Guestbook comments from the owner

"Hideaway" is a truly appropriate name. We had a wonderful stay in your cozy cabin. This is a special part of the world and our hike along the Arnold Rim Trail at sunset made a perfect end of our trip. Thank you for sharing this cute cabin.

Country home in remote setting

  • 3 of 5

Stayed two nights in the Murphys Hideaway home for a weekend getaway with two girlfriends. We arrived to a glorious sunset on the deck with a beautiful view of the country side. The house was spacious for three adults with one bedroom downstairs and a loft type setting upstairs with two seperate sleeping quarters. The stairs were a bit narrow and could prove tricky for any guests with physical disabilities. The home is in a remote area which requires a drive on a narrow country road.

I read a previous review about the uncomfortable heat in the home, and I would concur 100% with that statement.

My friends and I are from California and we have experienced our fair share of heat in different parts of the state. But the heat in this house was unbearable at night; the owner provided oscillating floor fans and the rooms had ceiling fans but they provided little relief. I ended up sleeping on the couch downstairs because I could not bear the heat in the upstairs area. Needless to say, we all experienced very poor sleep over the weekend.

Everything you need

  • 4 of 5

We loved the house. The setting was gorgeous. The house had absolutely everything that you need. The rooms were pretty spacious and comfortable.

CONS: No AC. Although, there are lots of fans, we had to cut our vacation a day short because the heat was unbearable and made it impossible to sleep at night. The road from Murphys is horrible!!! Better drive a bit further down on 4 and turn on Avery Sheep Ranch Rd and then on the street of the house.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the kind comments regarding the beautiful setting and furnishings of the house. With regard to Sheep Ranch Road from Murphys, it is a paved country road and one would expect a windy, rural, mountainous road to get to a remote setting which is one of the great appeals of this property. So yes we concur that the Sheep Ranch Road method of access to the property is rural and mountainous albeit faster than the alternate and less windy access via Highway 4 to Averys and to the property from there. With regard to the summer heat in CA at this time of year there's no question that the heat may not be comfortable for some people. From our review of the national weather service data at the time of July 1 and 2, 2017, when it was deemed too warm to sleep, the high for the day was 91 degrees and the low for the day was 57 degrees. At 9:55 PM the temperature was 68 degrees. We understand it could and can be too warm in the house for some to be comfortable sleeping shortly after sunset. The information given to guests right before their arrival encourages those staying in the house during warm periods to help manage possible heat buildup in the house by using the provided blinds and automatic Sunsetter awning during the hottest portions of the day.

Incredible views from a cozy hideaway!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Murphy's Hideaway, and we weren't ready to leave when it was time to go. The house is homey and comfortable, and I loved the antique screen and armoires. The deck and location are really special, and I would highly recommend this rental for those who like to be a bit off of the beaten path because it's a few minutes up the road from Murphy's. Nice, country quiet with lots of deer & bird watching available.

Peaceful stay in a gorgeous countryside

  • 5 of 5

This was a surprising and welcome find. We stayed here for a writer's retreat and to be convenient to the great food and wine tasting in Murphy's, CA. While initially quite hot, after we opened the place up, we found it to be temperate and pleasant for the remainder of our stay. Gerri (the property owner) was very helpful and accommodating, and the property itself was lovely, clean, and well-appointed, just secluded enough to be peaceful while still close enough to town to be convenient. The beds were very comfortable as well. And the night sky was absolutely gorgeous. We will definitely be returning if we get the chance.

Serene, Comfy, Homely, Convenient +++++

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Gerri’s cottage with our toddler twins and parents on our recent visit to the cozy town of Murphy’s.

The cottage was warm, cozy, comfy and a place where we felt at home for the two days that we stayed. It was stocked will all the necessary supplies and there was nothing that was missing as such, except for some sachets of hot chocolate that my husband hunted for throughout the kitchen but failed to find! Also I was secretly hoping for some microwave popcorn, but well, that’s not deemed as a ‘necessity’ either. There was ample seating, linen, sheets and supplies for all of us. Even the bedrooms were ample, although an extra bathroom would have helped!

The place was clean and the size of the house was just perfect for the six of us. Our babies had a blast in the house as well as on the luxury-sized patio deck too.

We had no trouble locating the house, but that was since our GPS was our guiding angel, however you can easily miss the house if you blink and miss the house number board on the road. So do keep an eye out as you near the ‘point of rest’. The drive to and from the town is roughly about 15-20 minutes so you definitely need to plan your lunch and dinner accordingly if you are not keen on spending time having a cook off in the kitchen on a vacation. Definitely not my idea of fun but the kitchen was used well enough to cook meals for our kids and breakfast for our hungry tummies early in the morning!

In case you are coming from north the sheep ranch road from Avery is a little shorter compared to route from Murphys.

The nights may get a little hot or cold depending on the weather but incase it gets hot, you will have a noisy companion in the form of a table fan. Although the noise of the lone fan may cut through the pin drop silence of the night, it may get a little annoying for some, so a tiring day may come to the rescue to help you fall asleep.

Overall we had a beautoful stay and enjoyed some Californian snow hidden away neatly, an hour’s drive away in bear valley. It’s a good relaxing getaway and we definitely recommend Gerri’s House for having some fun (no pun intended)!

Also last but not the least, we forgot one of the most important members of our family back there, but thankfully Gerri was kind enough to post it back to us promptly enough. It was a bedtime lullaby singing doll without which our toddlers refuse to sleep and today since we received it in post we can have a peaceful night!

Owner's Response: Snehal, Thanks for your kind words about your stay at Murphys Hideaway. Since your stay we have installed ceiling fans in all the rooms, very quiet. We often get a very nice breeze coming up the canyon which helps keep the house cooler. We have stayed at this house on 100 degree days and have found the house to stay quite comfortable. We are happy you enjoyed your time there! Best Regards, Gerri

Car: recommended

Located just two and a half hours east of San Francisco, the town of Murphys (founded in 1848 and known as 'Queen of the Sierra') provides an array of activities: historic sites to see, fabulous restaurants, dozens of wineries, outdoor concerts, antique and eclectic shopping, art galleries, golfing, hiking, fishing, biking, rafting, and a live theater. Big Trees State Park, Bear Valley Ski Area and the Alpine Lake recreation area are located nearby. The town of Murphys was listed in the April 2006 issue of Frommers Budget Travel as one of the top 10 coolest small towns.
