About the property

Lovely Country Cottage, with open fire, wi-fi, central heating & tennis court.

Welcome to Garden Cottage. The cottage is right in the heart of our country estate in Fife, about 9 miles from St Andrews and its many golf courses. The Estate comprises about 200 acres of arable land, and although close to Cupar and St Andrews, it is a wonderfully peaceful and tranquil place.

The cottage is stone built, and set in its own garden, with a lawn to the front, grass to the back, with woodlands at the side. It is sits on a private road, which is only used by cottage guests, and the very occasional tractor working on the estate. It is probably about 2 hundred years old, and has lots of character and traditional charm. It was originally the cottage for the Head Gardener on the Estate, though it has been tastefully renovated, and upgraded since his day.

Downstairs the cottage has a spacious sitting room, with an open fire, flat screen TV, with free-sat channels, a DVD player and a selection of books, DVDs and games. We supply a starter pack of coal, and unlimited logs for the fire, so that you can enjoy the pleasure of a real fire. There is also a full dining room, well equipped kitchen with hob, oven, microwave, washing machine, fridge, freezer and dishwasher, as well as a separate larder. There is also a downstairs toilet with basin.

The cottage has central heating, and free wi-fi throughout.

Upstairs, there is a bathroom which has a lovely showerbath, with fixed screen and power shower, toilet and basin, as well as 2 bedrooms - one with a double bed, the other with 2 twin beds. The beds are handmade by a local craftsman, from our own timber, and are made up with comfy toppers and cosy duvets. There is also a full size cot, and we are happy to supply bed linen and towels for your baby.

Outside the garden is stocked with flowers and herbs. The woodland and adjacent stream are often visited by deer, especially in the early morning, and as the kitchen overlooks the woods, you might be lucky enough to see a deer while you make your morning tea. In front of the cottage, in an open grassy area, is our duck pond, which has many wild ducks. In the spring, there are many ducklings, swimming in line behind their mothers. We are regularly visited by Harry the Heron, and very occasionally, by otters.

In May, we host the Fife Agricultural Show in some of our fields. This year is is held on Saturday 20th May. It is far enough away from the cottage that you will hardly notice it, but if you want to visit, there are lots of things to see and do, with show jumping, cattle, sheep and horse shows, as well as all sorts of traditional Scottish exhibitions and displays.

On the Estate, about 100 yards from the cottage, is our tennis court, and guests are welcome to use it by arrangement. If you don't have room in your luggage to bring rackets, just let us know, and we'll provide some.

Further afield, there is so much to see and explore in Fife. The Open Golf comes to St Andrews regularly, and is next here in July 2021, and in 2018 it comes to Carnoustie, which is roughly an hour from the cottage. And of course, it would be wrong not to mention the many and varied golf courses in the area. It wouldn’t be difficult to spend a couple of weeks, choosing a different course each day.

The cottage is about 9 miles from St Andrews, and so is perfect for golfers, or for visitors to the University. St Andrews itself has much to see, from St Rules Tower, the Castle and the other historic areas.

On the Fife Coast, there are the pretty East Neuk villages, such as Anstruther, and Pittenweem, and the Pittenweem Art Festival is not to be missed. The beach and forest at Tentsmuir is well worth a visit. Even in high summer the long white beaches are clean and quiet, and seals can often be seen basking in the sun ( the sun does actually shine quite a lot in Scotland - contrary to common belief!!).

Edinburgh is only an hour away by train or car, with the Edinburgh Festival in August, and so many sights and shops to see and visit.

Fife is in fact just the prefect place from which to explore all that the East of Scotland has to offer.

Regrettably no dogs.

It really is our pleasure to welcome you to Garden Cottage, and we will do our best to make your stay in Fife a happy memorable one. We look forward to hearing from you!

About Margo Addison-Scott

We are Chris and Margo Addison-Scott, and we live at Kinloss House, which is the mansion house on the estate. Chris' family have lived here for over 120 years, and we moved back here in 1998 to take over running the estate and the houses on it. We live here with two of our three children Jamie and Ben,(our daughter Alex has already flown the nest and works in London) and a selection of animals, including our 2 Shetland ponies, Fun & Perseus, our cat, Smudge, dogs Rosie, Bella and Liily, about 12 hens, 8 guinea fowl and a goldfish. I am now the Estate gardener, and I hope to make the gardens as colourful and interesting as possible. Emma is our housekeeper, and she helps me get the cottage ready for you. We are both very proud of the cottage, and really hope you will love it too.We are delighted to welcome guests to this quiet corner of Fife in Scotland, where there is so much to see and do.

Margo Addison-Scott purchased this cottage in 1887

Why Margo Addison-Scott chose Fife & St Andrews

We took over running the Addison-Scott family Estate in 1998, and since then have had much pleasure in improving the various cottages and houses on the estate. The Addison-Scott family bought this property after many years in the army, navy and working abroad. One of Chris's ancestors sailed on the Victory, Nelson's flagship, and we love exploring the history of the family, and their exploits.

What makes this cottage unique

We think that Garden Cottage is a delightful place to spend a holiday, to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside, where the only things you will hear is birdsong, and the very occasional passing tractor. Depending on the time of year, so much happens, from the Fife Show in May, Harvest time in August/September and Scottish Christmas and New Year. Although quite close to Cupar, the estate is a little haven of peace and tranquility. The cottage itself is several hundreds of years old, and was originally built for the Estate Head Gardener. It still has the original sloping ceilings, and thick stone walls, though I think it is probably a lot more comfortable now than when he lived there, with the modern comforts of plumbing and heating!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Margo - Thank you so much for lending us your wonderful cottage at Kinloss Farms. I may have explained that we were trying a new sort of vacation for us…one focused on “living like locals” rather then time focused on touristy activities such as sight seeing. While we did some exploring and sight seeing - we mostly just enjoyed being in Fife and Cupar and at the cottage.

I’m happy to report our experiment was a success! The cottage was so easy to stay in and we came to love it’s little quirks. It was cozy, comfortable, and a great place to host occasional guests (can kids be considered guests?). We got to know local businesses like Ostler’s Close (Jimmy and Amanda are great), Luvians (I think we went in there too often…) and Fisher & Donaldson’s. We played many fun rounds of local golf - staying clear of the “big courses” and concentrating on the smaller local options such as Elmwood and Scotscraig. We even got where we could pretty well navigate through Fife without a map or GPS!

We came to really like the Kingaroch Inn and ate there several times. We also went to Falkland four times - once to tour and three time to eat. What a lovely village!

And the joy of living for four weeks on your delightful farm. We all agreed we slept extremely well due to the pleasant quiet of the surroundings. We liked watching the different groups of chickens cross our front yard every day - they each had their ritual we could see. We loved the guinea fowl and their ridiculous, squawks when riled up about something. And your cows - well, we loved them. We did manage to coax them to the gate one evening and my kids got to experience them close-up.

I’m thinking: meat pies from the butcher in Ceres, donuts at Gregg’s or F&D, scotch at Luvians, golf at Elmwood, dinner at Ostler’s or the Kingaroch Inn. Just so wonderful. I haven’t even mentioned The Open which was the best golfing event I’ve ever attended - and I’ve been to all the majors and plenty of others.

Thanks so much. We loved the cottage (and your beautiful, super-friendly pups) and would enjoy a return some day!

Everything you would want a country cottage to be

  • 5 of 5

The place is even more beautiful than the pictures show; comfortable, warm and quiet, we looked forward to getting back 'home' at the end of each day.

When we arrived, a lady and a young girl greeted us as they rode by slowly on their horses before making their way up the hill behind the cottage. A pair of pheasants were frequent visitors throughout our stay, and a deer walked calmly across the lawn. In this bucolic setting, between the farmsteading and the manor house, only the plastic play set on the side of the lawn took away from the illusion that Heathcliff or Mr. Darcy may be stopping by soon.

Our days were spent visiting various abbeys, castles and cathedrals, and at night we found great restaurants in St Andrews and nearby towns (the Tavern at Strathkinness was particularly good). If you enjoy pastries and pies, make sure you visit Fisher and Donaldson's in either Cupar or St Andrews, you won't regret it.

Thank you, Margo, for making the cottage available to us. We would love to find an excuse to come back.

Beautiful Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay while in Cupar. Cottage was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. Very inviting as Margo left candies and fresh baked bread and in fridge left butter and milk along with bottled water. Beds were very comfortable. Not too far from Edinburgh or St. Andrews. Both towns were very pretty. Loved the countryside. Thank you for everything. Hope to go again! The Caison's &The Carters North Carolina

What we had hoped for....

  • 4 of 5

The setting of this property is taken from a story book. You are immediately charmed by the location and the country/farm surroundings and important to us....the quiet! Outside of some lack of understanding about the heat and a visit from a local owl, we found the property to be exactly as advertised with the pictures reflecting accurately what we found upon our arrival. The owner was attentive to our every request and even though out of area, was able to send individuals to answer our questions. We did not arrive until the evening and the welcoming bread, jam and service for tea was most appreciated as we settled in. If you are looking for hustle and continual excitement, this is not the place for you. If you want to have a quiet respite, still within quick access to St. Andrews, golf and all it has to offer, this is the place. Thank you for letting us share your cottage.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking time to write a review Bob. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay - despite the unexpected visit from the baby owl down the chimney. That's the first time that has happened. Perhaps just as well the real fire wasn't co-operating. Always happy to increase the central heating times as required.Welcome back anytime. Margo

Golfing trip to St. Andrews

  • 5 of 5

My wife, two sons and myself spent 5 nights at the cottage and enjoyed it very much. It is about a fifteen minute drive to St. Andrews. It was very nice to have all the comforts of home to go to each night. We really enjoyed being out in the country, watching the chickens, guineas, and even pheasants walk thru the yard. Margo was very helpful answering all my questions prior to arrival and also having fresh bread, fruit and snacks on our arrival. Cuper is a nice town to explore with several restaurants nearby. I would highly recommend this property and will probably return on another trip.

Owner's Response: Hi Rod. Thanks for the review and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Re the British Open Golf, this is unfortunately the first year that the R&A sold the television rights to Sky, so it wasn't available on the cottage TV. Sky do have streaming services which would have been available on your laptop. I chuckled when I read that you thought I was quite accommodating. I hope actually that I am more than that, as I responded to so many of your emails, and tried to help with your plans and other accommodation. Something I clearly have to work on!😀😀

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was as described on the site. It was in a peaceful and tranquil place. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. The fresh flowers were really appreciated. The owners were helpful prior to and during our stay. It was in a great location to enjoy the Fife country side. We spent most of our time in St Andrews for our sons graduation. The drive there was easy and not too long. We did several walks and runs as described in the book on walks in the cottage. The longest being the walk from Crail to st andrews, along the coast.

We got fish and chips from the local place in town one evening and also ate at The Grange Inn, just outside st andrews. Great food and very friendly people. Beautiful location on a hill just above St Andrews. We also enjoyed a meal outside at The jigger inn, right next to the 17 on the old course. Lovely views from here. We booked everywhere we ate in St andrews in advance. It was a busy week there. The only downside to our trip was the exit from Europe vote! We even ended up in a bar with Boris Johnson in St Andrews!
