Maryann and I live on 4th Avenue, just two doors down from The Berkeley Beach House. She is the owner of Mise en Place, one of Tampa's finest restaurants; I'm a corporate lawyer, specializing in the representation of private equity funds.
Elaine Malloy purchased this house in 2008
When the property was listed for sale, we viewed it as an opportunity to restore a great old beach house, to preserve our neighborhood's charm and village character, and to share the magnificent Pass a Grille beach experience with family and friends (some of whom we hadn't met yet).
Berkeley Beach House is located just steps from the beach, at the very quiet southern end of the peninsula but only four blocks from Pass a Grille's lively 8th Avenue shopping/restaurant district. For those looking for more nightlife, the bars and restaurants of the many beach communities are minutes away on Gulf Boulevard and beautiful downtown St. Petersburg is just a short (10 minute) drive.
We celebrated our wedding anniversary in the Berkeley Beach House in Dec. 2016.
There are so many things to like about the 1-bedroom Pass A Grille suite, but one thing that really impressed us was the cleanliness of the unit. Also, the layout was very well planned and most of the room sizes are generous. There is an eat-in kitchen with full size refrigerator, bathroom with a tub with shower, and a large living room. The bedroom has been created from part of the front porch, and a portion of the original exterior block wall adds character to the room. The bedroom is a bit narrow--the queen bed takes up most of its width--but it has lots of windows and doesn't feel closed in. There is a nice dresser and a very long closet with lots of hangers. The kitchen is well equipped--just about anything you could possibly need is provided. There are beach chairs for sunny weather and umbrellas for when it rains--which we fortunately did not have to use!
But the absolute best thing about the BBH is its location--it is 108 steps from the front porch steps to the wooden walkway to Pass A Grille Beach. We had mostly beautiful weather for December--temps in the low to mid 70s with warm Gulf waters--and we spent most every day of our vacation on the beach. If you are into shelling, this is the place to go. The beach ends 4 blocks south, and a variety of beautiful shells wash up on the sands on either side of the bulkhead. There are lots of conch shells, but you have to make sure they are not inhabited!
We spent one day walking around the Pass A Grille area and visiting the shops and the Beach Museum. The museum has a lot of interesting exhibits, and the volunteer who was there the day we went was very knowledgeable and informative. There is also a walking tour of historic Pass A Grille with info on the older homes and buildings and how the area was developed.
Pass A Grille is a wonderful place, and we can't wait to get back to spend more time at Berkeley Beach House!
My husband and I only had 3 days to enjoy this adorable one bedroom suite. Great location. We walked everywhere. Used the cute kitchen for one meal and walked all around the area and out to eat. Comfortable, quiet location, close to beach and restaurants. Want to bring more family back for a stay!
This was the perfect set up for our family vacation. We stayed in the Mango Suite and couldn't have been any more pleased. The kitchen set up had everything we needed and we were able save money by having breakfast and lunch/snacks on hand (teenagers!). The availability of the beach chairs and floaties was the icing on the cake so far as convenience goes. If we were at the beach and suddenly realized we forgot something it was just a quick dash back to the house to grab it.
We were able to lounge around in the morning and eat breakfast outside in the covered patio (usually while challenging one another to a game of tiki toss). Spent our days traveling around and being tourist, spend our afternoons at the beach, head back to the Mango Suite to change before walking to dinner, then back to the beach for a sunset stroll home to read, play cards etc.
The location is top notch, the suite itself has everything you could ask for and the beaches and clear waters of pass-a-grille are just magical.
We have stayed at the Beach House for seven years straight. It is perfectly located adjacent to the beach. It is also in the neighborhood with little or no traffic. The location and ease of access and the very affordable rates make it almost unbeatable. I have looked at other properties but none offer the location at a reasonable price. It is simple, clean and affordable.
Very quaint little place to stay… Except only two little air-conditioners so the kitchen and the bathroom is very hot!!!!!! When we got there my husband and my daughter's friend had to fix the breaker so we can have lights because when I plugged in to blow dry my hair I blew a fuse!!!!! Also I found the owner to be very rude !!!!! when you're renting from somebody I think you should be a little nicer!!!!! Told her about the kitchen and the bathroom being very hot and she told me she never had a complaint which I know for fact that is not true because I talk to somebody else who stayed there!!!!
This was our first time to at Pete beach and we will be back for sure! This suite was perfect for me and my husband. We had plenty of room for the two of us and all the accommodations that you would need. Elaine was a pleasure to worm with. Until next time!
