Large apartment in historic mansion in city neighborhood. Hot tub and parking!

Bedrooms 4
Space 1,800 sq ft
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

About the property

4 bed / 2 bath, spacious, quiet, private.

Welcome to the Shuey House, a national historic home located in Seattle’s vibrant urban neighborhood known as the "University District". We are ideally located on a quiet residential street, just a short walk to grocery stores, cafes, theaters, and a fabulous Saturday farmer’s market.

Our spacious, 1800 sq. ft apartment is the entire lower level of the Shuey House mansion (which is 7,000 sq. ft). It has a private separate entrance with 2 parking spots just steps from your front door. Each of the 4 bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with large windows, a queen bed or two twins that can be made into a king, and soft Egyptian cotton bedding.

The well equipped kitchen has a gas range, refrigerator with ice, dishwasher, microwave, and everything you need for meal preparations. The dining room table seats 6, and the living room has a comfortable large sofa for watching the big flat screen TV or just relaxing.

Though the apartment is in the basement, it has tall double insulated ceilings, lots of windows and natural light, radiant heated floors for winter, but is nice and cool in the summer.

Outside there is a private patio just for you, with a table/umbrella and chairs, and a gas bar-b-que. Just through another gate is a shared hot tub (with the owners), available during certain hours.

Note: Our own family lives upstairs, and we do not rent to other guests.

The Shuey House is a in a great, convenient location for most major tourist attractions, with easy access to Downtown, Pike Place Market, Seattle Center, Greenlake, and the University of Washington. We are also close to Children’s Hospital, Fred Hutch, Amazon, and other Seattle institutions for those traveling on business. Downtown is easily accessible by public transportation and Light Rail brings you straight from the airport to the University of Washington.

* Please note, there are steps to get down to the front door of the apartment, so it may not be suitable for those that cannot negotiate stairs.

About Rebecca Schellings

Hello. We are the Schellings. Steve (dad) is an executive director in pharmaceuticals, and Rebecca (mom) is an interior designer. We have three teenage sons (one at college, two at home), and Steve’s mom, “Oma”, also lives with us. We are a fun, outgoing family that loves to travel, meet new people and see new places, spend time with friends and entertain guests.

Rebecca Schellings purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Rebecca Schellings chose University District

We’ve always loved old homes, and in the spring of 2000, we stumbled upon this house. It was a beautiful, turn of the century neo-classical grand home, in a great neighborhood, but was in need of some attention. We spent the next 2 years restoring it back to its original grandeur, while also bringing it into the 21st century. We placed it on the National Registry of Historic Homes (Henry Owen Shuey House).

What makes this apartment unique

Besides being a wonderful, unique house, it’s also a great location. The University Park neighborhood is central to everything, with an urban vibe, yet quiet off the main streets. Our tree-lined street called “Professor Row” has a great mix of young families, academia, and students. One block to the West, is “The Ave” (University Way), an eclectic street of funky shops, restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, and theaters. Several blocks to the East, we have the “University Village”, Seattle’s swanky upscale shopping center with lovely boutiques, outdoor cafes, and Seattle’s best ice cream shop (Molly Moon’s). And if you need to get away from all the activity, walk to the end of our street where you will find a beautiful wooded park with trails and a stream that will make you forget you are in the city!

Great place

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful place for us to stay. There were 6 of us attending the 2018 National Special Olympics Games. We had 4 athletes participating and staying in the UW dorms. A lot of events were at the UW and the apartment is close to that area. The owners left a book with all kinds of information including places to eat. We tried several of those and they were great. There are plenty of pots and pans if you want to cook. There is a large coffee maker or a Kuerig if you prefer that. The only down side is the stairs that lead down to the apartment, but we managed those. There are plenty of windows and it is very light. The owners were out of town while we were there, but were available by email or phone. We highly recommend the apartment. It was the perfect place for us.

Beautiful home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I stayed here for four nights to tour college campuses and were joined by my sister and her family from Oregon. This apartment has everything you will need - we traveled from CT. It was very clean and had plenty of room for the six of us. Rebecca was extremely helpful as this was our first time to Seattle and very responsive to all emails. I would highly recommend staying here!!

Comfortable clean and convenient.

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for our stop over in Seattle. There were 7 of us, and we were quite comfortable. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds are comfy. The kitchen was well equipped, and the full-sized washer and dryer in the apartment came in handy. The location is great. Easy access by bus or light rail to downtown. The neighborhood has plenty of places to walk, shop, and eat. The private deck with barbecue was really nice. And having two offstreet parking spots was a real bonus— especially in the city! We will definitely stay here again next time we come through Seattle.

The Shuey House lived up to our expectations. It was very easy to communicate with the owners.

  • 5 of 5

The Shuey House was as advertised with 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths and had a complete kitchen. We loved our stay and it allowed our family and a few friends to stay in Seattle together. We utilized both of the parking places but never used our cars during our stay. We walked, and used public transit and Uber to get everywhere. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and would not hesitate to stay at the Shuey House again.

Shuey house

  • 5 of 5

The location of the Shuey house was perfect for our stay. We were in close proximity to the University of Washington and the Link station so we had quick access to every where. The space was perfect for our group and the different families sharing the rooms. The back porch space was perfect for coffee and bbq'ing. We would have like the water filter and ice to work on the fridge, but it was only a minor inconvenience.
