We'll definitely be back--as soon as we can.
Perfect place for a home away from home. Much more space and amenities than a hotel. Great location. We walked eveywhere. Nice kitchen with all the items needed to prepare and cook a meal. We watched 3 seasons of Sherlock, at night on the wonderfule TV in the bedroom and in the day on the living space TV. Very nice setup.
Super location, very comfortable and quiet. No problems at all! Would definitely stay there again!
This is a very difficult review to write. We've stayed in many VRBO properties over the years with wonderful experiences. We selected this particular property because of its location and the many positive reviews on the website. The pictures looked fantastic. Our apartment was one of three in this craftsman home. It describes the apartment as "classy and luxurious" and could be. The apartment description states that it is accessible to the elderly/infirmed. Not the case. I use a cane to get around. There were a few steep stairs leading up to the entrance. For anyone in a wheelchair, it would be very difficult. The large seating in the living room made it difficult getting around and are not comfortable for adults. However, I believe the biggest problem was the uneven floor in the kitchen (wood and tile). There is at least a 1 inch drop between them. We needed to be constantly aware of this difference in elevation as we walked around the kitchen or to access back restroom. You need to negotiate via a 2 ft path in front of refrigerator to pass through. I tripped twice. We found the lighting throughout inadequate. The king bed is about 1-1/2 feet from the floor, thus it was difficult getting on/off the bed. The mattress was uncomfortable and should be replaced with a better one or a different bed altogether. The other renters (or renter) were noisey. On our first night they didn't stop until after 1 AM. The walls here are very thin and we could hear their conversations. The description stated that "consciege service was onsite" but we saw no evidence of this. Although there was minimum information available online, it would have been appreciated if there was more information in the apartment. Lastly, we recognize that owners/managers provide different services, but there was no welcoming note, nor snacks upon arriving. The last place we stayed provided fresh croisssants, homemade jam, yogurt, coffee, and eggs for three days. Yes, a little over the top, and we know that not everyone does that. However, we usually receive some form of hospitality, other than water/coffee. Usually a Journal is available for us to write about our experience. None provided here. We made the best of our time because we make our own fun, and it is always nice to visit Santa Barbara and discover new and wonderful restaurants.
Cozy, very usable. Everything you would need for your stay from one night to two weeks.

We have been lucky to have wonderful guests and happily anticipate adding you to that family.
Once you are booked we will send a detailed confirmation email that you should look over carefully. Your reply constitutes our agreement. There are only two major things that I ask: That you understand that you are renting one of three apartments in a house and that this is a poor choice for loud partying. Reasonable consideration keeps it a peaceful refuge for everyone. The other rule is a strong one: absolutely no smoking in the house! Smoking outside is fine as long as it’s considerate of other guests who might be annoyed by the smoke and if nearby windows or doors (where smoke might drift into the interior) are shut. There is a $1000 charge for detectable cigarette smoke.
Cancellation policy: If cancellation should become necessary we do extra advertising and work on filling the reservation until the reservation dates are past and every effort has been made at recovery. We will refund whatever we are able to recover. We make every effort and so charge $50, whatever the outcome. The earlier you let us know, of course, the better the chances are of making full recovery.
Dogs are considered on a case by case basis. You should communicate with me regarding your dog. After a couple of disasters we are no longer taking large or shaggy dogs (however lovable or well behaved) and we are particularly careful in the shedding season (spring and summer) Sorry!
Mutual consideration works!
THANK YOU ! :) Inga and Laura (and the rest of the family)
