Red Oak Hollow is absolutely the best value on the mountain and autumn is the best season for enjoying the outdoors. Sewanee alumni call today for Homecoming 2016.
If you want to unplug...we just added two side by side hammocks (from Jamaica) down by the pond site. Best quality hammocks , we have ever seen and relaxed in and we had to duplicate that experience. We also added two red poly Adirondacks chairs ,with foot stools and table, right next to the fishing pond. To finish off the experience and nature viewing, we now have a pair of ducks in residence. They are free roaming, flying Muscovy ducks, named Ugg and Peaches, with two baby ducklings (Plum and Cherry) now swimming our ponds.
We are on 30 private acres with three ponds, with catch and release fishing. The front porch of the cottage has a propane barbecue. The back yard is fenced and has a raised garden, with herbs to enjoy. Down by the ponds, there are two park benches around the largest pond. Kids love to fish, especially if they are biting. We have basic fishes poles or bring your own.. Red Oak Hollow only allows Catch and Release, but the sport and tranquility offers ample rewards.
There is a large fire pit with seating down by the ponds. Toast a marshmallow or just enjoy the fire one evening. We supply the kindling and firewood.
Red Oak Hollow estate offers a brand new country style 18 Hole Disc Golf course, (we supply the discs), badminton court, ( we supply the rackets and birdie), horseshoes course, ( we supply the horseshoes), croquet set, catch and release fishing ( we have basic poles and barb-less hooks), canoe (with life preserves) to paddle around one of our three ponds, private walking trail thru our woods ( park bench to stop and rest). All this at no extra cost to you. Not used by the general public, only available for our guests. This is a private estate.
Sewanee is famous for it's great hiking trails, abundant wildflowers and wild life. Red Oak Hollow's unique feature is that our estate is large, private, rural and peaceful and yet so close to the campus. Sewanee and St. Andrew's parents and alumni are generous with their accolades and often say ' I wish I knew about this place earlier....why would I stay anywhere else.' Please read our reviews, you'll see why we are the coveted place to stay for all Sewanee events. Red Oak Hollow is just a short drive to the center of The University of the South campus. Enjoy your day on campus and come back to a tranquil mountain retreat. The garden cottage is part of our 30 acres private estate of hardwood trees, fantastic native and butterfly gardens, ponds stocked with catfish, bass and brim, entertaining wildlife and picture perfect wildflowers.
As owners, we live on the property and maintain the cottage and gardens. If you have a question, need directions, looking for a recommendation for hiking or dining, we are here to help.
The cottage is just shy of 1,000 sq feet, with a large living room, complete kitchen, two bedrooms, and a very large bathroom. Each room of the air conditioned cottage is decorated with a country or mountain inspiration. Why rent a couple of motel rooms, when you can have the comfort of a private home on an estate, for a much better price?
The cottage has two bedrooms, each with traditional quilts. For your maximum sleep comfort, a King size sleep number bed is featured in the 'Wildflower' Master Bedroom. This room is decorated with local wildflower photos and 2 tiffany styled lamps.
The Master Bedroom is connected to the Bathroom. The second “The Fox and Fish' bedroom has a set of bunk beds. For privacy and relaxation, each bedroom has a TV.
The large living room has a dual reclining couch, a reclining chair and an upholstered rocking chair. The 30” TV has premium satellite programming. Current popular magazine are on the end tables. Bird and flower books are in the bookcase. A DVD/CD/VCR player is in the living room, along with movies for both children and adult viewing.
The 'Red Chicken Kitchen' seats four and comes complete with a full size refrigerator, electric stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee pot, a full set of dinnerware, dishes, wine opener, pots and pans. The kitchen has a bay window with a garden view. The kitchen is perfect if you wanted to invite your college student for a home cooked meal. The front porch has a propane barbecue. A full size washing machine and dryer complete your needs.
The bathroom is surprisingly large with dual vanities, a separate shower and large soaking tub.
Red Oak Hollow is very kid friendly. For the very little ones, we have an available high chair and pack and play, suitable for sleeping Stuffed animals are on the bunkbeds. The kids bedroom has a 20 plus Disney film collection with a TV with a video player.
As an ambitious Master Gardener, we have created numerous gardens throughout the estate. Our gardens have been considered one of the best displays of native plants on the mountain. A raised bed vegetable garden is in the back yard of the cottage. Go ahead, pick a cherry tomato or snip some sweet basil for your salad.
The flower garden nearest the cottage is the Butterfly Garden, filled with sun drops, butterfly weed, butterfly bush, coneflowers, and pineapple sage. Another garden bed lines the cottage yard, featuring the Southern “Bird Girl”. It is full of Shasta daisies, dahlia, hollyhock and stargazer lilies.
There are two large native gardens, highlighted by spring daffodils, trilliums and the “elusive Cinderella of the wild flower world”, pink lady’s slippers. The flowering trees are plentiful with dogwoods, crepe myrtle, crap apple and red bud.
We have a bluebird trail, with twelve blue bird houses, usually occupied. The pond attracts ducks, cranes and our returning pair of Canadian geese. Wildlife is a way of life here.
Red Oak Hollow has been selected for the 2015 Best of Sewanee Award in the Lodging category by the Sewanee Award Program.

We live on a mountain within a college community.
It doesn't get better than this!
We have had guests love our place and their stay here ,so much they have bought their own property in Sewanee, to build their dream home.
Mesha purchased this cottage in 2003
Sewanee is not a city, nor a town, it's a village with historic character. It's on top of a mountain, with a thriving private university and prep school. There is always something cultural to do and the hiking here is world class.
We are happy to secure restaurant reservations at some of our favorite places.
We have maps and guide books on hand to point out the best hiking trails, with waterfalls and interesting rock formations.
The fun and relaxation of fishing is available right on our ponds. Down by the ponds are two park benches with tables, a picnic table, hammock, swinging chair and fire pit.
Red Oak Hollow is our little heaven on earth. Actually, 30 acres is a lot of heaven. We absolutely love the unique community of Sewanee and we are proud of what we have been able to create on our property in 10 short years.
Staying at Red Oak Hollow lets you totally unwind. Nap in the hammock, throw a fishing pole in the pond in the late afternoon. Watch the wild ducks in the morning ,swimming in the ponds.
Walk the gardens and read the tags that identify the flowers. Snip herbs for your salad from the vegetable garden. Stroll down the private country road that cuts thru our woods and cross the wild flower meadow.
Rent a bike and ride thru the village of Sewanee. Hike the Perimeter Trail and see an outstanding biodiversity of plants.
Catch the gorgeous views from Morgan's Steep and Green's view.
Hike Shake Rag Hollow, an old growth forest and delight in wildflowers of one of the most magicial hikes on the Cumberland Plateau.
Just wanted to thank you for another wonderful stay; just wish it could have been longer. I love the beauty, peace and quiet there. The new room and patio are great ! I agree with all on your blog. I am really looking forward to our 2 stays in Oct and will surely miss them when Matt has graduated. But I will know where to stay when back in the area.
I just caught up with all on your blog and really enjoyed it. I like being able to see what is going on there and hearing what is new in the area. - Thanks again, Carol
Red Oak Hollow was the perfect spot for both my son and I. Both the home and the property are lovingly cared for. Mesha offered us the pick of anything we could use from her herb and vegetable garden. The kitchen is more the adequately equipped as well as the rest of the home. We were there for a wedding which kept us busy so, it was nice to retreat to Red Oak to reinvigorate and enjoy the tranquility. Red Oak Hollow is definitely on my favorites list. Thanks Mesha and Tim for making this such a peaceful stay.
As a scrappy teenager, I found staying here was an absolutely outstanding experience! I came with my mother and grandmother to visit and I must say we were all impressed. The cottage was very comfy, making you feel right at home the moment you walked in. The area around it is peaceful, which makes for a perfect way to start the day. Not only that, if you're a nature person, there are several ponds to visit, and trails to walk.
Different activities are provided for, making the whole experience feel like a classic summer camp. Though this place actually has AC. Not only were the owners friendly and welcoming, but everything they had from the signs to the statues tied everything together. All and all, my family and I had an outstanding visit, and we can't wait to come back!
Two girlfriends and I needed to get away for a quiet night and we found Red Oak Hollow. Mesha was really great to work with us as the trip was very last-minute, but she made it work. Everything was as pictured. The cabin was very clean and cheerful, the property was lovely, and Mesha was a helpful and attentive host. We had a very relaxing time and would definitely stay here again.
This review is long overdue. Our daughter attended the writing conference at Sewanee. We stayed at Red Oak Hollow for three nights and had an amazing time. The owners made us feel so welcome, they even brought worms for my son to use for fishing. My husband used a fly rod and caught several fish. Our son had great luck fishing. The property is gorgeous and the owners shared their beautiful garden with us. It is very clean and we felt totally safe and very peaceful. I hope our daughter goes to college at Sewanee so that we can stay at Red Oak Hollow regularly.
My husband and I are alums of the University and were on the mountain to enjoy a football game and take our daughter to the Fall Preview Weekend on campus. This was our first stay at Red Oak Hollow and we had a wonderful weekend!
The cabin was perfectly suited for a family with two children. There were plenty of activities for the kids - both inside and outside. We just happened to hit the first weekend of fall leaf splendor - gorgeous!
The sleep number bed in the master bedroom was amazing. The kids enjoyed the bunk beds, too. We found everything we needed for a relaxing weekend!
Thank you for an excellent stay!
Our son and daughter-in-law were in school at Sewanee and we went to visit them for Easter. Easter at All Saints in Sewanee is quite beautiful. Red Oak Hollow was perfect for our family. The home and grounds were beautiful. While a bit cool that weekend, we still enjoyed walking around the grounds and lake. The views are so tranquil. We will definitely recommend this property to anyone who visits the area.
