Tips for excursions:
To all those who want to explore the varied surroundings we recommend visiting Syracuse.
Sicily’s once most important town still fascinates you today by its extraordinary location.
Small but lovely…
Marzamemi is a real insiders’ tip for all those who want to get to know the land and the people.
The lovely town at the seaside is, on the one hand, an authentic fishing village with colorful fishing boats; on the other hand, it is also a hip meeting point of the locals at the weekends. On Sundays, Italians really dress up and love to gather in the large piazza after church to chat about anything and everything.
The nice restaurants with excellent dishes of fresh fish and the small cafes and bars invite not only locals to spend a relaxing day at the seaside.
Fortunately, mass tourism has not yet invaded the southeast of Sicily. The few tourists who stop by are fascinated by the charm and the authenticity of the area.
Stroll through the lovely alleys, passing bright stone façades, and give in to the feeling of a summer never ending.
Seaside resort of San Lorenzo:
After strolling through Marzamemi, you should stop at the seaside resort of San Lorenzo, 2 km off, to take a refreshing swim in the sea.
In July and August, this resort does attract many locals and thus is a pretty lively place, but during the other months you can enjoy the crystal clear sea to the full.
The gently sloping and fine sandy beach is also ideal for families with children.
Untainted nature at Oasi di Vendicari:
Established in 1974, the nature reserve of Oasi di Vendicari, which borders on the seaside resort of San Lorenzo, represents a unique coastal landscape. Dunes, woodland and the so-called 'patani', several lagoon lakes, shape the reserve.
Man-made hiking trails run across this area of ca. 1500 ha. With a bit of luck you can watch flamingos, cranes, pelicans and pond turtles – a great experience for the young and young-at-heart.
