Rancho Loco is perfect for your desert hideaway home away from home. Come rain or shine, Rancho Loco has something beautiful to offer. When it's sunny, drinks by the pool, quiet time on the veranda with a book, watching the sun rise or set and enjoying some good barbecue with friends and family. When it's stormy – get cozy on the couch with a fire crackling away, a home cooked meal with a glass of wine while you watch the clouds roll in over the dramatic landscape, framed by the huge picture windows. Rancho Loco also affords extra privacy with separate living quarters, the cozy & bright main house and the open & airy studio.
Located on its own secluded 20 acres, minutes from Joshua Tree National Park, Rancho Loco offers 360º views with over 50 Joshua trees, yuccas and native desert foliage all on the property. Situated between the two houses is a salt water swimming pool with an observation deck, perfect for sunset viewing, outdoor dining, and maybe even a skinny dip under the stars. Rancho Loco is a rustic modern take of a 1920s ranch house updated to today's standards including solar power as its primary source of energy and water drawn from a private on-site well!
Rancho Loco is a great affordable base no matter what your interests are – rock-climbing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, model rocket launching [our fave], novel writing or just relaxing by the pool. So please do not hesitate to contact us if you want to get away and visit this magical California vacation home location.
We, Karen and Marcus, have lived in Los Angeles since 1990 and take great joy and pride in making things better.
Marcus Wright purchased this house in 2001
We purchased this property after many years of traveling to Joshua Tree as a get-away. It became our home away from home with the space, privacy and solitude that was hard to come by in Los Angeles. The idea of a two hour car drive putting you in a different world creates an invaluable peace of mind.
More than just a base for exploring Joshua Tree National Park and the surrounding area, Rancho Loco is a self-contained resort. It provides all the comforts of home in a spectacular setting. Unlike many vacation homes in Joshua Tree, Rancho Loco provides a year round experience due to the salt water pool, which provides the remarkable sensation of cool blue water beneath the hot summer sun and the limitless night skies.
I am completely enchanted with this home and with Joshua Tree. The home is beautifully situated on 20 acres of desert property, a nice distance from the main road. As a result, you can sit on any one of the numerous decks encompassing the home and feel like you are alone in the desert. The sunset and sunrises are breathtaking. While the day was warm, the cool pool provided a refreshing reprieve. The evenings and night were perfect, calm and peaceful.
The home itself is like a work of art. The pictures don’t do it justice. The colors of the walls, the bright blue of the swimming pool, and the landscaped yard blend and contrast perfectly with the surrounding desert landscape. In the evenings, the Christmas lights and the music gently blaring from the home’s built-in speakers on the patio create the most pleasant atmosphere. The home has a fire pit perfect for making s’mores and barbeque, in addition to a gas grill by the pool.
The inside of the home and guesthouse are also aesthetically pleasing, not to mention super-comfortable and clean. We stayed at the property with another family (4 adults, 3 children total), and we were all very comfortable. The separate homes provide just enough privacy. The kitchen is nicely stocked with handy appliances, dishes, utensils, etc.
The location is also great. It’s close to Joshua Tree National Park. It’s also close to local supermarkets, so that you can just buy your food there instead of having to cram coolers and bags of food in your car for the trip.
The owners are also very helpful and friendly. They provide clear, concise directions for most everything.
This was my first stay in the desert, and we had just visited the Sierras and the Rockies. I didn’t think the desert landscape would compare to the lush green of those mountains. After my weekend here, the desert is now my favorite landscape. I highly recommend staying here!
Rancho Loco is an amazing oasis in the desert! My family of three went with another family of four over a long weekend and had such a great time here. It’s not too far from Los Angeles where we live, just a little further than Palm Springs. First off, it’s located a few minutes north of the town of Joshua Tree. We brought a cooler of food, but if you need anything there's a Walmart and other grocery options about 13 mins away on the 62. There’s also some small shops and restaurants (Crossroads Cafe yum!), and the National Park entrance is right around the corner. (The National Park is definitely not to be missed if you visit—just bring lots of water!) Back to the Rancho Loco—The property is very large and very private as the nearest neighbor is far off in the distance. The main house has the kitchen (stove/oven, small microwave, regular sized fridge, coffeemaker, etc), and large open family room which includes dining area with a big table that would seat at least 10-12. The rest of the family room is quite a comfortable place to hang out and talk, play games, etc. There’s lots of windows and lots of light coming in, and you can enjoy the beautiful desert and and mountain views. There’s a main bedroom which we didn’t stay in but had two beds (a queen and a futon) and a bathroom. Across the side is the guest house, which looks like a converted small barn. There’s a loft with a queen bed, and downstairs a picnic table, living area and single sofa beds. There’s a door which takes you to the laundry room and bathroom. There’s a small refrigerator in there too. It must be said that both houses on the property are both utilitarian and neatly designed. You can tell the owners have put a lot of love into this place. Swamp coolers and fans did a fine cooling job in both houses in 100 degree heat. Everybody was very comfortable. In between the houses is the pool area. They have a salt water pool which is so refreshing. There’s a nice seating area under shade too, and you can put music on the stereo system in the main house and listen outside, which was a really nice touch. There’s also a grill you can use. Then you realize as you watch the sun setting behind the purple mountains, with a beer in the hand, friends and family on your side, that Rancho Loco is a special place, and you wish the weekend wouldn’t end.
I would rent this property again in a minute. It is such a wonderful property. So quiet, only the sounds of nature. We didn't hear a single car. That is such a treat. The swimming pool is perfect for cooling off and big enough to swim laps. We cooked all our meals in the fully stocked kitchen. The stargazing is truly wonderful here. The Milky Way is so clear and visible. We sat for hours each night and just watched the sky. We truly enjoyed our time here. We look forward to staying again.
I came to Rancho Loco with 6 friends for a weekend retreat. The photos of the listing didn't do it justice and the house was actually better than advertised. The property is very private and secluded. The pool was a great amenity to have in the very hot mid-july conditions. The house was well stocked with everything we needed, fully equipped kitchen, coffee maker, bbq grill washer, dryer and dish washer. The instructions regarding the usage of the house and amenities were very clear and concise. The christmas lights and sound system out in the pool area were a nice added touch that made the whole experience more enjoyable. Overall we were all very happy with the rental and our experience there. Marcus and Richard were very prompt in answering any questions and generally made the whole experience very smooth and easy. I would definitely recommend the rental to a friend. Maybe one suggestion would be adding a page worth of information regarding some local grocery stores, restaurants cafe's or activities. Might be helpful to out of towners who are unfamiliar with the area.
I have rented this property once last year. Returned again with my partner & a friend. We had a great stay house has everything you can think of ;) we know some friends in the high desert in Yucca that came by for some chicken on the grill and a dip in the pool. Was great another friend of ours has a shop in town where we saw a great art exhibit . Was great to go visit and be able to return to our sweet cozy home & the fact that our friend had there own quarters to relax in. Was wonderful will def rent again. I highly recommend this beauty.

We are so happy to have found this property and we can't wait to come and stay again. The set up was perfect for two families with two kids each, plenty of living space and sleeping space within the main house, and the casita. The whole décor and set up is low key, comfortable, tastefully done with beautiful planting and fencing around the property. There were so many places I wanted to sit in peace and look at the mountains, or desert, and Joshua trees, and sunset, but our time was mostly spent around the pool, playing with the very happy kids and pool toys supplied. The place is solar-powered, which is brilliant, of course it should be in the desert! This is probably why water pressure in the shower in lower than we are used to, and water not quite as hot, but this was a minor observation. The kitchen was well equipped and we are outside for all our meals, under the metal arbor. Neighbors are visible at a long distance, not interfering with the sense of isolation at all, and the network of indistinguishable tracks heightened this impression. Easy to get lost without satnav. Marcus, the owner, was super easy to contact on a couple of things, and kindly let us return to the house after check out when we had a minor car accident and needed to wait for a tow-truck (if you head to the Giant Boulder, word of caution, make sure you aren't driving a low urban vehicle, hybrid SUV at least...)
Year round Joshua Tree activities and festivals, Big Bear is an hour away for skiing and lake activities, Palm Springs and Palm Desert communities, airport, shopping, and aerial tram within one hour drive, Las Vegas is just under 4 hours away for gambling and whatever else floats your boat, Los Angeles is just over a two hour drive.
