Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday chalet in Big Sky

Chalet, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

This lovely 2,160 square foot, three bedroom, three bathroom coach home chalet features all the desirable vacation conveniences including high speed internet access and a Bonus Room/ Loft which provides an additional gathering place as well as a queen sleep sofa for additional flexibility. Note: Most residences available for rent in Firelight Meadows do not have this Bonus Room Loft. This residence is exactly an 8 minute drive to the drop off point at the Big Sky lifts and a 40 minute drive to West Yellowstone.

In 2014, Michele and I purchased a second and third residence in Firelight Meadows which are laid out EXACTLY like this one but one is decorated in a colorful Cabin Chic style and the other in a Modern Western motif. Please see VRBO #582804 and VRBO #608472. These residences may be booked separately or together....they are 3 blocks apart in the same residential community as this residence. Both of these new residences were built in the last phase of development and they have a bit more oak trim, a rocked fireplace, and look up-mountain with afternoon sun; otherwise identical to this listing! Checkout all three calendars and bring some extended family or friends!

Please note that in March 2015, Michele and I purchased our fourth and final residence here in the Big Sky Meadow. This new residence is located over on the Meadow Golf Course and it is a bit more upscale with a private swimming pool for summer use. Check it out if you like at VRBO #695730.

Residence 240962 Description:

2016 Update: Finally Finished with the help of our interior decorator, Jodee March who owns the gift shop, Horse of a Different Color in Big Sky. In keeping with our partnership commitment to the families who rent with us, we are pleased to announce that Michele and I have recently concluded making some additional updates to this residence: All new mattresses and bedding, updated artwork, new dining table and chairs, and new furniture in the downstairs living areas and bedroom.

2015 Update: We are pleased to announce that this residence has been recently refurbished with new wood flooring throughout both floors of the residence. We are also adding new furnishings in the living room as well as a few more surprise accents around the fireplace and at other points on the main level similar to our VRBO 608472.

Update Fall 2014: Michele and I replaced all window treatments in the residence and they look fantastic! Also there is a large new, Organic-focused grocery store in the meadow which opened in November of 2014. The name of the grocery is Roxy's! Enjoy.

UPDATE FALL 2013: New 50' Flat Panel HDTV. New Hot Tub! New Tile throughout the entire residence (entry, laundry, kitchen and all bathrooms). Completely re-painted. New theme oriented light fixtures throughout. New black kitchen appliances (fridge, dishwasher, range, microwave).

Upstairs, the large loft with pull-out couch provides a quiet place to read, relax, write, or simply gaze out the window to contemplate a beautiful up-mountain view. The Master Suite has a queen log bed, TV/DVD, enormous closet, and a private bath with double sinks. The upstairs guest bedroom has a queen log bed and a full/single log bunk bed, TV/DVD, spectacular down mountain views, and a private bath. The main floor bedroom has a queen log bed, library, spectacular down mountain view, and a private bath.

The main floor is comfortably laid out with a large kitchen/dining/living room alignment. The kitchen is fully stocked with all necessary cooking and serving utensils. The dining room can be made to seat 8 and there are four barstools which pull up to an elevated kitchen counter. The living room contains a beautiful, elevated slate fireplace, two great couches and the world’s most comfortable reading chair along with a third TV/DVD. The living room ends with sliding glass doors which open onto a concrete terrace with a private hot tub, gas grill, and spectacular down mountain views. The attached garage contains space for one automobile, ample wood for the fireplace, ski and board storage, and a worktable for tuning ski equipment. The inside of the Home was freshly painted in the summer of 2013.

Located in the Meadow Village of Big Sky, this home is close to everything. The base lodge at Big Sky Ski Resort is a brief 8 minute ride from your home. Newly constructed half pipe, jumps and many pre-fab structures make Big Sky a Mecca for snow boarders. During ski season a free shuttle bus runs prescheduled loops between one block from your home and the base facilities at Big Sky. Bars, restaurants, and grocery are just around the corner and a hiking trail to access the famous; Ousel Falls State Park is literally… just across the street. One of the World’s finest cross-country skiing facilities at Lone Mountain Ranch is two miles from your front door and in summer months, the Arnold Palmer designed Big Sky Golf Course is less than a mile away. The Gallatin, Madison, and Yellowstone rivers make Big Sky THE place to be for the fly-fishing enthusiast seeking world class, blue ribbon fishing. Believe it or not, fly-fishing is a “year-round” endeavor.

A little 2012 BIG SKY update: Well it finally happened; Big Sky now has a first-run, three screen movie theater in the Big Sky Meadow about one mile from our front door. Adult beverages and food may be brought into the theater. The Lone Mountain Brewery is now serving great, inexpensive 'bar/family' food. An awesome hand shuffleboard court is free and the Montana Lemonade (spiked with two shots of 44 North Mountain Huckleberry Vodka) is wonderful along with an assortment of craft beers manufactured on site.

A little 2013 BIG SKY update: Our entire family was in residence recently (9/2013). As we have done in the past, we took a couple of guides out on the Gallatin river to do some awesome, purist, upstream nymph fly-fishing. We had both great fun and great fishing success and it was as expensive as skiing for a day...or two. Contrary to popular belief, if you go looking for "deeper holes" in the Gallatin, bait-fishing or spin-cast fishing works and requires no waders and no getting into a cold, slick, river. Massively fun for kids of all ages. Please see my daughter's HOG Brown Trout in the pictures section of the website! Our boys also reported that there is a newly developed concrete skateboard park that is as awesome as any park one would find in a major metropolitan area. My oldest son manufactures skateboards and trust me....he knows his skateparks.

The Yellowstone National Park boundary is about 20 miles away and the town of West Yellowstone is about 40 miles south of the entrance to Big Sky. Summer or winter; Yellowstone is a huge hit with both children and adults! Hundreds of miles of unique hiking trails range throughout the entire area both inside and outside the park.

There is simply so much to do and see that it is impossible to cover it all here; however as an interesting update….you may have heard about swinging through the jungles of the South American Rain Forrest….well you can now swing above the skiers and hikers of Big Sky’s Lone Mountain! Two other organizations have also created complex challenge courses: tree stands, cargo nets, obstacles, zip lines etc....great family fun.

Michele and I are pleased to assist you with further information and introductions.

About Phil Barnhill

Michele and I live in Minnesota, we have three children, and we have vacationed in Big Sky for more than 15 years. Big Sky is like a great marriage: you will fall in lust with it at first sight, it will grow on you, you will have many adventures, occasional hardships like getting lost while hiking or getting a federal speeding ticket in Yellowstone Park, or hitting an elk with your vehicle, you will create memories and while Michele and I have LOVED going to Big Sky, we have always LOVED going home....until this last trip with the kids in September, 2013. It is inexplicable...but we absolutely did NOT want to come home for the very first time ever. Our hearts are hooked by Montana. God's creation is truly magnificent!

Phil Barnhill purchased this chalet in 2004

Why Phil Barnhill chose Montana

This coach home chalet was a 'test' purchase to see if our family could really fall in love with the area: It passed the test! We've had such a great experience that several years ago we also bought 20 acres of raw land just south of Big Sky where we intend to build a second home. Minnesota is beautiful but Montana is awe inspiring....renewing. Normally, it takes an ocean to renew and revive us but we have discovered that if you can get into the backcountry by hiking, fishing in remote locations along the Gallatin, riding a horse or yes...even mountain biking into the Porcupine wilderness, you will be revived. Riding a horse to the fire lookout station on top of Cinnamon Mountain is.....beyond words. You will feel blessed to be in the midst of such wilderness, such grander. We are part of something soooo much bigger than ourselves and our own little world in flatland, flyover territory in Minnesota. Minnesota is wonderful and the boundary waters wilderness is something most folks should experience....Montana is a place everybody should visit at least once.

What makes this chalet unique

We love the family-oriented environment. Big Sky is NOT Vail...it's a quiet Western town that just happens to be at the base of one of America's largest and most majestic mountains. Fishermen freak out over this country and skiers are elated because there are NO lift lines. We can't decide if we like it best in summer or winter. This country has sooooooooo very much to offer...and unlike Minnesota.....NO Mosquitoes! 2013 update: This is the owner's section and it's just Phil talking here....but I have made up my mind. While I LOVE to ski (both ways) and I enjoy an occasional romp on a fast snowmobile down in West Yellowstone....Summers in Big Sky have absolutely stolen my heart.

This property was very spacious and represented well by the photos we previewed on the website.

First of all what a beautiful property this rental was. It was conveniently located to all the activities that we planned for our stay. This is the first time we have used vrbo and the booking process was easy, we heard back about our request to rent within hours, the communication from Phil and Michelle about directions, attractions, restaurants was all very helpful. When we arrived the information for entering the property was accurate and easy. We would certainly give this a "5" star rating but when we arrived the property had not been cleaned from the previous guests. The beds were unmade and there were dirty towels in all the bathrooms, unmade beds, and dishes in the dishwasher and in the sink. Although this was a bit distressing we contacted the property manager immediately and she was there within 15 minutes to rectify the situation. We went into the city center to explore and when we came back everything was clean and the only thing we had to do was dry and fold a load of towels. Without a doubt if we were in the area for vacation again we would hope to be able to stay at this property again.

Owner's Response: Rebecca, thank you for the lovely review and your positive affirmation of your experience even though you CLEARLY had a most unfortunate first impression. All I can say is that Michele and I are so sorry for the unfortunate lapse in our cleaning system. It takes very careful coordination with so many back-to-back rentals. Between our Big Sky residences we now have close to 100 reviews and you will not find another instance of this kind of situation. Unfortunately, it happened, it is our fault, and we sincerely apologize. The good news is that Mariah was able to immediately respond to your situation and correct the oversight. Thank you Mariah, and thank you Rebecca for looking past this initial oversight and not letting it ruin your stay with us or in Big Sky! All the best... Phil, Michele, and Mariah.

Wonderful Week in Yellowstone and Big Sky

  • 5 of 5

We spent five days with our 2 daughters and their husbands. Had a wonderful time. The boys went fly fishing and the girls went to Lone Mountain. We all went on an hour and a half horse back ride at Jake's - fabulous view and a definite highlight. We also spent 2 of our days in Yellowstone - highlights included seeing a black bear on one of our hikes.

Overall it was an incredible time. The condo was beautiful, clean and had everything we needed. We took advantage of the hot tub on a nightly basis. Great after a day of hiking. We also enjoyed using the grill to cook instead of always eating out. It was beautifully decorated and had all the conveniences.

Phil and Michelle are wonderful host and will be happy to share with you any information on places to eat and things to do.

Could not have been happier with our experience!

Big Sky- Get Outside! Explore!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay! New decor and beds are comfy! Must say, we were hardly in the chalet since its summer and as the East Slope's slogan says, "Get outside!" We did! We hiked Beehive, Golden Trout (same parking as Windy Pass), and Lone Mountain Ranch as well as Ousel Falls. We horseback rode through the Gallatin River with Canyon Adventures. Boys did plenty of fly fishing and the youngest caught a nice 20" rainbow! To top it off, our family hiked Bone Crusher to gain 2,015 ft. elev. in 2.8 miles. Character building expedition to the summit of Lone Peak. On our last day, used Geyser Expeditions to whitewater raft the Gallatin River! Beautiful, dry mountain air with hardly a bug compared to back home in MN. Great stay at Firelight Meadows, love being at the base of the mountains! Views of mountains everywhere you look! It was fun to try some different restaraunts (that Phil and Michelle recommended) which were less busy than our last winter time stay! Our kids were sad to leave and made us promise a return trip sooner this time! We LOVE Big Sky!

Owner's Response: Heidi, Bone Crusher? For anybody reading this, a 2,200+ ft gain in altitude is a daunting hike for any fit person but to do this starting at a 9,000 feet and rising to 11,200 feet in 2.8 miles is indeed a rush and it's coming back down that is actually a "Bone Crusher!" How fun and thanks for sharing this tidbit. Here is what I noticed from your nice review: I observed the VARIETY of activities your family enjoyed and yet, it was just the beginning. I believe this is one reason why the longer the Barnhill family has owned in Big Sky, the MORE we fall in love with summer and fall. September is Spectacular! Though in winter you have X Country, Downhill, Snowshoes, Snowmobiling, and fishing; it seems that most of these winter activities require more prep time, and special dressing and a bit more "stress," though it is positive stress. In summer it seams more relaxed and "chill." Though now that I think of it, it's tough to find an activity that's much more "chill" than sitting in a hot tub looking up at the stars, or reclining on a couch in front of a natural wood fire in the middle of winter reading a great book or allowing yourself the luxury of simply dozing off right there until 2am. As our now grown children would often say, "Hey, it's ALL GOOD!" Thank you for the nice review Heidi....Best, Phil, Michele, and Mariah

Montana Memories

  • 5 of 5

Upon entering the residence, we felt quite at home. The Western/Rustic theme was magnificent! The theme was prevalent throughout the house: paintings, furniture, and accent pieces! My family loved the accommodations - 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms complete with linens, towels, hair dryers, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, grill, hot tub, and a full kitchen! We also enjoyed the t.v./game area upstairs. In fact, if someone went missing, he/she could be found taking a nap in that area. The Big Sky area is beautiful. We went on 3 hikes: Ousel Falls, Lava Lake, and Beehive Basin. Mr. Phil was right; you need to hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate ! Make sure you take PLENTY of water due to the high altitude! We discovered very quickly that we were flatlanders! Lol! The gondola (tram) ride on Lone Mountain was an experience like no other! My entire family loved it - even my mother-in-law who was scared of heights! We also went into Yellowstone Park; that will take you a day to hit the highlights of the park. Everyone needs to visit at least once; the landforms and animals are extraordinary! Upon leaving Yellowstone, stop and visit in the little town of West Yelliowdtone. It's a good place to shop and eat! Overall, we had a blast! This was the best vacation ever taken with my family- lots of laughs, triumphs with hikes, and just a good ole time!!!! Thank you so much, Mr. Phil and Ms. Michele , for allowing us to stay in your home! From your home to your recommendations on activities, my family had a fabulous time!

Owner's Response: Wow, April, thank you for the lovely review. Our appreciation for the review, while very flattering for this residence was also quite flattering of the area and the enjoyment your family had here. A common theme in our responses is that your appreciation is much appreciated because the reviews help other people feel comfortable about coming to Big Sky Country! Bless you and thank you! Perfect for us!

  • 5 of 5

This condo was exactly what we needed for our stay in Big Sky; conveniently located in Meadow Village for our various activities. The interior had beautiful, functional décor with noticeable upgrades to the entire space. A fully-stocked kitchen made meal prep and clean-up simple. Beds were comfy; showers were clean. Actually the entire condo was incredibly clean! Although I never spoke directly with the owners, they made themselves available through email and voicemail communication. Things like parking availability, WiFi code and garbage instructions were clearly noted inside. Knowing the owners have more than one property, we will check with them again on our next trip west!

Owner's Response: Lisa, I am sorry that we never spoke personally but so glad that you had a great experience. Our decorator, Jodee March, who owns the wonderful gift shop, Horse of a Different Color, had just finished her makeover of 286, which was our first residence in Big Sky. We are pleased you liked it and we APPRECIATE so much hearing that it was clean and inviting. Mariah Jimmerson, our property manager, is a HUGE part of our success in Big Sky. We simply could not run multiple residences without her love for our guests, her responsiveness, and her attention to detail. Thank you for recognizing Mariah's dedication to excellence! I know it's weird...but her recognition brings moisture to my eyes because we are so thankful for her partnership because it makes our partnership with wonderful guests like you a reality!

Owner's Response: Thanks Mike! We appreciate your appreciation! I think I mentioned in a previous message that we are soon purchasing new mattresses for all beds and a new kitchen table and chairs. Over the coming years we will likely move the decor of this residence more in the direction of modern western. Stay tuned. Thanks again. Phil and Michele

The VRBO damage deposit insurance of $59 is required so that we do NOT have to collect a refundable, cash damage deposit and this is a wonderful benefit for all stakeholders.
We would consider splitting the rent into two payments; but our standard operating procedure is to collect 100% in advance. Cleaning fees are moving upward in Big Sky; great dependable labor is difficult to find and difficult to manage. Our places are spotless. Thank you.

EVERYBODY wears a helmet when skiing or boarding at Big Sky and Moonlight. The three connected resorts are audaciously maintained and spectacular. Please do not overlook the beautiful and upscale Moonlight Basin main lodge which is open to the public and has a complete spa, pool and exercise facility plus a bar, fireplace and dining room. The Big Sky base lodge is quite serviceable but ordinary (though I am hearing rumors of a pending upgrade). Do not miss the upscale restaurant/bar located on the mountain...a bit expensive but oh sooo worth it! Our place is just a spacious awesome place to hang...not fancy but comfortable and comforting with lots of early sunlight and a killer view through the deck doors. 8 minutes from the Big Sky base lodge and 35-45 minutes from West Yellowstone. Enjoy!!!!!!!
