About The Owner

I am a mother of 2 sons (7 and 4). My husband and I rent our cottage which is located within the grounds of our home. Both my husband and I have been involved in international business and offer a vacation rental that meets our own exacting standards.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2004

Why The Owner chose Stroud district

The vacation rental was previously a disused barn which offered itself for sympathetic development into a holiday rental. It has enhanced our property as it is situated within the grounds which are themselves situated within an 'area of outstanding natural beauty'. The cottage benefits from it's own private garden, separate from us. We are 'on hand' if you need us but respect your privacy if you don't!

What makes this cottage unique

Situated within the beautiful and historic Cotswolds with easy access to the famous sites of the area. The cottage is situated within a very quiet village with many walks through outstanding countryside. Proximity to the Roman towns of Bath, Cheltenham and Cirencester as well as good train links to London (1.5 hours). The cottage guarantees a fantastic nights sleep as we pride ourselves on the quality not only of our furniture but of our beds and bed linen. We are also on-site and are able to provide local knowledge and assistance during peoples' stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a lovely one week stay at Well Close Cottage. We loved the village feel of the place, especially next to the village school where we could feel part of the community. This is a perfect spot to drive to Bath (1 hr), Bibury (45 mins), Upper and Lower Slaughter (1 hr).

lovely cotswold cottage in walking country

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is exactly as described on the web site. The layout is unusual because the bed rooms are down stairs and the living room above, which adds to the charm. It is very well equipped and comfortable and only a few minutes walk from the local shop and the Butchers arms pub run by a very friendly Irish man. The pub does get busy so booking for Sunday lunch or dinner is very much recommended. Jayne the owner of the cottage lives next door so is on hand for any problems or advice. The village is at the centre of many footpaths and the cotswold way is easily linked up with. We had a lovely few days despite the changeable weather.

Wonderful base for exploring the Cotswolds

  • 5 of 5

This was a very comfortable cottage down the lane from a gourmet pub in a beautiful tucked-away village. It's a great base for walks, hikes, drives and sight-seeing. (Try to stick to main roads instead of relying on GPS/sat-nav to get there).

Stay here for an amazing "local" experience!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is picture perfect! It is located right across from the school on the main Oakridge Lynch road, so that helps with the driving directions. You do have to travel on some small one way, high hedged roads to get here, fyi. Beautiful but tricky. We loved the accomodations and it was spacious for our family of 4. Plenty of pillows, linens and a huge bathroom which I totally appreciated. The kitchen was delightful for preparing our tea and breakfasts, the big bonus room with sofas and a working tv/dvd player helped us lounge comfortably in the evenings after a busy day of touring. I love the owner's sense of style and detail decorating the cottage- I felt right at home.

Waitrose grocery in Stroud was very good for obtaining supplies, but Kim's shop in the village was awesome. Well stocked and a quick walk. The Bell at Sapperton was one of the best meals of our entire trip but also The Butcher's Arms was GREAT too, walking distance, and we loved the owner, who was very friendly and fun to talk to. Great food all around. I read that Jayne will also prepare meals for you for a fee, this was a great idea and I'd do that in the future!

For us, the one of the best parts of this cottage experience was meeting locals and being in the heart of the Cotswolds. We met the blacksmith Bill, who showed us his amazing work space and shared his story of growing up in Oakridge Lynch. We loved meeting the owners and their polite sons and could have chatted with them all day! We took several day trips: to Bourton on the Water (based on Blacksmith Bill's recommendation) and we loved it, especially the Motor Museum. We took the train from Kemble to Bath and that was outstanding. We spent an afternoon exploring Cheltenham and visited Ian Coley Sporting grounds. We found Bibury to be picturesque plus we found great tea houses in Stow on the Wold- BUT- nothing beat staying in the cottage and reminding yourself every day you were in the heart of it all! You didn't even have to leave! Thank you Peter and Jayne :)

Lovely Cottage, perfect for family walking holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Jayne's cottage, which is absolutely charming and very well looked after. It was a great spot for lots of walks in the surrounding country-side, pub lunches, and just hanging out on the garden patio in the sun. (The cottage is well-stocked with books, games and puzzles).

There is a great playground beside the Village Hall, a very handy little shop with all of the basics you'll require for breakfast etc. We recommend reserving at the Butcher's Arms in advance, as they get very busy on the weekends in particular.

And do make sure you get very detailed driving instructions, as the charming village is a maze of nameless lanes and it took our taxi driver a lot of false-turns to find it.

Cotswold Cottage Like a Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family recently completed our first European vacation, which included France and Italy, and we finished our 3 week adventure with a short stay in the Cotswolds at Well Close Cottage. As we turned off the Stroud Road towards Frampton Mansell, then on towards Oakridge Lynch and the cottage, we quickly began to understand what attracts so many visitors to the area. Driving past the rolling hillsides of grazing sheep and horses, moss-covered stone walls, thatched roofed cottages, little villages dotting the countryside and turning on to increasingly narrow lanes, we were stunned by the breathtaking scenery. After a short ramble through the village, we came to the cottage, and instantly felt at home. The patio area door leads to the kitchen, well equipped and everything exactly where you would expect. The bedrooms are large and furnished with closets and chest of drawers and very comfortable beds and bedding, proven out by how late we all slept. The large bath has a rain-shower head and huge towels. The upstairs dining/lounge area is very large and comfortable, with 2 full sofas, SkyTV, DVDs, and loads of books, maps, magazines, and puzzles. We arrived a bit late for shops, but our hostess, Jayne recommended the local pub, The Butcher's Arms, which was a 10 minute walk and served great food and drinks. The next morning, we visited Kim's Shop a few blocks away and found a very well stocked shop with many more selections than expected and picked up everything we needed plus. With the fridge stocked up, we took to the fields and forest for some walking, and ventured by car to Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-on-the-Marsh, Woodstock and Blenheim Palace, all within a short drive from Oakridge Lynch. We finished off our stay with a last night's dinner at The Crowne Inn, where, like Butcher's Arms, the cuisine rivals any we had on our trip, the view included a collie herding sheep in the field across the lane and a gorgeous Cotswold sunset. Our one regret is that we couldn't stay longer. We look forward to returning soon, as so many in the Well Close Guest Books seem to do. Thank you, Jayne and Peter, for the lovely stay! We can't wait to do it again!

A delightful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

After a hectic week in Dublin and London, "our" little cottage in the Cotswolds couldn't have been better! Located in the SW corner of the Cotswolds, Wells Close cottage is a comfortable, well equipped home away from home. The village is fun to walk about, with friendly folks happy to chat with visitors. The owners live right next door, which made it easy to get questions answered ( where do we get charcoal for the grill?), and yet they respected our privacy completely.
