The island of Zakynthos was in its history, in contrast to the Greek mainland for more than seven centuries under Western and Central European domination. The Venetians, who ruled the island for more than four centuries, called Zakynthos or Zante, nicknamed "Fior di Levante" (Flower of the East). Tourist Zakynthos to Corfu is the most important destination of the Ionian Islands. Special importance has Zakynthos as main breeding sea turtle Caretta caretta (loggerhead turtle) in the Mediterranean: 1999 a National Marine Park was established to protect the nesting sites, also in the increasing tourism, approved by the Greek State. A particularly popular destination is only accessible from the sea Shipwreck Bay with the shipwreck of Zakynthos. The wreck of the coaster "Panagiotis" is there on a small beach surrounded by up to 200 meters high, straight up towering cliffs, above which there is a small platform. It is the only vantage point that allows the land side views of the wreck. The smuggler ship ran aground in October 1980, when storms tracked by the Coast Guard as it suffered a mechanical breakdown and leaderless with his illegal cargo of cigarettes in the formerly stranded bay called "Agios Georgios". The crew of the ship was able to save himself. Dionysios Solomos was the famous poet of the island. Much is named after him. The capital of Zakynthos is located on the east coast in the form of an ancient theater, on a hill whose summit is crowned by the citadel built by the Venetians. She has many Greek Orthodox churches (including the Church of Panagia Faneromeni and Agios Dionysios) and a Roman Catholic church. The city is characterized by the Venetian influence considerably in their architecture and urban layout. When the earthquake on the 12th August 1953 was Zakynthos town almost completely destroyed. The west coast is rocky and mostly poorly accessible.
