About Oliver Baun
I came across the Alpujarras by chance during my journey through Spain in the mid 80's. This was about the same time as the famous book writer Chris Stewart arrived into the area. Years later he published his bestseller ‘Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia (The Lemons Trilogy)’ where he tells all these funny tales and amazing experiences he had in this very region. I also discovered the same sort of authentic unspoiled paradise as he did. Back then, south of Granada was very different to what it is now. The area was impoverished, there were not many cars around but lots of donkeys instead, TV was a novelty and people actually 'lived' in the bars. There was no VAT tax yet and no motorway for hundreds of miles. Granada was a day's journey away and northern Europe a different planet. I was in heaven. I’ve been living in this area for almost 30 years and my children were born and grew up here. I absolutely love this region. Since then, I've been exploring the many things this area has to offer: hiking, skiing, cycling, snorkeling, biking, cooking, climbing and partying, of course.

The place is very rustic, charming, incredible views and so quiet. It's very clean, the bed was comfortable. Having a fire place made it cozy in the evenings. Oliver was very easy to communicate with, Maria is a charming hostess. Fritz, Oliver's dad, met us in town, due to road construction we could not find our way. Last but not least, Pepa and Antonio, the 2 Andalucian Bodega rat dogs similar to Jack Russel terriers, came to visit several times a day, I guess having dog treats had something to do with it. This place is very easy to recommend.
Dear Rob and Beatrice,
We really appreciate that you have chosen our holiday home to spend big part of your long holidays in Europe with us and wanted to say thank you so much for your good rating and the nice and positive words in your review.
Also Fritz wants to send you his greetings and will miss you as good and funny hiking colleagues.
We hope to see you again one day in the future.
All the best to you,
Oliver & Maria
Great secluded and cosy gem with amazing views - highest recommendation
We extended our initial stay with an extra week due to this amazing place. Wonderful area, situated in a small valley, overlooking the Alpujarra mountains and Orgiva, with orange and olive trees scattered around the garden and surroundings.
We had our daily fresh infusion of orange juice, which was exactly what we needed for our hiking day trips. Plenty of circular hikes possible within a 1 hour driving distance. We wouldn't recommend without a (rental) car. Granada is 1 hour away. Supermarket is down in Orgiva, less than 5 minutes by car.
We had our 16 months old daughter with us and she enjoyed the garden and the house as well. A cot was provided for us and the heating was on when we arrived. Winter was a bit too cold for swimming in the pool, but it looks just perfect for the other seasons.
Oliver and Maria are perfect hosts and live in a house at the other side of the garden. Plenty of privacy, and they were there for us if we needed them.
Dear Joachim and Deslé,
Many thanks for your nice and positive review about our holiday property Cortijo el Potro. We are really happy you enjoyed it the way you did.
We wish you all the best and hope to see you again one day in the future.

Great location, awesome property
The property is awesome, very clean, anything you need to spend a relaxing vacation in Orgiva.
Perfect Place for a Relaxing Holiday
We spent a wonderful week staying at Oliver's cortijo. In the lead up to the holiday, Oliver was communicative and helpful, and we arrived to a spotless, spacious and well-equipped and laid-out cottage. We went with our two daughters, and the cottage and property was perfect - much of the days were spent at the pool, and there was a swing which our eldest loved. We bbq'ed just about every night. The house is well located - being out of Orgivia means it feels exceptionally quiet and peaceful, but the town is literally a five minute drive away, so getting groceries etc is no sweat. Orgivia is an okay town - we much preferred exploring the villages further afield. During our time, we spent a wonderful day in Granada (an easy drive of just over an hour) and also did some hikes. Overall, it was a perfect holiday, and we would absolutely recommend staying here.
Relaxing Week in Alpujarra!
For those who enjoy outdoor life and/or a relaxing get away from city, El Potro was a very nice escape in the hills above Orgiva; an eclectic village in the Alpujarra region. Oliver and his family (including his father, Fritz) were very welcoming and available for advice whenever we needed it. Comfortable beds with duvets, fully equipped kitchen, welcome basket ( for cost)and welcoming lighted fireplace was appreciated. We picked our own oranges on the trees surrounding the patio for fresh squeezed orange juice every morning. We enjoyed the views from the villa, the sound of the birds in the morning and evening and the hiking in close proximity. Orgiva itself is a quaint village with very eclectic residents. We frequented Baracha cafe on several occasions where you will get an appreciation of the ecletic nature of the village....also wonderful sweets and lunches. The waiters were extremely friendly and helpful. In fact, on Sunday during our visit when all the food stores were closed we had our minds set of home made spaghetti sauce and needed hamburger. The owner said no problem and sold us some hamburger so we could make our own meal at El Potro....above and beyond service. Our only suggestion is to provide pot holders for use around open flamed stove top and electric oven. We highly recommend this accommodation and hope to return again. Thanks Oliver!! (and Fritz)
Perfect winter holiday
We came here mid-January for 4 weeks to escape the British winter and do some walking. We had a super time - especially as it didn't rain in Orgiva at all! In fact, the weather was bright and mainly sunny. Everything exceeded our expectations, the weather, the scenery, the overall comfort of the cottage and the friendliness of the owner, Oliver, and family. We found the cortijo comfortable, we slept well and the views were amazing (every day, even after a month). The photos don't do the scenery justice. The light and airy downstairs windows make the cortijo feel spacious and there is plenty of outside space (grass area, downstairs shady patio and upstairs sunny terrace and the pool area). It was a delight to pick oranges to drink juice on the terrace looking out at the mountains. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave, electric oven, gas hob and dishwasher and the lounge TV has satellite channels with sport and films. The owner's discrete yet effective support was most welcome. His speed of response was always impressive. In particular he recommended a (mid-Feb) really good drive route for the Contraviesa almond blossom (beautiful). With help from the family we joined a local walking group and were recommended several walks. Overall having the owner discreetly nearby helped to make the holiday more enjoyable.
Buses are cheap - a return trip to Granada, 90 minutes each way, was only 10€ (We pre-booked the Alhambra)
Meteoblue is a good place to get weather info. We found other forecasts misleadingly showing the (much colder) weather forecast for Granada when you look for Orgiva weather.
Plenty of choice of restaurants in town, 3 course (incl. drink) "menu del dia" lunch varied from 10-15€
Would we go back there for another winter holiday? Yes, definitely.
Dear David and Caroline,
Many thanks for your really detailed and comprehensive review.
We can't say enough about how happy we are when our guests spent a really lovely and relaxing holiday in our property and how good it feels for us when we can see that they could recognize and enjoy this amazing beauty and peculiarity of the Alpujarras area.
It's always our pleasure to offer all kind of suggestions, advices and ideas to explore Andalucía deeply and extensively and dive into its culture, leisure offers and beauty.
We can see that you have enjoyed the house and the gardens greatly and have taken care of it with the same affection that we do.
We really enjoyed your visit and highly appreciated your positive and perceptively
comments and hope to welcome you soon again in the future.
All the best,
Oliver and Maria
Cortijo El Potro is settled in a wide and green terraced land of 3.300sqm with lush garden, surrounded by pure and calm nature and the impressive wild landscapes of Sierra Nevada but just 1km away above the town Órgiva.
Although on the border of the cultivated land before it goes into the wild life, it has easy access by car and to town it only takes about 2 minutes to drive and 10 minutes to walk. The view over the village and the whole valley are wide and spectacular.
The closest town, Órgiva, is a very lively, southern Andalusian market-town, picturesquely situated in a large valley in the middle of a wild mountain landscape. Surrounded by rivers, olive and orange groves, it is not a tourist spot, rather a normal village which offers numerous street cafes, bars, restaurants, small shops, a weekly market, an old covert market with fish stalls but also small supermarkets, organic shops, banks, a post office and an emergency hospital.
Orgiva is located in the south-faced slopes of the amazing Sierra Nevada, just 30 minutes away from the beautiful beaches of the Costa Tropical and 45 minutes away from Granada.
Granada is situated just 50km away from the house. Its marvelous and indescribable beauty with breathtaking Moorish-medieval palaces of the Alhambra makes this city one of the true gems of Europe.
Only 7 km away is the traditional spa-town Lanjarón, with its ancient but recently renovated mineral baths offering various wellness services.
The region is characterised by its lush Mediterranean landscape with diverse and fertile vegetation, Europe's cleanest starry sky and over 300 days of sunshine a year.
Blessed with gorgeous weather all year round (including winter time), this region will give you an endless variety of activities and events and whatever the season is, the region remains lively and vibrant with enjoyable activities. All over the year and across the whole region (mountains and coast), restaurants, cafes and beach bars by the sea are open and will give you the chance to experience our gorgeous gastronomical culture and the Andalusian lifestyle.
The very high peaks of Sierra Nevada provide the region with fresh water, which finds its way by the ‘Acequias’ all along into the terraced fields. Acequias are ancient Moorish irrigation channels built into the rocks which cross the hilts all over the region. There are amazing opportunities to explore the stunning nature with pleasurable walks and hiking tours.
So there is Spain's largest ski resort and the one with the sunniest days all over Europe. It offers on an altitude between 2000m and 3400m over 120km of wide slopes. High snow, long and wide pistes, reasonable prices and a surprisingly comfortable atmosphere make Sierra Nevada an exceptional ski destination.
The privileged location of this property gives you the unique opportunity to choose between going skiing in the Sierra Nevada, enjoying the urban and cultural buzz of Granada, sunbathing on the beach, hiking and exploring the local nature or staying in the house having a barbecue in the garden.
The nearly 800-year-long period Moorish and Arab culture has influenced the landscapes of Alpujarra more than any other Spanish regions. The culture of the Arabs is reflected in the architecture, in arts and crafts, music and cooking. But above all, the Arabs cultivated the land, built terraces and irrigation ditches, and brought a variety of plants and fruits from the East that shaped the landscape until the present days. Órgiva is known for its millenary olive trees with their powerful, distinctive gnarled trunks, some which were planted even by the Romans. Today there is in interesting addition to the old traditions an alternative and refreshing culture of artists, craftspeople, organic farmers, organic groceries shops, Arabian tea rooms, halal food shops, yoga and flamenco schools and a Buddhist center.
Spain is a gourmet's paradise and a country that enjoys the pleasure of food.
So varied and colourful the country, so varied and colourful the dishes. The cuisine of the Alpujarra lives from the pure and natural flavor of its autochthonous products due to the unique combination of different altitudes, temperatures, natural waters and microclimates. As such, its cuisine oozes of delicious and vibrant taste. There is a vast myriad of yummy stews including rice dishes similar to genuine paella, air-dried mountain ham, salamis, chorizos, mountain cheese, seafood, fresh vegetables and egg dishes, and other local treats which are considered world-class foods. Many of these specialties are served as tapas (scrumptious nibbles that come for free with a drink – beer, glass of wine or sherry). Enjoy!
