Cortijo El Potro is a spacious two-floor Andalusian villa set in absolute natural tranquility. This is located in a lush and beautiful property surrounded by nature in an authentic Mediterranean setting. The whole property is 3000sqm and is organic-certificated. The garden contains various orange, avocado and centenarian olive trees and many other Mediterranean fruit trees. You can even pick our delicious lemons and oranges and make fresh juice all the way from November to June. There is a playground area as well as a childproof pool area with lawn all around. The villa Cortijo El Potro is characterised by its large kitchen and dining area, the wide living room with the open fireplace and the bright bedrooms – which have one bathroom attached to each. One of the bedrooms has direct access to a large, beautiful sunny terrace with great views of the garden, the valley and the mountains. It is fully equipped on a high standard and offers free WIFI, international and internet TV with video library, heating, air condition, an oven, a dishwasher and an open fire place. Everything is tastefully decorated, fully and well-furnished and very well equipped. The house contains all you need (for example, sharp kitchen knives, large red wine glasses, quality mattresses, bed linens and towels). The shared BIO-swimming pool (Child friendly and healthy Salt electrolysis working, 9x4m plus a shallow toddler section, running from April to November) and the lawn area surrounding are fenced and completely childproof. All of these will certainly guarantee a restful, fun and relaxing holiday.

The lush garden is very child-friendly and it has a playground with a slide tower, tire swing, rocking horse, toys and a football field with one goal.

The property is only 1km away from town (10-15 minutes walking distance) but it still provides with all the quietness and tranquility of pure nature to make your holiday as pleasant and relaxing as possible.

There is another house on the property land (3000sqm) - in one part I live myself, and two other parts of this house I rent to visitors. The pool area is shared by all houses within the property. All holiday houses have their own garden area and barbecue. The distance between the two houses is enough for it to still feel secluded. I live in the ground floor of the other house and will be totally available to help out with any queries, suggestions, ideas and touristic information if necessary.


Over the winter season the house will be heated up with 24 hours in advance to offer a warm and comfortable ambient right from the first day on.

We are able to share our experience gathered here over 20 years and offer you practical tips on activities, hikes, beaches, restaurants, cultural events, ticket reservations (for example, Alhambra tickets), etc. so that you are able to experience the authentic Andalusian culture. In addition, we can organise and facilitate flamenco classes, cooking courses, riding tours, alpine hiking tours and ski days.

We can arrange car hire from Malaga Airport with a very efficient car rental company with excellent services (small company, no queuing, quick and personalized service, no pre-charged petrol, etc.). The service refers to a new air conditioned car with full comprehensive insurance without any excess for two named drivers.

While staying with us, a visit to the Alhambra in Granada is an absolute must. The Alhambra is Europe’s largest and best preserved Moorish (Arabic-Medieval) palace and fortress-building, with unimaginable beauty and refinement. As it is also one of Europe’s most visited monuments.

To visit the Alhambra Palaces we recommend booking tickets ideally with a few months´ notices in advance on the website of the official ticket seller.

To print out the tickets at the ATM of the Caixa Bank here in town or at the Alhambra entrance, it is important to present the same bank card which was used for the online payment.


Our prices are for the entire estate (house, garden and pool) for up to 4 adults. Any extra bedding is charged 10€ per day. But extra bedding for children fewer than 12 is free. The rate includes all utilities such as Wi-Fi, gas, electricity, firewood (during winter), a pantry with the essentials (spices, vinegar, oil, sugar, coffee, tea, cocoa/hot chocolate, spaghetti, canned tomato, dish soap, laundry soap, etc.).

The final cleaning fee of 45€ is for our professional cleaning staff and the 40€ for the complete welcome service set which contains the following:

The preheating of the house 24 hours before check in during the winter months.

Complete clean linen set of quality bedding, bed rugs, towels (hand/facial, bathing, pool/beach), kitchen cloths, sponges, set soap and toilet paper, candles and matches.

A welcome food pack for a first snack with bread, butter, cheese, eggs, olives, yogurt, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, milk, water, juice, beer, a bottle of wine and a fruit bowl ( if you wish, this can be removed and the fee will be reduced 20€).

Personalized reception (Also possible at a meeting point in the village), guiding and introduction to the property.

These fees will be charged upon your arrival only once as one single payment, as it is a unique value, independent of the length of your stay. This will ensure that you will find the property in spotless condition giving your holiday the perfect start.

We provide high chairs and cots with full bedding for free.

We accept PETS only on request and keep in case a security deposit of 150€. Pets must be well educated, never jump on any furniture and not cause any dirty or damage to the property, neither be a nuisance for other people. Unfortunately in no case are dogs of dangerous breeds accepted.

Changeover day is on Saturdays during summer season (start of July to end of August). The rest of the year we can be flexible and arrange for a different day of the week. Check in is from 2pm onwards, check out before 12am or according to arrangement.

Over low season we can offer on bookings of several weeks’ interesting discounts. We can also offer special rates for last minutes bookings.

The price includes 10% VAT and a house insurance including liability.


Our property is a lawful family-tourism business which is registered and monitored by the Spanish Tourism Authority (Consejería de Turismo y Deporte) which guarantees the highest standards for safety, hygiene and quality. It also has the official Andalusian seal ACROCOLOR as an organic olive and orange farm.

The property is located in the heart of the Alpujarras, in the green and lush south slopes of Sierra Nevada with its breathtaking landscapes and mild and sunny microclimate all year round. You will have the perfect opportunity to experience and enjoy the authentic and genuine Andalucia intimately, away from the busy touristic spots. Straight from the house, you can enjoy wonderful walks through the valley or up to the hills. By car, you can have amazing excursions to the high part of the 'Las Alpujarras' with its white and picturesque mountain villages or to the snow-covered peaks of Sierra Nevada. The mountain chain reaches an altitude of 3484m and is replete with a unique wildlife, beautiful rivers and pristine lagoons. The house is only 25 minutes driving distance to the coast, 40 minutes to Granada (one of the most beautiful and lively historic and cultural cities in the world) and little over than one hour to Sierra Nevada ski resorts.

Day trips can include beautiful destinations such as Cordoba, Ronda or Seville, or National Parks like Sierra de Grazalema, Sierra de Cazorla and Cabo de Gata.

Blessed with gorgeous weather all year round (including winter time), this region will give you an endless variety of activities and events: you can ski all the way from end of November to April; olive harvest for our own biological olive oil begins in December; almond flowering bloom starts in January; in March, Órgiva celebrates its patron saint with spectacular fireworks; during Easter time there are impressive marches and processions; the historical and revered orange blossom El Azahar occurs in April, filling the valley with its enticing scents; May is an excellent month to go hiking; Granada’s famous Féria with daily corridas de toros (bullfighting) happens in June; July and August vibrate with cheerful and animated village festivals; in September you can enjoy the warm waters in the stunning Mediterranean beaches; the Harvest Festival of Órgiva happens in early October; and in November the local bars start to light their open fireplaces where people enjoy roasting chestnuts.

About Oliver Baun

I came across the Alpujarras by chance during my journey through Spain in the mid 80's. This was about the same time as the famous book writer Chris Stewart arrived into the area. Years later he published his bestseller ‘Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia (The Lemons Trilogy)’ where he tells all these funny tales and amazing experiences he had in this very region. I also discovered the same sort of authentic unspoiled paradise as he did. Back then, south of Granada was very different to what it is now. The area was impoverished, there were not many cars around but lots of donkeys instead, TV was a novelty and people actually 'lived' in the bars. There was no VAT tax yet and no motorway for hundreds of miles. Granada was a day's journey away and northern Europe a different planet. I was in heaven. I’ve been living in this area for almost 30 years and my children were born and grew up here. I absolutely love this region. Since then, I've been exploring the many things this area has to offer: hiking, skiing, cycling, snorkeling, biking, cooking, climbing and partying, of course. It´s my home and it feels like paradise!

Just a wonderful place to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. The hosts are friendly and welcoming, the village is 10 minutes walk, and the house, pool, garden and view for me (and my 4yr old son) are perfect. We rebooked for this year as soon as we could.

Oliver was a very gracious host. We felt welcome and were very pleased with our accommodations. The house was so warm and cozy, and plenty prepared for the winter. The weather was sunny and comfortable in the day, fresh in the night. The countryside was lush with citrus and olive trees covering the landscape. It was a beautiful, relaxing vacation. When we visit Spain again, we will stay here.

This vacation home is amazing! My wife, I and our 9 year daughter stayed here and had a wonderfully relaxing time sitting by the pool, eating in, going out for dinner. The view of the mountains from the house is great and there are a number of places to sit - right outside the house, the second floor veranda - and enjoy your morning coffee or in the evening several cold beers or a glass of wine. Oliver is a great host and had many suggestions. You're close to the ocean and and a number of other great sights including the Alhambra. I totally recommend this home. Jul 2014

This cortijo was such a relaxing place to stay.

The swimming pool was absolutely perfect for our 2 year old son with lovely wide steps going into it and a shallow section which he could happily paddle about in without us having to constantly keep hold of him. There is also a nice garden area which allowed for games of football and a tyre swing. The owner, Oliver, also very kindly provided our son with a little pedal bike whilst we were there. The location is also wonderful. Again, the views are just spectacular. Granada is a beautiful city and fantastic for tapas. We also had trips to the beach - not many locations can offer you beach, mountain and city all within close proximity and in such a picturesque setting.

On the subject “homeowner lives in the same grounds”: We as homeowners are aware that our guests not only trust about a certain amount of money, it is about something much more valuable; a part of their annual holidays. In this regard, your holiday is guaranteed in good hands. Small, weekly work on the land, such as cleaning the pool and watering are the only moments in which I have to appear briefly in the garden. Otherwise, I take extraordinary care of the preferences of our guests, whether they are looking for some contact rather they prefer a private and peaceful holiday. On the subject of sharing the pool area with other guests: The whole property and its gardens are lush generous and the type of accommodation, the area and the booking process directly with us via the Internet reached guests with a trusting, open, flexible, natural and very easy going profile. Since we rent, we had only very positive experiences in this way.

Perfect winter holiday

We came here mid-January for 4 weeks to escape the British winter and do some walking. We had a super time - especially as it didn't rain in Orgiva at all! In fact, the weather was bright and mainly sunny. Everything exceeded our expectations, the weather, the scenery, the overall comfort of the cottage and the friendliness of the owner, Oliver, and family. We found the cortijo comfortable, we slept well and the views were amazing (every day, even after a month). The photos don't do the scenery justice. The light and airy downstairs windows make the cortijo feel spacious and there is plenty of outside space (grass area, downstairs shady patio and upstairs sunny terrace and the pool area). It was a delight to pick oranges to drink juice on the terrace looking out at the mountains. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave, electric oven, gas hob and dishwasher and the lounge TV has satellite channels with sport and films. The owner's discrete yet effective support was most welcome. His speed of response was always impressive. In particular he recommended a (mid-Feb) really good drive route for the Contraviesa almond blossom (beautiful). With help from the family we joined a local walking group and were recommended several walks. Overall having the owner discreetly nearby helped to make the holiday more enjoyable.


Buses are cheap - a return trip to Granada, 90 minutes each way, was only 10€ (We pre-booked the Alhambra)

Meteoblue is a good place to get weather info. We found other forecasts misleadingly showing the (much colder) weather forecast for Granada when you look for Orgiva weather.

Plenty of choice of restaurants in town, 3 course (incl. drink) "menu del dia" lunch varied from 10-15€

Would we go back there for another winter holiday? Yes, definitely.

Relaxing Week in Alpujarra!

For those who enjoy outdoor life and/or a relaxing get away from city, El Potro was a very nice escape in the hills above Orgiva; an eclectic village in the Alpujarra region. Oliver and his family (including his father, Fritz) were very welcoming and available for advice whenever we needed it. Comfortable beds with duvets, fully equipped kitchen, welcome basket ( for cost)and welcoming lighted fireplace was appreciated. We picked our own oranges on the trees surrounding the patio for fresh squeezed orange juice every morning. We enjoyed the views from the villa, the sound of the birds in the morning and evening and the hiking in close proximity. Orgiva itself is a quaint village with very eclectic residents. We frequented Baracha cafe on several occasions where you will get an appreciation of the ecletic nature of the village....also wonderful sweets and lunches. The waiters were extremely friendly and helpful. In fact, on Sunday during our visit when all the food stores were closed we had our minds set of home made spaghetti sauce and needed hamburger. The owner said no problem and sold us some hamburger so we could make our own meal at El Potro....above and beyond service. Our only suggestion is to provide pot holders for use around open flamed stove top and electric oven. We highly recommend this accommodation and hope to return again. Thanks Oliver!! (and Fritz)

Lovely Setting

The villa is situated in a very secluded beautiful setting. It is close to the town of Orgiva. The villa is very well equipped. We had an issue with larvae in the wood work when we were staying which was surprisingly noisy. This did affect our stay as we were lying awake listening to them gnawing at the wood. The owner is going to deal with them. The villa is quite handy for day trips to Granada.

We have to apologize for the woodworm infestation of some of the wooden beams. We can understand that in a place like here of completely silence and calm, a gnawing larva can annoy indeed and we are definitely taking the issue very serious. Actually we are doing now several treatments every time we have a changeover. Once the season goes quieter and we have a couple of weeks without any bookings, we will proceed with a complete heat treatment all over done by authorized professionals.

A Wonderful, Central Home for Our Month-long Stay

My wife and I spent the month of April 2017 in Cortijo el Potro. We had friends join us for a week of that time and had plenty of room with the second, very nice, bedroom and bath. The Cortijo was was traditional, very well taken care of, clean and in a beautiful spot with nice views to the valley and the mountains...just as advertised. It was close enough to walk into Orgiva (although a bit of an uphill return trip), but far enough away to be rural and quite. Everything was in top working order, including the wifi. There were many nice spaces, both inside and out, to spend time. But, like many of the other reviewers, our favorite was the terrace off the main bedroom. The grounds are lovely and well landscaped. And there is a nice pool and play area for children.

Oliver was the perfect host. He lives next door so is available if you need him. But he was careful not to intrude, so we went days without seeing him. My wife had a virus and fever from our prior trip to Morocco and Oliver was so kind as to go with us to the doctor to in town to interpret!

For us, the location was just about perfect for our monthlong exploration of La Alpujarra and Andalusia. Orgiva has all the necessities like grocery stores, restaurants, outdoor stores and medical facilities(!). There are other towns in La Alpujarra that are more charming and touristic. But Orgiva is a very good base for exploration. There are hikes to be made right out the door of the Cortijo. And many, many miles of reasonably well marked hiking trails 30 minutes drive in the the towns in the upper Alpujarra. We drove down to the coast one day (about 30 miles) and into Granada three days. The Alhambra is a sight not to be missed. We've travelled all over the world and it is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Be sure and get tickets well in advance (as in MONTHS in advance). It books out and I saw many people who arrived and were disappointed. Oliver will encourage the same and give you the weblink.

One thing I must mention is the wine with which Oliver has stocked the Cortijo. It's local and delicious (unlike some of the other Costa wines). He provides a bottle upon arrival and a good stock, for a small price, right in the villa if you want more.

We've travelled a lot and don't usually go back to the same place more than once. Cortijo el Potro might be an exception. I've already recommended it to friends. I'd encourage anyone to stay here.

Cortijo El Potro is just 1km away from the town Órgiva, with easy access by car and it only takes about 10 minutes walk to reach it. The property is located in the south-faced slopes of the impressive Sierra Nevada and just 30 minutes away from the beautiful sandy beaches of the Costa Tropical.

This region is characterised by its lush Mediterranean landscape with diverse and fertile vegetation, Europe´s cleanest starry sky and over 300 days of sunshine a year.

Sierra Nevada provides the region with fresh water, which finds its way through the ‘Acequias’ all along into the terraced fields. Acequias are ancient Moorish irrigation channels built into the rocks which cross the hilts all over the region. There are amazing opportunities to explore the stunning nature with pleasurable walks and hiking tours.

The closest town, Órgiva, is a lively, southern Andalusian town, picturesquely situated in a large valley in the middle of a wild mountain landscape, surrounded by rivers, olive and orange groves between Granada and the coast. It has numerous street cafes, bars, restaurants, terraces, small shops, a weekly market and an old-fashioned market hall with fish, meat and vegetable stands. Órgiva also has supermarkets, organic shops, banks, a post office and an emergency hospital.

Only 7 km away is the traditional spa-town Lanjarón, with its ancient but recently renovated baths offering various wellness services.

Granada is situated just 50km away from the house. Its marvelous and indescribable beauty with breathtaking Moorish-medieval palaces of the Alhambra makes this city one of the true gems of Europe.

There are three excellent golf courses within the radius of 30km from the property.

And there is also, of course, Sierra Nevada. This is Spain´s most modern ski resort and the one with the most sunny days in the whole Europe. It has an altitude between 2000m and 3400m over 110km of slopes. High snow, long and wide pistes, reasonable prices and a surprisingly comfortable atmosphere make Sierra Nevada an exceptional ski destination.

After a ski day, there will be a fire in the fireplace and a freshly squeezed orange juice waiting for you in the house. On request, you can also book an irresistible hot Finnish wood-fired sauna.

The privileged location of this property gives you the unique opportunity to choose between going skiing in the Sierra Nevada, enjoying the urban and cultural buzz of Granada, sunbathing on the beach, exploring the local nature or staying in the house having a barbecue in the garden.


The nearly 800-year-long period Moors and Arab culture has influenced the landscapes of Alpujarra more than any other Spanish regions. The culture of the Moors is reflected in the architecture as well as in the arts and crafts, music and cooking. But above all, the Moors cultivated the land, built terraces and irrigation ditches, and brought a variety of plants and fruits from the East that shaped the landscape until the present days. Órgiva is known for its millenary olive trees, some which were planted by the Romans, with their powerful, distinctive gnarled trunks. Today there is an interesting addition to the old traditional alternative culture of artists, craftspeople, organic farmers or shops, Arabian tearooms, yoga and flamenco schools and a Buddhist center.

Culinary highlights in Órgiva: Spain is a gourmet's paradise and a country that enjoys the pleasure of food. The cuisine of the Alpujarra lives from the natural flavor of its products due to the unique combination of different altitudes, temperatures, natural waters and microclimate. As such, its cuisine oozes of colorful and vibrant taste. There is a vast myriad of delicious stews (including the world-famous paella), air-dried mountain ham, salames, chorizos, mountain cheese, seafood, fresh vegetables, wine, Cava, Sidra, and other local dishes which are considered world-class foods. Many of these specialties are served as tapas (delicious nibbles that come with a drink – beer, glass of wine or sherry).

In case we are not able to rent the property within the dates cancelled by you at all or in part, there will be a maximum refund of the amount(s) that you have paid according the percentages below specified:

Until 30 days before arrival = 25% of the full price.
From 29 until 21 days before arrival = 60% of the full price.
From 20 until 14 days before arrival = 80% of the full price.
From 13 days onwards before arrival = 100% of the full price.
