Turtleback Lodge is a unique cabin in a unique location. Being surrounded on three sides by water gives guests a view of the lake from every single window in the cabin!. Enjoy relaxing, playing in the water, taking a lazy paddleboat ride into the quiet cove or taking your boat out for any water sport you like. There is nothing to match the beauty of the sunsets over the lake- who says Key West has a corner on sunsets?? Having coffee in the early morning in the gazebo while the mist on the lake burns away, fish jump, birds of all sorts take flight.... heaven!! A fire pit placed out by the lake allows relaxing with the ones you love while grilling hot dogs or roasting marshmallows while an awesome show of stars twinkle overhead. Stay on site and enjoy endless fishing, swimming, paddleboating, sunbathing, grilling and relaxing. Ending the day soaking in the hot tub on the front porch is sure to be the doctor's order for a good night's sleep!
Or venture out and enjoy year round golf with several courses nearby, local dining and other activities such as tennis, bowling, mini-golf, paintball, and biking. Visit some of the many local cultural activities such as the Greenwood Arts Council, Community Theatre and Museum. Be sure to check for seasonal festivals and celebrations. Drive a little farther... an hour to an hour and a half or so...and find mountain trails, waterfalls, parks, concerts, and dining and shopping to suit almost any taste and desire.
Bring along your furry friend and let him ride in the paddle boat, swim in the cool waters or curl up under the swing on the porch. Your best friend is sure to be fascinated by the jumping fish, the cranes as they lazily take flight or just new places to sniff and run. Let tension go as you relax on the swinging bed in the cozy bedroom corner of the porch as the ceiling fan lulls you into dream land, relaxing to the sounds of frogs and crickets and the water lapping at the shore. As one guest commented about the swinging bed: 'it's like being on a cruise because all you can see is water'!
Sleeping quarters include two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a queen bed, twin daybeds in the den and the twin size swinging bed in the bedroom corner of the enclosed porch. Each bed is made up, fresh and inviting with linens and towels supplied for your needs. Although there is sleeping space for 7 people, we definitely do NOT recommend trying to use the swinging bed on the porch as your place to sleep during the heat of the summer.
Our full kitchen has all the extras we could think of, including a blender, coffee maker, crock pot, deep fryer and all sorts of drink glasses! For cool mornings you can knock off the chill by firing up the gas log heater in the kitchen.
If you haven't been to TBL in a while there are a few additions.... a diving board on the floating dock has been a favorite. A gas fish fryer and a picnic table in the BBQ house have made eating out there more fun and we are just finishing up in the kitchen (March 2013) with some needed updates: new cabinets, counter tops, dishwasher, stove and sink. We maintain the character of the cabin with every change we make but do all we can to have modern convinces and a few 'extras' when possible.
Because Turtleback Lodge is a hand built log cabin, built in the late 40's and early 50's with hand hewn logs, we are very aware of the need for some special precautions and care. We are firm in the **** NO SMOKING **** provision and ask that you understand that this simply is not the rental for you if you enjoy smoking. Please understand that smoking is not allowed anywhere on the property. You are responsible for any friends you invite to visit when you are a guest at TBL. We want to be up front about this so there are no 'surprises' for people when they find the information in the contract.
The fact that we are on a peninsula means we have over 1000 feet of shore line for fishing and exploring. We also have a boat ramp on site.
We supply information at the cabin so you have directions and driving distances for stores, restaurants, and also a place to rent a boat or jet skis close to the cabin, where to buy bait, a fishing license or go see a movie. We do all we can to make sure our guests have their needs met and beyond. The feedback we get helps us plan for improvements and new ways to make Turtleback Lodge a place our guests want to return to over and over again.
We have by no means a large cabin- our bedrooms and the bathroom are small- but we are happy to provide a unique, special place, unlike any other on the lake. A recent entry in our journal in the cabin for guests' comments : 'We rent many places through VRBO and yours is the best!' .If there is any information you need please feel free to email or call during the business hours listed below.

We inherited the cabin from Mart's parents and love every inch of it, making improvements whenever possible so that the cabin offers everything needed to make it the perfect place to relax or play. We live about ten miles from the cabin so we are able to be available to guests if there are any questions or needs. The wonderful comments and feedback from our guests have made us feel that others see all the love put into the cabin through the years. Mart is a full time farmer and Beverlee is a retired RN. Married for 44 years (YIKES! We don't even feel THAT old!!), we have celebrated more family occasions and events at the cabin than we can count, so it holds a huge place in our hearts.
Mart and Beverlee Simmons purchased this cabin in 1985
Turtleback Lodge was built on land bought by Mart's father when the lake was being built! If we were in the market for a get-away on Lake Greenwood we feel there could not possibly be a more perfect location. Having water on three sides gives us privacy, security, access to the 'big water' and the quiet and SO much more. It is a unigue peninsula and a unique cabin and we feel blessed to own it. When you are sitting in the hot tub or lying on the swinging bed, the views of water all around give the feel of being in the middle of the ocean! We have the ability to close off the outside world and completely relax. Being back in civilization with a short drive just adds to the overall convenience, whether there for a weekend or two weeks!
Turtleback Trail is a private drive and, at the very end of the seven- tenths of a mile road, Turtleback Lodge. With well over 1000 feet of shore line, the cabin sits out on the peninsula facing the ‘big water’ and having the quiet mouth of the cove at the back. A stay at the cabin can be as active or as tranquil as desired. With a private boat ramp there is no driving off site to get your boat into the water. Year round you are able to dock under the covered floating boat dock, built with a wide side to allow sun bathing and relaxing, with a ladder at the end for swimmers. The cabin is child friendly as well as having extremely easy access for our guests who may find it difficult to climb stairs. There are no steps into the cabin and the walk from the cabin to the dock with the gazebo is short and only a slight incline. We have had friends who have physical limitations find the in and out stairs at the main swimming area also easy to use. For years Christmas trees have gone to a new home on the bottom of Lake Greenwood, around our floating dock. These weighted trees have formed great places for fish to hang out just waiting for you to wet a line. There is nothing better than a mess of fish cooked fresh at the lake- yum! The cabin is close enough to civilization to run out for pizza or to the store for supplies. But close enough to nature that you must drive slowly down the drive at night because deer are out in numbers, along with red foxes and rabbits and all sorts of four legged creatures.
We had a family getaway for 3 days (Me, wife, brother & his wife, another brother, and our mother) Jan. 06 - Jan. 9th 2017. We could not have chosen a more relaxing, and scenic cabin to spend time together. We had SNOW!!! and it was amazing!!! Sitting in front of a warm, crackling fireplace sipping on a cup of hot coco while laughing and talking about memories....that's what I call "good times". We are looking forward to coming back while it's warm so my son and I can fish, and ride the paddle boat! Thank you to the owners for sharing this beautiful, and historic piece of heaven and being so helpful with quick emails and making our getaway perfect!
My family of four (2 adults and 2 older teens) really enjoyed our winter vacation at Turtleback Lodge! Communications and arrangements with Beverlee were fast, smooth and detailed - we felt very comfortable with the directions and check-in/out procedures. We are "lake people" and have spent many summer vacations on lakes in northern Maine, the Poconos, Ontario and western Maryland. This cabin is fantastic - really great lake - fishing - nautical themes. Our 15 year old son slept on the "swinging bed" in the enclosed porch and loved it. We all got a kick of the fishing decorations especially the bobbers used on the pull string to turn lights on and off! The kitchen was well stocked. We cooked one meal in the smoke house as well (worked well for us since it was raining). The view from the property is unbelievable. Big cove view to the left where the dock/pier is located, full big water lake views to the front and right - being out on the peninsula gives great perspective. The lake is centrally located to easy access to highways to make day trips (we went to Greenville and Charleston). Greenwood is only about 20 minutes away to get supplies/groceries or to go to the movies, restaurants, etc. Unfortunately for us we dealt with a LOT of rain during our week but we made the best of it - sitting in the hot tub looking out on the lake while it was raining was very relaxing. Due to the rain the lake got a little muddy and despite of our best efforts the fish were not biting. All the reason to come back in the future!
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. THIS IS THE FIRST VACATION MY HUSBAND AND I HAD IN EIGHTEEN YEARS. BEVERLEE WAS ON TOP OF EVERY EMAIL OR PHONE CALL PRIOR TO OUR TRIP. THE CABIN WAS EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN. THE FIREPLACE WAS SPECTACULAR. THE GAZEBO WAS AMAZING. ENJOYED EVERY INCH OF THIS LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN .MY HUSBAND AND I FISHED THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND NIGHT'S WE SPENT THERE. WE CAUGHT CATFISH. THE VIEWS WERE NEVERENDING; WE LOVED THE DECOR SO MUCH, I TRULY HATED TO LEAVE. MAY I ADD ALL THE LINENS AND TOWELS SMELLED SO CLEAN I HAVE TO EMAIL BEVERLEE ASKING HER THE BRAND SHE USES. ( MAY HAVE BEEN THE DETERGENT THAT WAS IN THE CABIN, BUT I CANNOT REMEMBER THE BRAND) WE WILL DEFINITELY BE RETURNING. THANK YOU BEVERLEE AND MART. WE LOVED YOUR CABIN.
My family (including myself, my husband, four year old twins and three dogs) just returned from a trip to Turtleback Lodge. I can honestly say this was the best week of my life. The cabin was immaculate upon our arrival and contained everything we could possibly need or want. Our goal for the week was to relax and spend time together and the cabin was the perfect place to do so. We ate every meal at the gazebo on the water or in the beautiful and well-equipped grill house. Our days were spent swimming, collecting shells on the beach, kayaking (we brought our own), playing games on the large lawn, and fishing. Our dogs had a fantastic time swimming and sunning themselves on the expansive lawn. My husband was able to catch a cooler full of channel catfish (caught on chicken livers) as well as some white perch and white bass to bring home. Every night brought a stunning sunset view to be enjoyed from the hammock. After night fishing, we made smores in the fire pit and then relaxed on the iconic enclosed front porch on the porch swing and in the hot tub.
It rained for a couple of hours one days. We played records and danced by the gorgeous fireplace and then played a board game (both are available at the house).
We only ventured out twice. The first trip was to the farmers market in Greenwood, where we tried scaupernaugths (sp?) for the first time and tried South Carolina Peaches. The second was to venture to the childrens musuem in Greenville. It was great for my 4 year olds and seemed to accomodate a fairly wide age range from infants to early teens. Greenville is clean, filled with restaurants and adorable shops to walk through as well a beautiful park in the middle of the city.
I truly cannot say enough good things about Turtleback lodge. If you would like to speak with me about my time here, feel free to contact the owners and they can pass on my information.
I would reccomend Turtleback Lodge to anyone looking to relax, reconnect with family and friends. Thank you so much for sharing this treasure Beverlee and Mart!
Perfect, absolutely perfect! We stayed to get some much needed rest, and the cabin was the perfect choice. We were not able to do any fishing, much to cold with the Artic Front that passed through our area. Sitting in the sunroom looking at the lake, or watching tv with a big fire going in the beautiful fireplace was just what we needed.
Everything that has been said in all the other reviews is true. The cabin is very unique, and I really liked being able to read some of the history for the family. There was nothing that I could possibly have needed in the kitchen, everything has been provided. Beverlee even made sure her sister-in-law replaced a coffee pot the day we arrived. So sweet :] Mart and Beverlee have really made every effort to make sure your stay will be pleasant and comfortable. Beverlee was kind enough to make sure we stayed warm when the temperature dropped in the single digits.
Mart and Beverlee are top notch owners with great communication. This cabin will truly make for a wonderful stay....as close to being at home that I have ever found.
We are definitely coming back to enjoy some fishing!
This lake cabin is a family charmer set in the middle of a perfect peninsula that allows swimming, fishing, boating, outside yard games and grilling/BBQ'ing, etc. The yard is well manicured that allows for perfect bocce ball, corn hole, crochet, etc and is slightly sloped so is perfect for wheelchair bound individuals, cane users and the elderly for which we had 1 of each on our vacation. There's a perfect gazebo for fishing off of or just relaxing with a cocktail or cup of coffee. BBQ house with nice gas grill, characoal grill and a fish fryer. Didn't get to use fish fryer because only caught small ones and threw them back, lol, but was nice and relaxing trying for the big catch. Got to say though, did catch a huge catfish that got away :D . Loved the cabin that was filled with "boat and fishing" memomabilia that you would find/see something new everyday. It gave a nice loving family atmosphere. We rented a pontoon boat for 2 days while there from Waters Edge, Beverlee and Mart's recommendation, and had a blast. Oh, and it was perfect to finally find a place that was "pet friendly". My daughter and son-in-laws 2 pit bull girls really enjoyed their stay and it was nice not to have to "board" them during our vacation which we don't like to do, or to find family to watch them for a week.
I must say to Beverlee and Mart, you were very acommodating and quick to respond to any questions we had AND for the best compliment I could give is a remark/compliment my husband gave to me. For a little background info first, I usually internet surf and find the "family vacation spot" for our trips and this is the first time I can remember he came up to me during our vacation at Turtleback Lodge and said, "You did a good job". :)
The area is rich with golf- ask for the list and web sites-, shopping, farmer's market for spring and summer produce, Newberry Opera House shows and performers, community theater, regional festivals and activities. A drive of an hour or an hour and a half will get you to mountain trails, waterfalls, large venue shows, shopping of all kinds, restaurants of every sort and much more. As much as there is to do in the area we have had guests tell us that their plans changed after arriving because that they wanted to stay on site, relaxing, refreshing and becoming 'lake people'. What better compliment than having guests tell us that the little cabin at the end of Turtleback Trail was where they wanted to be? Nice!

Obviously the rates listed here are NOT accurate. This new option has caused confusion and inaccuracies in how we price and our rates. There are special deductions for increased length of stays that are not possible to put into a self-booking chart. I was not able to have this removed and go back to how we have listed for years but will be happy to explain our pricing if you will email us. Thanks!
Payment is requested by check(s): a week is allowed to mail the contract and deposit to us; 1/2 of the total fees are required 60 days prior to arrival and the remaining half is due by 14 days before the arrival date.
