About the property

Villa, 5+ Bedrooms, 3 Full Baths (Sleeps 4 - 10)

Over the past 30 years, travelers have enjoyed an authentic Italian experience staying at our lovingly maintained 18th Century villa and ancestral home, "Casale Sonnino". The Villa is set amidst thirty acres of working vineyards and olive groves and is built upon 2000 year-old roman foundations which can be viewed in the basement. The property is located in Monte Porzio Catone, 4 kilometers from Frascati and 40 minutes from the heart of Rome by car or train.

The Casale Sonnino sleeps up to ten - six to eight persons most comfortably - in five plus bedrooms (4+ upstairs, 1 ground floor) and three full baths (2 upstairs, 1 ground floor). The upstairs bedrooms have queen beds or they can be split apart for singles sharing a room. Also upstairs is a very large terrace with chairs, a tent pergola for meals and a pingpong table. The panoramic view stretching from Rome to the Apennine mountains is spectacular, especially when sharing a bottle of Frascati wine and appetizers at sunset.

On the ground level, there is a 20' x 40' living/dining room for gathering and dining. featuring a grand fireplace and chandelier, A smaller TV and breakfast room, with southern light looks out to the garden. The vintage-style country kitchen has marble top table in the center and updated appliances including a stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and toaster oven. There is an extensive collection of pots and pans, kitchen tools and spices for your use.

Outside the front door: In nice weather, the best place for a delightful meal is under the grape pergola in the garden by the vineyard.

A continental breakfast is included in your rental price as is daily housekeeping (excluding Sundays) . For other meals, you can shop locally and prepare your own feasts in the fully equipped kitchen, have a gourmet dinner or two catered by us or a local chef, dine out at one of the many favorite local restaurants or discover a local trattoria on a day trip. In Italy, there are so just so many places to eat and wines to love!

How long does one stay at the Casale and see Rome? If you only have a week, we recommend: 2 or 3 days in Rome, 2 days of day-tripping and the rest exploring the nearby Castelli Romani towns of Castel Gandolfo, Ariccia, Nemi, Frascati and Grottaferrata.

About Claire Treves Brezel

My brother George and I are co-owners of the Casale Sonnino. We grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, children of Italian immigrants. After college and graduate school and 14 years in corporate marketing and product development, I left to be a stay-at-home mom to my two now college-student children. During this time, I dipped my toes in screenwriting and helped my mom Clotilde Sonnino Treves manage the family farm and villa rental - Casale Sonnino - in Italy. In the mid-80's, the Casale was among the first vacation-rentals, offering warm hospitality and we had an internet web site before Homeaway even existed!

Now George and I are 5th generation owners and we can't let go of our family history and the wonderful extra virgin olive oil that our mother, a fantastic cook and knower-of-all things Italian, passed on to us. As we have learned from our many appreciative guests and olive oil fans, a unique legacy, lifestyle and great food is meant to be treasured and shared. We strive to maintain the house, the spirit, the soul of our ancestors and the values of a bygone era. We hold our agrarian roots near and dear even as Rome's lights twinkle in the distance, George manages the vineyard/olive grove operations and hospitality at the Casale and I run the web site, marketing - book guests and sell olive oil - here at my home on the North Shore of Long Island . One day soon...I will write the movie!

Claire Treves Brezel purchased this villa in 1883

Why Claire Treves Brezel chose Castelli Romani

My brother George and I are fifth generation co-owners of the “Casale”, our ancestral home, located in near Frascati on the outskirts of Rome. Our great, great grandfather began purchasing land in the area in 1883 and the farmhouse in 1900. In 1948, our grandparents transformed the farmhouse into the elegant family home which stands today. Though down to 25 acres from the original 100, we continue to cultivate grapes that are sold to a local Frascati DOC winemaker and produce delicious, top quality extra virgin olive oil from our 728 trees. We export the olive oil to the US where I sell it directly to family and friends and by passa parole - word of mouth.

A Great Family Christmas vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks at Casale Sonnino over Christmas and New Year. George was very accommodating for our large family. We had a wonderful breakfast every morning and enjoyed some lovely days lounging around the house. We were visiting family and hosted a Christmas eve potluck and a catered New Years Eve party. George and crew made the room beautiful, purchasing a large Christmas tree, which future guests can enjoy. And he even bought some fireworks for midnight on New Years eve. The New Years eve view from the terrace was amazing and so much more than we expected! We could see the fireworks all over Rome, absolutely stunning! The dinner was catered by the restaurant and winery next door, Agriturismo Palotta. Both the food and wine were delicious. We even visited the winery for a tasting prior to the party to choose our wines. The service staff were very accommodating at the house. We had many lovely evenings cooking in the kitchen. The olive oil is delicious and lucky for us they were just getting that year’s oil ready. So we bought a couple litres to bring home. I would absolutely return without hesitation! I would love to go in the summer sometime to enjoy the gardens and the outdoor areas.

Modern comfort, old world charm, ideal location!

  • 5 of 5

We adored our stay at the Casale, from the comfort of the beautifully restored villa surrounded by olive groves and vineyards to its ideal location on the outskirts of Rome.

The house is a gem, modern comfort with old world charm, and is ideally located between Rome and Frascati. The rooms are adorned with family history, and we were able to lounge in each one as a family or when someone needed their own space, there was definitely a room to find! The rooftop is charming with a pool table, games and lounge chairs to take in the sun or watch the stars at night.

George is a marvellous host and a source of great tips for touring the area, both close by (like Frascati and the incredible volcanic lakes) and further afield (Tivoli and beyond).

Frascati is a beautiful town located 10 minutes away, known for its delicious regional white wines that we truly enjoyed with amazing cheese, charcuteries plates and of course, pasta dishes and pizza! (Frascati also has a large 24h supermarket which is extremely convenient.) In the sweltering summer, we opted for a one-day-in-Rome and one-day-discovering-the-area schedule, and it worked out very well for us. We loved going to the crystalline Lake Albano for a day of rest and relaxation, following a day of sightseeing in Rome. It was a perfect combo!

Casale Sonnino is a glorious vacation destination!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful Roman holiday! The Casale Sonnino is a glorious vacation destination. It offers spacious accommodation in the picturesque hills outside Rome. It's close enough to take the metro in from a nearby town to explore the city without driving and parking woes. Every morning, we were greeted with a huge continental breakfast prepared by the friendly Casale staff who asked happily do laundry daily. After breakfast, we either ventured into Rome or took day trips. A friend of the owner, Simeone Ricci, offered excellent guided adventures specifically created to our wishes. We definitely would never have found intriguing locations like these on our own. Some of the trips included Campo Imperatore, St. Stefano di Sassiano, Mount Livata, Castelli and more. Spending time at the Casale was a treat unto itself. Walks through the olive trees and vineyard, reading in the garden or exploring the underground tunnels and learning the history of the Casale was wonderful.

Motto Bene

  • 5 of 5

April 2015 – Casale Sonnino

Our group just returned to the states after a wonderful holiday in Italy. Casale Sonnino family villa is truly magnificent and was the perfect choice for us...it was truly elegant and evocative of another place in time. George was the penultimate gentleman and host and made us feel welcome during our stay.

There are wonderful restaurants nearby the villa. The ladies at the house were so solicitous of our needs and were ever ready to assist us in the mornings.

When we returned home we were filled with happy memories of Monte Portzio Catone, Frascati, Assisi, and Rome, of course. Thank you so much for all your assistance as we planned our vacation. We would love to return in the future, not only to see the beautiful countryside and olive groves but to visit once again with our new little friends Dylan and Mr. Chips!

When we left Spring had arrived in Italy...it was sunny and warm.

Thank you again...we look forward to returning in the not too distant future.

An outstanding location for a family reunion

  • 5 of 5

We rented Casale Soninno for a week for a family reunion to celebrate my wife's 80th birthday. We had our four sons and their wives to stay. We all had a fabulous time. It was the perfect place, a beautiful villa in lovely grounds near enough to be able to visit Rome plus many other interesting sites such as Ostia Antica and Tivoli. Because of its being above the plain we could return to the comfort of the villa with its outstanding view over Rome including St. Peter's dome. Giorgio, the manager, provided us excellent service including three delicious dinners, one being a wonderful party together with a birthday cake to which my wife's relations and Italian friends were invited. Altogether we had an outstanding time at Casale Soninno.

Amazing!!! Great for a group.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the Casale. We went with 4 generations of our family and it was suitable for everyone. Our young boys especially loved exploring the grounds with their new best friends Dylan (the dog) and Mr. Chips (the cat). We also loved how convenient it was not only to go into Rome but to exploring other villages and there is a great lake nearby as well. The family especially enjoyed our last night dinner that the Casale organized for us, it was like our own private restaurant.

The Casale Sonnino is conveniently located off of the Rome-Naples Highway A-1 which runs Southeast of the city. It takes 30 minutes to get into Rome-Termini station (Central Rome) by the train at Colle Mattia, a station stop less than 2 kilometers from our Villa or Frascati, 4 kilometers from the Casale. There is parking for your rental car at Colle Mattia or Frascati as well as ample parking at the Casale for you and your family/friends. The Casale is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, and is privately located at the end of a long cobblestone driveway and wrought iron gate. Our small town, Monte Porzio Catone is a 1K walk (up a hill, sorry!) from our gate. There you can find restaurants, your cappuccino and breakfast danish, gelato, pizza fresh out of the oven, bakery, restaurants, ATM machine, a playground for small children and small grocery and vegetable stores.

Frascati is a thriving regional center and tourist destination and so has more restaurants, stores, bakeries, coffee bars and any other services that you might require.

Must See: All the historic sites and museums in Rome and the Vatican City. Also: Tusculuum, Ostia Antica, Tivoli Gardens and Villa D'-Este, Hadrian's Villa.

Notes:
The Casale is surrounded by 11 hectars of working vineyards and olive groves where we produce our own award-winning extra virgin olive oil. We rent the Villa to travelers who wish to stay on an authentic family-run vineyard while visiting Rome and touring central Italy from Florence to the Amalfi Coast. It's a great home base, with George as your host and our friendly local staff providing touring and restaurant tips/guidance, daily continental breakfast and housekeeping. We can provide a terrific tour guide and driver in your rental car - the itineraries are as varied as there are places to see and things to do in Italy! We cater dinners, parties and celebrations at the Casale. We tailor the menu to your taste and budget. We can also arrange winery tours, cooking and watercolor painting classes and truffle hunting expeditions. Don't forget to ask for a tour of the Roman foundations under the house and the system of caves beneath the vineyards.
