We are a romantic couple who love the beach and small historic seacoast villages. We live in a lovely historic town in Massachusetts however love the coast and the milder temperatures of Bristol, Rhode Island. We have built several homes in the past and I am an interior decorator and we loved the challenge of taking a historic home on the ocean and creating a home away from home by the sea. It's a hard place to rationalize owning if you don't share it with others. There's no place like the beach!
Dee purchased this cottage in 2004
We were fortunate enough to have an opportunity to buy a lovely 'Nantucket' style rose cottage on the beach in a private, quiet neighborhood in Bristol, RI. This quaint town is still a treasure that no one has found! We are far enough removed where we are located in Bristol but near every amenity. We don't have to take a plane or a boat to get to our beach house. It is an easy drive for us and most people to get here. There is so much to do and not the hustle and bustle that some of the more tourist towns can have. The unique restaurants, antique stores, boutiques and parks are within our bicycles reach! We get up in the morning and look at the red sunrise over the ocean as we sip our morning coffee and our neighborhood heron greets us on the beach.
The sound of the ocean lapping against the shore in front of the house is mesmerizing. The spectacular view of the sailing boats billowing by the house is why we named it Bristol Sails. The Swans that visit are all gentle reminders you are on the beach and can enjoy the peaceful life here. Stay home all day and enjoy it in flip flops, cook outside and enjoy the outdoors or get ready to adventure everyday to a newly discovered spot in Bristol or neighboring towns. Unique treasure hunting at the local antique or upscale consignment shops is fun or taking in a Polo match, golfing or picnics in Colt State Park are fantastic!
We enjoyed our stay so much I hated to leave. It is so adorable. It is decorated beautifully. I loved the landscaping with all the flowers. It was very comfortable. I can't say enough about it. The welcome platter was so appreciated. We didn't have to go out to shop till the next day. The listing and pictures described the cottage so accurately. Thank you so much Dee for sharing your cottage with us. I would highly reccomend staying there.

This secluded, perfect beach cottage is even better than the pictures depict. The house is beautiful and comfortable. The view is fantastic. We got used to getting up and watching the boats and wildlife every morning. The owner provided helpful information about nearby activities and restaurants. She even stocked the refigerator with dinner and breakfast for the day we arrived! We intended to visit nearby sites, including Boston and Providence, but found it very hard to leave the sea. Restaurants in Bristol were great. We would recommend this to anyone and hope to come back one day.
Merry Christmas, Dee, and thank you!!! Cozy cottage, very pretty and comfortable -- We are loving it in winter, with just enough snow to charm us Californians and give us a a taste of New England white Christmas. . . On the day we arrived Dee left us a platter of delectable snacks -- cheeses, fruit, pita and hummus, and sweets -- which we happily consumed as our first meal here at the cottage. (And a Christmas tree on the porch, complete with lights. . .) We are cooking and baking some, exploring the neighborhood, including a multitude of charming historic towns and coastal sights, enjoying the local restaurants, and have made trips to Providence and Boston, both easy to reach from here., to see our children and the Museum of Fine Arts . . and simply settling in for cozy times here in the cottage. The beds are divinely comfortable, or am I just more relaxed and happy than usual? I love the stark beauty of the silvery grey water, bare trees, snow on the shore across the inlet, snow on the litte patch of lawn out back, with bird footprints, and the quiet. We have a few more days left, I am happy to say. . .
My husband and I just spent four very relaxing days enjoying this beautiful little cottage and it's views. The interior is immaculate, well appointed and tastefully decorated. The owner had provided a great deal of information about the area attractions and restaurants both at the cottage in a binder and on the telephone the week before our stay. She also provided us with her telephone number in case we had any questions while we were at the cottage. When we arrived we were delighted by a large platter of fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats and crackers which had been left for us by the owner. We were impressed by her frendliness and attention to detail. We enjoyed going through some of the shops in Bristol and walking along the beach at the lighthouse in Little Compton as she had suggested. I would highly recommend this enchanting cottage to anyone. We loved the entire experience.
We stayed at the cottage in August - if was beautifully decorated inside and outside landscaping was as lovely as the picture. The pictures don't do it justice. The cottage had everything we needed. It is right on the water - and has a comfortable screened in porch overlooking the water - a perfect place to relax. The owners were extremely easy to work with and left us delightful treats to enjoy - very accomodating.
I have had good experiences with my VRBO rentals - this one was exceptionally good.
Bristol Sails Cottage is perfectly located on its own private neighborhood beach (quiet and tranquil) in the quaint seaside village of Bristol, RI, surrounded by the ocean! Celebrate the best of living on the ocean in our romantic cottage with its scented seaside garden patio, rose covered arbors and flower boxes spilling with petunias! Great for dining alfresco or just lounging on our cushy padded chaise lounge chairs 4 feet above the beach! Our seaside gardens allow the ideal setting for the display of sculpture and ornamental plants. The heart of living seaside alfresco is our rose covered victorian porch that is the interaction of inside and outside letting the fresh sea air in! Being just four steps from the beach is what I love the most here! Enjoy the good things in life like a fresh lobster boil dinner and relax to the outdoor sounds of seabirds and the lull of the waves! Swish! Swish! Swish! Throw one of our poles in and fish from shore, snorkel, shell or walk the beach. Anchor yourself to the shore and float on our new floaties all day while sipping your lemonade!
In town you can walk hand in hand down the cherry tree lined streets of this picturesque seaside village and stop at our local boutique shops like The Knotty Dog (my favorite), Alfreds Antiques, Kate & Company, Jackies Loft and The Foolish Fox.
Fresh seafood abounds here in local restaurants like 'The Lobster Pot' or 'Persimmons' and 'Quitos Fishmarket and Restaurant. Breakfast at 'The Bee Hive' on Franklin Street where fresh local produce is used to produce their fantastic fare. Some of their yummies are home made scones, egg and cheese filled breads, cinnamon french toast and homemade granola. My favorite meal here is Chef Eli's homemade bread made open faced with poached egg, fresh shucked peas, (shucked that morning) al dente tri colored carrots with a thin cheese glaze.
Our favorite pastoral coastal drive is from our Bristol Sails Cottage to Little Compton stopping at Tiverton Four Corners (a small artisan village) where you can stop at an adorable french bakery and enjoy handmade chocolates, french croissants, sandwiches or The Milk and Honey Shop for fabulous gourmet cheeses, Grey's Homemade ice cream is next door and all within steps of each other.
Then onto Sakonnet Vineyards for a wine tasting and end at a private beach with a beautiful view of a lighthouse! Not far away is Newport where you can take in a two hour sail on the Adirondack which will take you along the coastline to view Seacoast mansions. Walk the famous 'Cliff Walk' and view the Newport mansions up-close.
