About Jill Lawson
Jill and I have spent most of our life in Minnesota or California, though Jill was born in Canada. We owned a 7 room historic Bed and Breakfast for 16 years. It was a terrific business and it taught us several things. One, if your are not constantly upgrading your property, it turns quickly into a "rental". Also, the sense of being at home, comes from the details...we work on the details. Finally, from the linens to the decor, we aim at providing the best. Jill is a nurse although innkeeping has usurped her attention in her professional life of recent years. She works the Medical tent for Iron Man though. She also has an amazing touch for decorating and the condo is her canvas. We have been retired for 3 years. I am on the Board of the American Swedish Institute. Collecting has always been a passion- art pottery, Midwest regional painters, and vintage Lotus cars. The condo came about because we have loved Mexico for years. We spend 3 months there a year. We walk to the golf course or to Starbucks every morning. We feel blessed and love nothing more than hearing from our guests that their stay in our condo was the best vacation ever.
Jill Lawson purchased this Condo in 2004
Why Jill Lawson chose Zona Hotelera Norte
COZUMEL IS COMPLETELY SAFE! A recent survey by a major newspaper declared Cozumel one of the three safest places in Mexico. It is an island, isolated from the violence seen is some parts of Mexico. It is a family community and protected by wealthy Mexican families, as a place to educate their children. We walk any street at any time of the day or night. Cozumel is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It has not been exploited by hotel culture. It is proudly Mexican and from the weekend Fiestas to the local leaders and citizens, people here love being who they are and where they are.
What makes this Condo unique
The sound of the waves in the evening. Reading. Snorkeling. Catching some rays on the sand. Dinner out at...fabulous restaurants. Walks. Diving. Golfing. Just being together. We hear one thing often, "We had all these plans to be out and about, doing things. But when we got to the condo, we just loved the place so much that, one by one, our plans were just kind of pushed aside. WE JUST LOVED LIVING TOGETHER IN THIS FANTASTIC PLACE!"

Amazing ocean front studio condo!
This condo was perfect for 2! It was very clean, very comfortable, very private. We loved everything about it!
This is a lovely little studio condo in a great location. Our favorite part of staying here was the easy snorkeling access and beautiful view off the back terrace. The size of the place made us feel cramped at times, so we realized how having space does make a difference for us on vacations - so we will likely pay more and choose something larger the next time. Shower water never got warm, which we found out may have been a pilot light issue. Jill is wonderful to work with and compensated us for the situation. Also, loved the little welcome basket when we arrived- very thoughtful! We appreciated the availability of bottled water during our stay, as we used bikes to get around and carry groceries. There is a little convenience store up the road and the Mega further down. Would also second Jill’s recommendation of the Cozumel Bike Rental company.
Thanks for reviewing the studio, Barbara. We, of course normally get fives so we just want to comment. Enough hot water is never an issue. Wish we knew you were having problems, it is so easy to relight the tank. As far as the smallness you experienced, most 2 bedrooms in Cantamar are double the price. Most reviewers consider value in reviewing and find the studio exceptional and rare, as an oceanfront option.
We had a fantastic time in Cozumel and absolutely loved your little condo at Cantamar. The location was ideal for us in many ways; just far enough from town to walk, steps away from our scuba diving pick up, and quiet. We really appreciated the thorough list of places to eat, things to do, and not to do, and being welcomed by one of the owners during our stay. When we were at the condo we spent most of our time on the patio, as the view was beautiful overlooking the ocean and the pool. It was perfect for 2 people and we hope to return. Thank you so much. Lynne and Taras.
Clean and comfortable retreat!
The condo met all of our needs for our visit to Cozumel. Great snorkeling right off the property. Nice pool to relax. Poolside chairs available in either sun or shade. Close enough to walk to town. No rental car needed. Taxis readily available if you wish. Things we enjoyed while visiting: Scuba - especially enjoyed the wall dive Columbia Deep, scooter trip around southern end of island, Fish & shrimp tacos at Caribe Burger (small, local dining option on street one block south of main square building marked "Rolex". About three blocks in on left side.
We felt safe the whole time while in the condo and on the island.
Cantamar 303 & 302: A Piece of Paradise!
We love our time at Cantamar where we spent 4 weeks in the #302 Studio and 1 week in the 2 bedroom #303 2-bedroom condo next door, in February/March, 2019. This was our fourth time in there. We plan to return in 2020.
The location in the northern part of the Island is excellent, right on the pedestrian/cycling path, a very clean, safe and quiet area. It faces the sea, away from the road and street noise.
Each unit is well equipped and the kitchen supplies enabled us to prepare full meals. Each unit is colourfully and tastefully decorated.
The pool and beach areas are great. The whole Cantamar complex only has 11 units and we never had a problem finding a comfortable spot on the beach or by/in the pool: often we were the only ones there! Over the course of our stay, we met many interesting and personable fellow guests, several of whom have become friends.
The studio is on the second floor and offers panoramic views of the ocean, sunsets and the west coast of the Mayan Riviera 20 kilometers away across the Caribbean Sea. There is always something to see from the balcony, including cruise ships, the evening “pirate dinner cruise” and dive and fishing boats. The Murphy bed and sleeping arrangements are comfortable for us. The linens, towels and personal laundry are done and the unit cleaned three times each week. Thanks to clement weather, good air circulation and our acclimatization, we never used the A/C during our stay.
We can unqualifiedly recommend this 2 bedroom condo overlooking the Caribbean Sea where we spent a week with our daughter and 20 month old grandson in March, 2019. Having an onsite washer and dryer was great. The family had a great time in the beach-pool area and on the walking path including visiting the cats at the nearby marina at Puerto de Abrigo at 7:00 a.m. with the toddler.
Finally, we must mention how accommodating and responsive we found the owners, and the onsite/on Island Cantamar staff. Laura and Eduardo Castillo are both knowledgeable and helpful anytime one has a local inquiry or issue. The Lawsons are wonderful hosts. One is made to feel like friends rather than a customer.
