Overview

About the property

House, 6 Bedrooms + 6 Baths, (Sleeps 9-17)

This home was built in 1895 and is listed in the National Historic Register. It is on the north side of Tybee, away from the commercial area and the crowds. Officers in the US Army were stationed here during World Wars I and II. The beautifully remodeled full kitchen has granite countertops, high end appliances (including two dishwashers, an oversized refrigerator, a six burner smooth top stove, and a stereo system with an MP3/IPod hookup). There is seating for 16 people at the dining room table. The den/library houses a flat screened TV and a DVD player. A marvelous open porch graces three sides of this home with approximately 1000 square feet of outdoor living area and includes rocking chairs and two picnic tables. The first floor features one bedroom (originally the 'Stryker's Quarters'), which is located just off the kitchen. There is a queen size bed in this bedroom, a separate air conditioner, claw tub bath, and its own entrance. There is additional bathroom with a shower on the first floor. There are three bedrooms and three full baths on the second floor, which also has about 1000 square feet of open porches. Each of the bedrooms on the second floor is abundantly sized, has tall ceilings, and a working transom above the door. All bedrooms, as well as the kitchen, living room, and downstairs hallway, have ceiling fans. The third floor has two bedrooms and one bath: one bedroom has a double and queen beds, there other has a queen, a double, and a twin bed. This grand home is for the exclusive use of its guests. The beach is 600 feet from the front door through a quiet (no traffic) neighborhood. Also there is no nearby public beach access parking making this one of the most least occupied sections of beach on the island. Parties and events such as weddings and graduation parties are not permitted.

The Fort Screven and North Beach area offers fascinating military history, beautiful dunes, long beaches, a nice park, and an eclectic community of homes that is fun to observe on foot or bike. The natural dunes, with sea oats and other dune plants and animals, along with a view of Tybee Roads and Daufuskie and Hilton Head islands, make for a beautiful natural setting worth visiting. Also attracting attention are the mammoth container cargo ships, some almost as long as a 75 story building, plowing the waters of Savannah harbor. The Fort Screven installation gave Tybee a military character for more than 50 years, when 30 percent of Tybee Island's population consisted of military personnel. Today, the former base is a National Historic District. Behind the Officers' Row houses is the former parade ground. Today it is Jaycee Park. This is the best park on the island, equipped with a jogging path, exercise stations, and a baseball field. Lieutenant Colonel George Catlett Marshall (who was responsible later in his career for the Marshall Plan for the economic reorganization of Europe after World War II) lived next door. During his tenure at Fort Screven, the City of Savannah gave the crape myrtles to the fort as thanks to Marshall and his community minded command. A small creek winds through the park, adding to its attractiveness, as do the Live Oaks, cedars, bayberries, and wax myrtles.

About Patricia Allgood

This is our family's house, left to us by our parents. The 'immediate' family (including nieces, nephews and their children) now totals in excess of 40 people. The memories the house holds for us are endless -- we hope you will make some of your own fine memories here!

Patricia Allgood purchased this house in 1969

Why Patricia Allgood chose Coastal Georgia

This is a large and gracious, historic home built in 1895. It was used by the military to house officers and their families until after WWII. My parents 'discovered' Tybee Island in 1963 when my father was transferred to Savannah. They purchased a home on Officers' Row that year, then bought this house in approximately 1969. When our parents died, they wanted us to keep the house so that we could continue to enjoy Tybee and each other, and so that future generations could also enjoy this wonderful haven.

What makes this house unique

The home is spacious and airy; there are 11 foot ceilings throughout most of the house, with the kitchen having a 14 foot ceiling! We love to cook, so the kitchen is very well stocked with pots, pans, etc. -- but also with a large refrigerator (plus at least one spare 'drink' fridge), two dishwashers, a large oven/stove, a microwave, a six burner stove, and plenty of storage. The dining room seats 14-16 people, and the porch has two picnic tables. The massive porches wrap around most of the house. Most of the home has the original heart pine floors, and molded tin ceilings adorn the hallway, dining room, living room, and library/den. The bedrooms are all very amply sized -- two have king sized beds, two have queen sized beds, and two have multiple beds. Many of the bedrooms have the original working transom windows, and two have (nonworking) original fireplaces. While we have found it essential to retain the character of the house, it is modernized for functionality and in its furnishings. The ocean breeze keeps bugs away MOST of the year and the beach is a short walk. Access to the beach is through a private access, so it is a wonderful private area to enjoy the day in the sand. Public access to the beach is very limited on this part of the island so even on the most crowded weekends you will have plenty of room for you and your guests.

Across the street from the private drive used to access the house, there is a terrific park with a childrens playground, a basketball court, a walking trail, and a baseball field. Also within walking distance is the Tybee Lighthouse and the Tybee Museum and the new Tybee Post Theather as well as 3 great restaurants.

Perfect Relaxing Beach House

  • 5 of 5

This is the 12th consecutive year that we have rented this house and we will continue to rent as long as it is available!! Three generations of our family can stay comfortably in this house: a first floor apartment is perfect for an elderly member of the family and five upstairs bedrooms have plenty of space for couples to entire families. The very large and equipped kitchen, along with an extra-large dining room table that can easily seat 15, makes eating-in not only doable but also desirable. In fact, we only ate out once for the entire week. A short walk to the beach makes for easy access to an area of the beach with low-density population - no fighting for space or crowded conditions here! We love this place and are so thankful that the family that owns this wonderful historic home is willing to share it with the public. Thank you!

Great Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family, 8 adults and 6 children, had a wonderful time. We were told by the owners that the 4th of July week would be busy, Sunday through Tuesday was gridlock but after Tuesday the 4th normality was great. We walked to the beach every day several times and the beach was not crowded, even on the 4th, because only residents could park where the house is located. We loved the large dining table where all 14 could sit.

The house is 3 floors so if stairs are are problem be concerned. A/C worked great but needed to to keep the bedroom doors closed since hallways were warm. Garbage pickup, especially recycle was sketchy but it was a holiday week.

Again owners Patricia and John, we met Patricia there, we outstanding and we're available and prompt for every question. A non holiday week would be wonderful.

Great larger family vacation house at the beach

  • 5 of 5

We vacationed at this historic house with our three grown children, their spouses and four young children aged 2 to 7 years old - 12 people in all. This house has a huge chef-friendly kitchen with virtually everything a chef needs to prepare any kind of meal including a modern large stove, lots of prep area, large refrigerator, two sinks and dishwashers and lots of pots, pans, utensils, china and glasses. Our family has 2 chefs and we ate like kings all week. The dining room is huge and can easily seat 14 adults at one large table and we enjoyed sitting together for all of our meals. The rest of the house is also big. The house is old being built around 1900 and has the original woodwork, doors, and many of the windows. The five bathrooms are a combination of one porcelain bathtub without shower off the master bedroom, and others are bathtub with shower or just a shower. Besides a lot of room inside the three story house, there is a huge porch on both the first and second floors on three sides of the house that make relaxing early in the morning or late at night easy, or to find a quiet spot away from other guest. There is a beautiful lawn in front with large gazebo. There is a library with lots of reading material, especially books about the history of Tybee Island and Georgia's coastal wildlife and attractions. There are several flat screen cable TVs to entertain young and old kids as well as state-of-the-art WiFi. There is a large charcoal grill in the yard off the kitchen door for grilling outside. The beach is a very short walk from the front steps. Prior to and during our stay, I had conversations with three of the owners (all part of one family that grew up in the house) who were friendly, helpful and gracious. This house exudes history and is a great example of 100 year old architecture and charm. Any house this old shows some wear and tear but the experience makes up for any minor visual flaws. Imagine how you would look if you were over 100 years old! Location is great with stores, churches, restaurants, fort, and lighthouse very close. And the beach was magnificent with very few people on the beach because most houses on the beach in this part of the island are all private homes with very limited public beach access.

family friendly

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with three of my husband's siblings, our kids, and their kids. Kid ages ranged from 4 to 19, and everyone had a great time. The kitchen has everything you need, including TWO dishwashers, which made it possible to use real plates for all our meals. The house was big enough that you could wander around and have your own space but not too big to feel lost. Running off inside the house and then finding each other again was a great activity for the younger kids. It takes two minutes to walk to a great playground and ball field (we brought a kickball) and five minutes to walk to the beach. The three bedrooms on the second floor are large and very comfortable. The two bedrooms on the third floor are probably best for older kids bunking together or low-maintenance guests who don't care much about the bathroom. I didn't realize that the first floor bedroom is accessible *only* from the outside of the house and not the inside, so it works for anyone who wants separation or doesn't need to be connected to the rest of the group. A group of siblings owns the house and a couple of them live nearby. One stopped by while we were there to see if we needed anything and offered history of the home, which was really cool. We didn't explore the island much this visit because we were so happy where we were, but I got the sense that the island was more touristy in other parts.

Historic home for a large group

  • 4 of 5

We rented this property for a girls getaway long weekend. There were 10 ladies in our group & this place offered plenty of space for our party. We were very pleased with the location and how flexible the owners were with our arrival and departure times. The home is an older, historic home but it was clean. It is not a 5 star posh hotel if that is what you are looking for but it is a great place for larger groups looking to spend time together. The location on Tybee Island is perfect for sightseeing & the "island feel" we were looking for. It's also a quick drive to Savannah to do the tourist activities there.

Family's Best Week of the Year!

  • 5 of 5

This is the 10th year that we have rented this house for the annual family beach week vacation and no one has ever suggested that we look for a different rental property on Tybee! The house has everything that you need for a great family or large group vacation. The kitchen is well-equipped with modern appliances. There is plenty of space in the house so that you don't feel that you are on top of each other. And the short walk to the beach is very convenient. Don't expect glamour but you wont find a better historic property for the price!!!
