About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Birdwatcher's retreat. Beautiful home in woodland setting next to a nature preserve. Sleeps 6. Three bedrooms: Master Suite with queen size bed , second bedroom with full size bed, third bedroom with two twin sized beds. Two baths. Back patio and a sun room off the kitchen. Utility room with washer/dryer. Wireless internet. Wood burning fireplace. Central a/c in kitchen, sun room and living room. All bedrooms conveniently have individual remote-controlled mini-split a/c wall-mounted units with a quiet mode setting. Nature center with trails is within a 10 minute walk. Sunday Farmer's Market is within a 5 minute walk (closed winters). Historic downtown Mystic and Olde Mystic Village 1 mile. Stonington Borough (village), 2 miles. Casinos and Rhode Island beaches within 30 minute drive. Roger Williams Zoo and Children's Museum (RI) within a 45 minute drive. In 2016, we put a new mattress set in the master bedroom. We also upgraded the paint in many rooms and installed new window treatments. In 2017, we installed new mini-split remote control a/c units in all bedrooms. We have gotten great feedback on the new a/c units ... our guests this year love them. We are very children friendly. Our house welcomes you! We are proud to be able to say that "Rockport Marine" (Maine boat builders and restorers) were guests at our house during the 2017 Mystic Seaport Wooden Boat Show, and their boat "Sunshine" took first place for power boats in the commercial-built class. Congratulations Rockport Marine! We also had a family from France who came this summer for a family reunion on Mason's Island. The children had a lemonade stand at their grandmother's house and raised $212, which they donated to the nearby Nature Center on behalf of our grandfather, John H. Goodman. We were so touched and grateful. Thank you to all of our guests for enjoying our home as much as we do.

About Mary Goodman

My niece, Liz, and her husband, Toby, co-own our vacation home with me. Liz and Toby live in the house I grew up in, which is just on the other side of the woods behind the John H. Goodman house. Liz is our local contact for guests, and she does all of the housekeeping. Toby does all of the grounds care, and I often wonder how he fits it in. I do all of the bookings and am the initial guest contact, which I enjoy. I am a Mystic native, and I had to move to San Diego for work. I miss Mystic and my family, and I plan on retiring here, in this house. I recently acquired a newer-model VW van, and I enjoy camping and hiking whenever I can. We love our house and we take pride in it.

Mary Goodman purchased this house in 2007

Why Mary Goodman chose Mystic

THE JOHN H. GOODMAN HOUSE

The land that this house is built on was owned by John H. Goodman, my paternal grandfather. He inherited the land from Mrs. N. Stanton Gates, who was the last Denison to live in the Denison Homestead (which is just up the road from the house). He was a master gardener and took care of the house and gardens for Mrs. Gates at the Denison Homestead for 15 years until she passed away, and the Homestead became a museum. He, his wife, and his two boys loved Mrs. Gates, and she was very kind to them all. He created and maintained a large cutting garden next to the Homestead barn, so that Mrs. Gates could always have fresh flowers during the warm season. He designed and created colorful, serene gardens surrounding the Homestead. I remember a beautiful scallop shell birdbath in the middle of one garden. He used to put sunflower seeds in an old, broken tobacco pipe, and as he stood outside with the pipe in his mouth, the chickadees would come and get the seed from the pipe bowl. He tended the orchard, cut 9 cords of firewood every year to heat the Homestead, and was Mrs. Gates chauffeur and trusted friend. When Mrs. Gates died on February 9th, 1941, she bequeathed my grandfather 10.5 acres of her land, part of which this house now stands upon and is surrounded by. She wrote in the will that “he had been so kind and helpful to her. “ He was the only person to inherit land from her, as all the rest went to the Denison Society and is now part of the Nature Center. The picture hanging over the fireplace mantel is the front door of the Denison Homestead, where love and kindness reigned. We hope that you can feel the spirit of all who came before, as you relax and enjoy our peaceful little house on this special piece of land.

What makes this house unique

This house has great energy and is very peaceful. I (Mary Goodman) always leave there relaxed and refreshed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

... our group thoroughly enjoyed your house. The location was perfect, the house was ideal for the show, and [we] especially enjoyed the AC controls for each area. Many thanks for making it so simple for us. BTW – our new construction boat won the professional built Concourse d’elegance. We were very pleased with that.

Warm, comfortable home set up for comfort

  • 5 of 5

Mary’s home Was perfect for our family of 4 adults and a teen. The communications about the home and what to do locally are very good and easy to follow. We had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and appreciated the thought that went into everything provided. The location is ideal and while rhe actual property is quiet and serene, it’s just minutes from everything in Mystic and Stonington. All The restuarants we tried had very good food and there are certainly plenty of them and with just about every type of food. We especially enjoyed the Daniel Packer Inn. We definitely recommend the John H. Goodman house for your Connecticut shore vacation.

Excellent vacation home!!

  • 5 of 5

Five of us stayed at this home. Three being in their late 70's. This home is huge inside and extremely comfortable. All one level. Beds were so comfortable with individual air conditioning. We liked the fact we could close the hallway door to the bedrooms for quiet in the morning for the early risers. The house was stocked with paper towels, sandwich bags, foil, etc basic staples which made huge difference that we had not thought to bring. We used the outdoor grill and patio every night. Within 5 minute drive of the seaport and shopping. MCquades grocery store was excellent. They boil fresh lobster for you and the cost is half of any restuarant with fresh oysters, mussels and their smoked whiskey salmon was superb, which we grilled. $18 for each of us for huge seafood meal. Overall a wonderful experience. Home is literally spotless. Washer/dryer with detergent provided was a plus. Cannot thank Mary enough for offering this home up for rental and she is wonderful to work with, all kinds of tips from in the house on things to do.

Repeat guest. LOVE this charming house!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for my oldest son's graduation and came back for my youngest son's graduation. The owner's are very professional and easy to work with. The house is pristine clean upon arrival, with a fresh and welcoming charm.

The rooms are large and the beds comfy. The home is filled with many lovely and thoughtful touches including children's toys, a basket of info on local places to visit, a nook to watch birds, a large tv, shelves filled with books and dvd's, and a lot of other neat things.

The backyard and patio are an oasis of peace. Lots of nature but within walking distance of civilization. This place has my highest recommendation.

Lovely house!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five adults loved this house so much. Everything is so well thought out. Very comfortable and clean. There are helpful notes and suggestions throughout the house. The house is well laid out and well situated for privacy in the house and yard. The location is fantastic, easy to get to all the sites, but far enough away to feel you are in a country setting. The nature preserve provided a beautiful backdrop for our children's wedding photos. Cant say enough about how happy we all were with our stay! Thank you, Mary and Liz!

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

An excellent location to get to the adjacent areas of Stonington and downtown Mystic. Located in a quiet, pleasant area surrounded by trees. The Amtrak train station is just minutes away. If you are unfamiliar with the area there is plenty of information on sightseeing, restaurants etc. provided by the owner of the property. Comfortably appointed home away from home.

Owner's Response: Hi Everyone. This is Mary. It is the end of the season (we close for the winter) and I was just going over all of the reviews and remembering the wonderful guests that have stayed with us. Thank you all for treating our vacation home as you own. I was surprised to see two 4-star reviews recently, and it worried me, because we almost always get a 5-start review. We strive to always provide 5-star service. The only thing that we are doing differently is that we started using online booking towards the end of the summer. I realize, in retrospect, that I allowed the automated online process to create a gap between myself and our guests. This is totally my fault ... I confess that I got busy at work and took advantage of the automated processes when booking the vacation house. For those of you who gave us a 4-star rating, I apologize that I was not more available. I'll do better next year. Until then, may everyone have a peaceful winter and a very good new year. We look forward to seeing you in 2018. All the best, Mary

Charming home in great location!

  • 5 of 5

This well cared for home was just perfect for 4 adults and two young girls. Stocked with plenty of books and toys for the kids, and room to relax for adults after sight seeing. (perfect location to easily reach the "sights." )Nice layout. Updated bathrooms. We had most meals out to get our fill of lobster! Though we loved the sunroom, the only suggestion I would have is maybe a bit larger dining set so we could have meals in as well. We would stay here again!

[Activities for families]

Activities for families with small children:

Mystic Aquarium. Small kids love this place. There are touch tanks, a sea lion show, a 4-D movie (not included in admission) and tons of things to look at. At the penguin café you can get 2 big pieces of pizza for lunch for less than $10, but you can also bring your own lunch and picnic there.

Penguin encounter at Mystic Aquarium. You sit in a circle and a penguin walks around to each person. Kids who love animals will absolutely love meeting a penguin. Call for reservations.

Mystical Toys. All small kids love a toy shop. This one specializes in toys that you can't find at the big box stores. It's right on the water. To make their day extra special there is an ice cream shop right across the street, and a candy shop just down the boardwalk.

Williams Beach. A small beach with no waves. There are covered picnic tables on site. There is also a playground.

Mystic River Park. A fenced-in playground right in downtown. Try to go early in the day or else the sun will heat up the playground equipment and it gets hot.

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. Right down the road! Small kids love walking around the pond on the trails as it has several wooden bridges. There is an activity called "night in the Meadow" that you can start by yourself. You sit in a darkened theater and listen to all the woodsy night noises while a friendly narrator tells you what you are hearing. Animals light up as they are introduced.

Activities for older kids:

Mystic Seaport. Make sure you go to the "Dead Horse" ceremony. Older kids usually get chosen to help haul it around the deck (not an actual horse). Don't skip the boat house. You can rent a boat for an hour or take a tour of the harbor. On the green you can try out old fashioned toys like a hoop and stick. Mystic Seaport is a living museum that transports you back in time, be sure to go into every building and ask questions. What do they recommend for a cough at the 1860 apothecary? What is cooking today at the Buckley House? Go on the Morgan and take 3 steps to the left. Look up. How can you tell this boat is a whaler? (Harpoons hanging directly over your head).

Kayak or paddleboard the Mystic River. There are two companies, both with excellent launching areas. You can rent a double kayak to put smaller kids in with an adult. You can kayak right up the river past the Seaport and explore the waterfront.

Beluga encounter at the Mystic Aquarium. There is a minimum age and height requirement. This is one of the only places in America that you can get in the water with a beluga whale. Reservations can be made months in advance and it fills up early.

Feed the Stingrays at Mystic Aquarium. It's only $3. You buy a ticket at the information booth and then exchange the ticket for stingray food (fish). The stingrays seem to like the corners of their tank best so try to stand there. Get ready for splashing!

Misquamicut beach. A gorgeous beach about 25 minutes away. Probably the most beautiful beach in New England, with big waves and three miles of white sand. Bathrooms and food concessions on site.

Half day sail on the Argia. The sunset sail is romantic and beautiful. The Argia schooner goes right past the lighthouses and shore sights of the Mystic area.

Mystic Fields of Fire adventure course. This is a massive ropes course in the woods of Mystic. They even have night courses under the stars if you like an extra challenge. Bring tick repellant and sunscreen. You can also play paintball.

Mohegan sun casino. Kids are not allowed on the casino gambling floor but the Casino of the Sky is full of shops and restaurants for the whole family. Walk around the 7-story indoor waterfall or shop at Dylan's candy bar. You have to park in the Indian Summer garage (go all the way down to the far end away from the exit) to use the elevators for children under 21.
