Two Bedroom Balinese Style Villa With Lush Gardens and Breathtaking Views
Delightfully relaxing Balinese-inspired villa with three separate pavilions (living, master bedroom, and guest bedroom) custom-designed to enjoy inside/outside living in your private oasis of sun, lush gardens, hummingbirds, butterflies, toucans, and sparkling pool waters. Nestled high on a peaceful hilltop, the panoramic views are fantastic: to the northeast, the Atenas Valley with Póas, Barva and Irazú volcanoes in the background, to the southwest the Rio Grande Valley and to the east, the Central Valley. Ideally located in a gated eco-residential community, a thirty-minute drive from San Jose airport, this exquisitely crafted three-pavilion tropical hideaway is close to everything Costa Rica has to offer. Invite family and friends to enjoy the spacious pool and spa, lounge on the terrace with a good book, or surf the WiFi from the hammock.
Location: 26 miles northwest of San Jose; 15 miles west of the international airport and 43 miles northeast of Jaco Weather: Warm during the day; mild at night. The dry season runs from December through mid May. A stroll through the immaculate, palm-lined central park or lunch at one of the many typical small cafes serving local food in town awaits visitors to Atenas. Located on the Central Valley’s western edge, Atenas is a slice of quintessential small town Costa Rican life. With just 5,000 inhabitants (17,000 including the suburbs), Atenas is famous for having one of the best climates in the world, according to National Geographic. The words “El Mejor Clima del Mundo” are emblazoned on every Atenas bus; a valid claim as daily temperatures hover around 80 degrees and dip into the 60s at night. Temperatures: Daily averages 77 to 86 °F. Evenings vary from 62-70 °F. Altitude: 2600 feet above sea level.

About Joe Rees
Hello! We're Nancy and Joe Rees... and we love Costa Rica. We recently built a beautiful house in Atenas. We're looking forward to retiring here, but until then we would love to share our peaceful retreat with you. Thanks for considering our house.
Joe Rees purchased this Villa in 2008
Why Joe Rees chose Atenas
We built our home in central Costa Rica, near a small town called Atenas, for easy access to the international airport, wonderful climate, traditional Costa Rican culture, and its' strategic location, the perfect spot for exploring all the wonders Costa Rica has to offer.
What makes this Villa unique
We enjoy swimming in the pool, day trips to the beach, local restaurants, soaking in the outdoor jacuzzi, yoga, zip lining, napping in the hammock, hiking, bird watching, the local farmer's market, white water rafting ...and much, much, more.

The lovliest place you could ever imagine....
My husband and I have traveled quite a bit over the years, but because we wanted to do something really special for our 25th wedding anniversary, we chose this villa for a 17-day stay. We could not have made a better choice! Once we decided that this was where we wanted to be, (we did a LOT of searching on VRBO!), Joe was incredibly accommodating with his prompt replies to our inquiries. Arrangements were finalized in only a matter of days. After months of anticipation, we found the home and surroundings to be even more beautiful than the pictures conveyed. Never have we experienced accommodations that so perfectly blend the indoors with the outdoors to create an atmosphere that truly renews the spirit.
Atenas was a great pivotal point to be situated and is within close proximity to the airport which we appreciated because several family members and friends joined us at different times throughout our stay. We traveled north to Arenal where we went on several excellent tours (canoeing, ziplining, hiking and biking) and drove to the Pacific Coast several times to enjoy the beaches some of which were great for swimming and others for shelling and exploring tide pools. Atenas has a number of excellent authentic restaurants and everyone we encountered was extremely friendly despite our very limited knowledge of Spanish. Though we didn’t see him often, we really enjoyed Elias (the caretaker) who was ever pleasant and always willing to help us with whatever we needed.
The pool, hot tub and rocking chairs on the porch were favorite spots to spend our time; we enjoyed cooking our own meals in the gourmet kitchen (following trips to the Friday Farmer’s Market), eating dinner on the porch while overlooking the city lights, sleeping in the exceptionally comfortable beds, trying to find the chattering gekos, listening to the birds (and the most beautiful wind chime ever!), and marveling at the breathtaking views from every window! Everything on the property is laid out so well (the pavilions, the pool and hot tub, the gazebo); the landscaping, lighting and Indonesian decor all provide for an incredibly relaxing and peaceful environment, and the amenities accommodate every need you could possibly think of. Joe and Nancy haven’t missed a beat in designing a retreat that restores the soul! We know you will love it!
Worth Every Penny!
We recently spent the last four days of a two week vacation at this beautiful home. My brother said it all shortly after we arrived: "This must be how movie stars vacation!".
The house had spectacular views of the mountains, and we were able to watch both the sunrises and the sunsets from the extensive patios. The pool and hottub were both very clean and perfectly situated with gorgeous landscaping nearby. The pool was a good size, which surprised me as mini pools seem to be common in Costa Rica.
We felt very safe at this house, and appreciated having Elias available to help us out if we had any questions or needed anything.
We had planned on a couple of excursions while in Atenas, but cancelled them as we didn't want to miss a day of hanging out at home! We did however make it to Zoo Ave, which was about a half hour drive from the house. It was very reasonably priced ($15 per adult) and we saw all sorts of animals that we probably would never spot in the wild. If you go, save room for some treats at the end...they have a wonderful assortment of pastries near the exit!
We also made it to the Atenas market Friday morning, where we were able to buy all sorts of fresh vegetables and cheese. Unlike other markets we visited during our vacation, the prices were all posted. This was a great advantage to us as we had been charged what we call the 'gringo price' instead of the 'tico price' elsewhere. We were able to buy anything else we needed at two nearby grocery stores.
The house is a perfect layout for socializing while in the main house, but also allows for people to escape to their own quarters. The kitchen is an entertainer's dream, with a large island where people can sit and talk to the cook.
It seems like a lot of thought has gone into accomodating visitors, such as excellent speakers with an aux jack for mp3 players, a wide variety of reading material and a collection of brochures and menus from nearby attractions and restaurants.
When we were first considering renting this property, we were a bit concerned about the distance to the coast. However, the luxuriousness of this property makes the hour drive well worth it, and the half hour drive to the airport is a godsend if you have an early morning flight out. It is also in a very central location if you plan to visit Arenal Volcano and also go south towards Manuel Antonio Park.
Thanks Joe and Nancy for making this such an inviting and breathtaking retreat!
Thanks Julie.... It was lovely to have you as a guest... Please come back when you can.
Lush property, our oasis during our stay. Beat our expectations. Highly recommend.
The pictures and the description of the property are exactly as promoted. It felt like a Five Star Resort. Elias, the caretaker, was very helpful and attentive. Please look in the guest book for recommended restaurants nearby and activities. What a relaxing vacation it was. We can’t wait to come back.
Easiest Home to Give a 5 Star Review.....Ever!!
An incredible property. So comfortable and relaxing. Indoor / outdoor living at its best! Our family enjoyed 9 days at the Villa Tamarindo. Located on the highest point of the Pica Flora neighborhood, this is a large and beautiful property to rent if staying in the Atenas area. Amazing views from every patio & balcony. Perfectly designed and very-well maintained. Centrally located for day trips to many popular locations such as Manuel Antonio, Jacó, Monteverde, Arenal, and San José. Our favorite was Arenal :)
For us, the highlight was the pool. It is huge! One end is about 6 feet deep and the other end has steps to gently enter. Our disabled daughter enjoys splashing, but cannot swim, and she loved the step in area. Elias had the pool perfectly maintained upon arrival. Prior guests left some pool floats (thank you!) The kids could have easily spent our entire stay in the water. At night, the pool and ambiance lighting are exceptional. Pool towels were provided. Two very comfortable hammocks are also on-site as well as a variety of outdoor and patio furniture. There are several outdoor patio's and balconies, each unique, where you can relax and take in the view.
The three living pavilions are perfect. Each has multiple sliding doors for easy indoor/outdoor access. The doors can also be easily locked and secured for privacy or safety with young children. Temperatures approached 90 degrees during our stay and each pavilion was entirely comfortable without AC.
We enjoyed animal and bird watching! From cattle and horses on the surrounding hillsides to a variety of birds flying tree to tree, to the iguanas living on the roof, our binoculars were kept in use. There is also a lovely patio above the garage that provides a spectacular view. While in Manuel Antonio National Park, a group of people were huddled together taking pictures of an Iguana. We thought to ourselves, "we have 5 of those in the tree & on the roof outside our kitchen!"
If you choose to rent this property, plan plenty of time to spend at the home. You will regret it otherwise! Joe was excellent in providing any information requested. The property was easy to find using the Waze app. We also enjoyed Atenas--the grocery store, the plaza, restaurants, etc. We definitely want to return!
A wonderful villa!
This villa was recommended by friends and it was above and beyond our expectations. The beauty of the villa and surrounding countryside took our breath away! The separate sleeping buildings provided privacy and the main building was great for entertaining with a spacious kitchen and living area. The architectural design and interior decorating were outstanding. The pool and hot tub added extra beauty. The sitting areas and views from all directions were amazing as was the landscaping. Elias is gracious and very accommodating. We have stayed in many villas, and this one was by far, the best. In one word - PERFECT!
Heaven is a place on earth
To say you have relaxed without having been to Villa Tamarindo might as well be the biggest white lie I have ever heard. I booked Villa Tamarindo for my 30th birthday, I was accompanied by three of my dearest friends. When we arrived we stole the last of the afternoon sun, over excited and perhaps too eager we proceeded to inflate all 5 pool floaties in one sitting. (Sidetone: we have left the pool floats for your future enjoyment, - please take care of the rainbows for us)
Over the years I have baptized my body into several different pools but one thing is for sure, I will forever remember the first time the sweet salt water of Villa Tamarindo pool water caressed my cold translucent east coast winter skin.
It was the hug I didn’t know I needed. The the aqua-blue blue of the pool water reassured me that everything was going to be okay. The pool gave me permission to relax. And that is what I needed. Villa Tamarindo encourages your wildest relaxing dreams and then makes them come true. If eating a coconut popsicle for breakfast is your thing: Villa Tamarindo. If waking up in a hammock is something you have always wanted to do: Villa Tamarindo. If you want the stress of the world to melt away: Villa Tamarindo.
In the end, I will always think go my life in two ways. Before Villa Tamarindo and After Villa Tamarindo.
