Ocean View, Tremendous Historic Home with a 'Cook's Kitchen'

Bedrooms 6
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 6 Bedrooms + 6 Baths, (Sleeps 9-17)

This home was built in 1895 and is listed in the National Historic Register. It is on the north side of Tybee, away from the commercial area and the crowds. Officers in the US Army were stationed here during World Wars I and II. The beautifully remodeled full kitchen has granite countertops, high end appliances (including two dishwashers, an oversized refrigerator, a six burner smooth top stove, and a stereo system with an MP3/IPod hookup). There is seating for 16 people at the dining room table. The den/library houses a flat screened TV and a DVD player. A marvelous open porch graces three sides of this home with approximately 1000 square feet of outdoor living area and includes rocking chairs and two picnic tables. The first floor features one bedroom (originally the 'Stryker's Quarters'), which is located just off the kitchen. There is a queen size bed in this bedroom, a separate air conditioner, claw tub bath, and its own entrance. There is additional bathroom with a shower on the first floor. There are three bedrooms and three full baths on the second floor, which also has about 1000 square feet of open porches. Each of the bedrooms on the second floor is abundantly sized, has tall ceilings, and a working transom above the door. All bedrooms, as well as the kitchen, living room, and downstairs hallway, have ceiling fans. The third floor has two bedrooms and one bath: one bedroom has a double and queen beds, there other has a queen, a double, and a twin bed. This grand home is for the exclusive use of its guests. The beach is 600 feet from the front door through a quiet (no traffic) neighborhood. Also there is no nearby public beach access parking making this one of the most least occupied sections of beach on the island. Parties and events such as weddings and graduation parties are not permitted.

The Fort Screven and North Beach area offers fascinating military history, beautiful dunes, long beaches, a nice park, and an eclectic community of homes that is fun to observe on foot or bike. The natural dunes, with sea oats and other dune plants and animals, along with a view of Tybee Roads and Daufuskie and Hilton Head islands, make for a beautiful natural setting worth visiting. Also attracting attention are the mammoth container cargo ships, some almost as long as a 75 story building, plowing the waters of Savannah harbor. The Fort Screven installation gave Tybee a military character for more than 50 years, when 30 percent of Tybee Island's population consisted of military personnel. Today, the former base is a National Historic District. Behind the Officers' Row houses is the former parade ground. Today it is Jaycee Park. This is the best park on the island, equipped with a jogging path, exercise stations, and a baseball field. Lieutenant Colonel George Catlett Marshall (who was responsible later in his career for the Marshall Plan for the economic reorganization of Europe after World War II) lived next door. During his tenure at Fort Screven, the City of Savannah gave the crape myrtles to the fort as thanks to Marshall and his community minded command. A small creek winds through the park, adding to its attractiveness, as do the Live Oaks, cedars, bayberries, and wax myrtles.

About Patricia Allgood

This is our family's house, left to us by our parents. The 'immediate' family (including nieces, nephews and their children) now totals in excess of 40 people. The memories the house holds for us are endless -- we hope you will make some of your own fine memories here!

Patricia Allgood purchased this house in 1969

Why Patricia Allgood chose Tybee Island

This is a large and gracious, historic home built in 1895. It was used by the military to house officers and their families until after WWII. My parents 'discovered' Tybee Island in 1963 when my father was transferred to Savannah. They purchased a home on Officers' Row that year, then bought this house in approximately 1969. When our parents died, they wanted us to keep the house so that we could continue to enjoy Tybee and each other, and so that future generations could also enjoy this wonderful haven.

What makes this house unique

The home is spacious and airy; there are 11 foot ceilings throughout most of the house, with the kitchen having a 14 foot ceiling! We love to cook, so the kitchen is very well stocked with pots, pans, etc. -- but also with a large refrigerator (plus at least one spare 'drink' fridge), two dishwashers, a large oven/stove, a microwave, a six burner stove, and plenty of storage. The dining room seats 14-16 people, and the porch has two picnic tables. The massive porches wrap around most of the house. Most of the home has the original heart pine floors, and molded tin ceilings adorn the hallway, dining room, living room, and library/den. The bedrooms are all very amply sized -- two have king sized beds, two have queen sized beds, and two have multiple beds. Many of the bedrooms have the original working transom windows, and two have (nonworking) original fireplaces. While we have found it essential to retain the character of the house, it is modernized for functionality and in its furnishings. The ocean breeze keeps bugs away MOST of the year and the beach is a short walk. Access to the beach is through a private access, so it is a wonderful private area to enjoy the day in the sand. Public access to the beach is very limited on this part of the island so even on the most crowded weekends you will have plenty of room for you and your guests.

Across the street from the private drive used to access the house, there is a terrific park with a childrens playground, a basketball court, a walking trail, and a baseball field. Also within walking distance is the Tybee Lighthouse and the Tybee Museum and the new Tybee Post Theather as well as 3 great restaurants.

Our family had a wonderful weekend in this house.

  • 4 of 5

As other reviewers have said, this is an old house! Be prepared for that as the family has left many items from bygone days in the house. We were attracted to the house because of It’s rich military history and the veterans in our group had an appreciation for this. The bed and room configuration of the house suited our group just fine. We enjoyed the large table for dining all together and the kitchen is well-stocked and had everything we were looking for. Yes, the bathrooms with their tub or showers are a bit quirky so we just shared and used the showers on other floors if we didn’t like the one closest to our bedroom. Our family enjoyed the ping pong table during our stay. We walked on the beach and went to see the lighthouse. When we left, we all agreed that we had settled into the house and would remember it fondly.

Wonderful Labor Day Weekend stay!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 14 (ages 15 months to 60) stayed in this beautiful historic home over Labor Day weekend as we celebrated my mother-in-law's 80th birthday. The owners went above & beyond to accommodate our needs and even met with a caterer prior to our arrival to plan for a low country boil that Saturday. The home exudes history (was once an officer's home during WWII) and wonderful family memories created by other guests and the owner's family. The home is exactly as pictured and described. If you're looking for the Ritz, this is not your place. But if you want a home with character, warmth and family-perfect, this IS your place. Convenient location (away from the crowds but walking distance to Tybee Lighthouse and the beach) and well-equipped makes this home a great place to stay.

Wonderful Labor Day Weekend Stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 14 (ages 15 months to 60) enjoyed a wonderful stay at this historic home on Tybee Island as we celebrated my mother-in-laws 80th birthday! The owners were most attentive to our specific needs, and even met with a caterer prior to our visit for a family event we had planned during our weekend stay. The property is exactly as described. The home easily handled our group that swelled to 30 for a low country boil on Saturday night. If you're looking for the Ritz, this isn't your place, but if you want to stay in a home that exudes history and lots of family memories (if walls could talk), this home is perfect. Nothing frumpy or pretentious, but definitly warm and welcoming.

Home not what it seems in the pictures.

  • 2 of 5

I know that this is an old historic home, but there are rooms that just should not be used by guests in this house. The attic rooms are awful. There was even a chair in one of them with the stuffing torn out of it. You have to walk through unfinished attic space to get to the awful bathroom. The second floor bedrooms are ok, but the baths need some serious cleaning and updating. The bathroom in the small apartment next to the kitchen had a toilet that would not flush. The guests in that apartment had to pour water down the toilet every time, even when the owner came and said it was fixed. He said the problem was that the toilet was old. My suggestion is to replace the toilet. These guests would have had to go out and re-enter the house from a different door in order to have a toilet that flushed. Not very convenient in the middle of the night. Neither dish washer in the kitchen worked well. The owner worked on one of them and got it to work ok. The other one never did work. We knew that the living room had not been cleaned when we arrived because there were still puzzle pieces on the rug. The best thing about this house is that it is close to the beach, and the beach is beautiful! I would not recommend this house. You do not get what you pay for.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. Regarding cleaning, that week our regular crew was not there, so apologies if puzzle pieces left on floor. They normally do a great job. We have done several recent improvements to the 3rd floor, yet it is designed for the younger guests as we have 2 beds in one room, and 3 in the other. We sincerely want guests to enjoy the house and believe most do as shown from the reviews, sorry it did not meet your expectations.

Beautiful Historic Home

  • 5 of 5

8 of us stayed at this wonderful home. Everything needed was furnished. Spacious everywhere. Loved the dining room, it was nice to seat all of us at the same table. Loved the architecture of the home, with the high ceilings and ornate wood work, as well as the wavy glass from the period in which it was built. The porches are huge, and have a nice view of the ocean, of which is a short walk to the beach. The home is situated among others built in the same period, and a treat to be in such a quite neighborhood. ABSOLUTELY loved this OLD historic home!
