Cozy country house at the Walfjord

Bedrooms 2
Space 548 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

Living by the sea, fantastic view & good excursion starting point, 2 bedrooms

This cozy 51 square meter country house for 2-3 people is located on the south coast of picturesque Hvalfjörður (Walfjord) and only 45 minutes from the capital Reykjavik. "Villa Künstlerblick" is the direct neighbor of our "Villa Fjordblick".

This slightly smaller country house is located just a few meters from the shores of the fjord in front of a beautiful backdrop of mountains and sea. A large sheltered veranda makes it possible to enjoy the magnificent view outside in good weather.

The apartment is divided into a cozy and lovingly furnished open plan living and dining area with integrated kitchenette, two bedrooms and a small bathroom with shower. This house is ideal for two to three guests.

The kitchen is well equipped with dishwasher, many household appliances and dishes, so that cooking is fun even on vacation. You have the opportunity to use the washing machine and dryer together with the neighboring house "Villa Fjordblick" free of charge. These are located in a separate technical room at the "Villa Fjordblick".

Our tip:

Since the two houses are only a few steps away from each other, two families traveling together can spend their holidays here. Discover the surroundings on joint excursions and round off the day with a barbecue in a big group. In this case, also note our following actions:

Get-a-way Dream

  • 5 of 5

Domenik was in contact with us from the second we booked. The owner sent us great literature that told us of all the great activities and sights for us to see. Domenik helped with everything including booking a safe car. The cabin is as beautiful as the pictures. There was enough hot water for 3 of us to shower with no issues. The place was clean. The view is breath-taking. I cannot say enough about how serreal the location is. I felt as if I was in a movie. Beautiful country, and this is the perfect place to soak it all up. I could not have asked to rent from better people. All around perfect.

Fantastic location, lovely accommodations

  • 5 of 5

Exactly as advertised. Spectacular view. Relaxing environment. Remote. We did it in October, so it was great for contemplation. Finding the exact turn off spot from highway 47 and then navigating the dirt access road down to your "driveway" feels like a bit of an adventure at first (and I'm glad we did not have to attempt it in the pitch-dark that first time) but once you get the hang of things, its all A-OK. We miss the place already -- especially the fresh air. If you're interested in getting a feel for the real Iceland, then do it.

Not the experience we expected- I wish I could give it no stars, but it makes me click at least one

  • 1 of 5

We were really disappointed with our stay. In fact, there was a rodent issue and hot water problems, so we had to find another place to rent in the city. I e-mailed the owner to ask for a refund for 4 nights because of these issues and there still hasn't been any reply. It was definitely not a pleasant experience for us.

Also, I made the mistake of not reading all of the information that was sent to me in German. Huge mistake on my part! It would've taken me a long time to translate it. So, when we got there we found out that there was only 1500 MB of internet usage per day. I found this out the hard way because I didn't translate those German documents. So, if you're American and want to rent this place, I highly recommend translating everything in English before deciding to rent this place. There's only 1 TV station and I guess because it's so remote the satellite is spotty and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. We had planned on watching Netflix, but 1500 MB of internet doesn't go far when you stream movies. Also, the owner said there was a DVD player. We didn't see/find one. There are games, but they are all in German.

It is a very remote place. The road to get here is difficult when it snows even if you have 4WD. When it is snowy and windy it is very drafty and cold in the cabin. Snow blew in under the doors and air seeped in around all the windows in the cabin.

Also, there's no freezer. We didn't know this because it said refrigerator and I assumed there would be a freezer. We went to the grocery store after our flight got in and before we drove to the rental. So, I was surprised that there was no freezer. Just an FYI before you buy freezer goods.

The owner offered to set a trap for the big mouse we found in the cabin the 2nd morning we were there. It was in our bedroom in the corner beside my bed. My husband tried to catch it, but it ran into the kitchen. It chewed a huge hole in my slipper. I had to clean up mice poop under the cabinet with the pots and pans. There was also a large amount of mice poop under the sink. I decided it wasn't sanitary for my family and I and we found a rental apartment in the city and left. I was so excited to visit Iceland and this experience was definitely not the best.

I e-mailed the owner that we were leaving on Monday after we found the mouse and other mice poop and he never sent a reply. I am really disappointed, but am glad my family and I were lucky to find another place to stay.

Owner's Response: Dear readers, I write my comment in German because this is my communication language as indicated on fewo-direkt/homeaway/vrbo. Winter wonderland

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous 5 nights on the Whale Fjord staying at this cosy, well-appointed cottage. The whole experience of booking with Dominik and Anke was lovely - they were really helpful and informative throughout. For example, we received a massive pile of maps, brochures and information from Dominik through the post several weeks before our trip - this was perfect to help us plan, and Dominik's recommendations were very helpful (we went on the "Into the Glacier" tour he recommended - this was fantastic and we would recommend to anyone).

The cottage itself is beautifully situated close to the water's edge with stunning panoramic views. It is warm, quiet, well-equipped and comfortable - in short, the perfect place to while away the winter nights. We stayed during a heavy snow storm and strong winds and we were still able to sleep well.

One thing to note if you are travelling in the winter - a 4x4 is essential as the driveway to the cottage is covered with deep snow!

The only criticism we could make is that the cottage is not very easy to find the first time you look for it, and the only directions available were in German. We would suggest providing the GPS co-ordinates of the cottage, and directions in English, to guests that request them.

Overall, we would recommend the cottage to anyone looking for somewhere quiet and beautiful to stay - away from the city, but still close enough to all the main attractions (you can easily do the Golden Circle from where the cottage is located, and even the Blue Lagoon is only an hour or so away).

Thank you Dominik and Anke!

Ruhiges Landhaus in toller Lage

  • 5 of 5

Liebe Grüße

Kirsten und Maik

Kaffi Kjós nur in den Sommermonaten
Car: necessary

This cozy little cottage is located about 45 minutes' drive from the capital Reykjavik on the south coast of the scenic Hvalfjordur (Whale fjord). From here you can do many excursions:

An example would be the exploration of the 30 km long whale fjord, which will then be their home address. Either you take a walk with sturdy shoes to the highest waterfall (Glymur) or visit the Hallgrímskirkja in Saurbær that you can recognize from "Villa Artists look" on the opposite bank. But alone the wonderful sight of the mountains and the sea, which, whether in winter or summer ever appear in a new light and color, a round trip are worth. Afterwards you may visit the village Borgarnes or the famous waterfalls Hraunfossar ("Lava" waterfall), Barnafossar ("Kinder" waterfall) in connection with an "Into the Glacier Tour" (also bookable through us).

Another day trip to Thingvellir National Park is also possible to learn something of the history of Iceland and the island geology, marvel at and following the fountain of known geyser called Strokkur and the gigantic Gullfoss- waterfall.

Even the South is to achieve still good from here. One possibility would be a day trip to the famous waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss at the foot of the famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier which brought global air transport in 2010, with its ash cloud disrupted.

In any case you should visit Iceland's capital Reykjavík. This bustling city with its cozy restaurants, bars, cafes, quaint fish restaurants at the harbor, the many museums, art and attractions invites sure a often.

Your shopping is done best in the town, 30 minutes away Mosfellsbær. There are next to several supermarkets, a bakery, fishmonger, bank, post office, pharmacy, restaurants and cafes. The perfect end to the day offers also the swimming pool Lagafellslaug. With several Geothermalbecken, slides and saunas, the small and the great will certainly need their delight. But see for yourself!

In summer, we recommend the "Kaffi Kjós" (about 10 km from Villa Künstlerblick) with a beautiful sun terrace overlooking Lake Meðafellsvatn. There you can buy a small selection of food and taste the delicious home-made cake or something "hearty" from the menu.

Welcome to "Villa Artists look"
