The Yellow Canary Villa is a few steps to white sandy beach and is located half way between Montego Bay and Ochio Rios, off the north coast.
The villa comes with our gourmet cook/housekeeper Miss Iris, assistant Sandra, Curtis gardener and Johnny our experienced driver who does the airport run and excursions.
Delicious foods are cooked daily at the villa from fresh local foods. Fish, lobster (the catch of the day) is delivered to our door by our local fishermen. Air conditioning, Wifi, cable TV, hammocks to sleep in all day long, areas to Lounge on in various parts of the garden and our friendly staff at the villa will make your stay a dream come true. Our Villa is a place to rest, sleep, read, eat and generate and is full of love and great foods.
The villa has an atmosphere of charm and privacy.
I live in London, England from a young age and I was schooled there. Recently I have been spending lots of precious time in Jamaica where I was born. I go back to London in the Spring staying there till Autumn.
I first visited Duncans Bay, 18 years ago with my young children and was walking along this quaint little lane which has a few cottages and directly in front the big ocean appearing through branches of almond trees which lined the banks in front of the beach. I bought one of the cottages. The living room opens out to the patio area which makes it light and airy. All the bedrooms have louver windows bringing in fresh sea breeze into the rooms.
The sea is turquoise blue and the beach is just wonderful with white sands. There is a green lawn that stretches along the beach which is great for children to play on. My children love this area and the beach and now bring their children to play here.
I love the flushed tropical scenery with an atmosphere of calm and peace here during weekdays. At weekends live music is performed by local artists at the Beach hut.
This area is ideal connection to many attractions and Montego Bay Airport is just 40 minutes drive.
Hello Bob and Dian
Sorry I was not around to greet you on arrival. My condolences to you both.
I am very pleased that my staff have treated you and your family party very well which you all deserved because they have reported to me that you were all so wonderful to them. Thank you so much for writing honestly about Yellow Canary and the staff and we hope you will all see us again when you are next visit Jamaica.
I trust that the funeral was not too sad.
Best wishes to you all.
Yellow Canary villa is one of the best in Duncan's Bay! Though I haven't been to Jamaica in several years, I've stayed at Yellow Canary several times in the past and recently returned for a visit. Miss Veronica was very accommodating and she has made several beautiful updates to the villa. The grounds all around the villa are beautiful and peaceful and the villa was as clean and wonderful as I remembered! Thank you for the new memories!
We had the best 15 days in Duncan's bay Jamaica. My husband research this beautiful hidden villa and decide to stay there. We were going to celebrate my grandmother 100th birthday. Unfortunately my grandmother passed away before her birthday, so we had to celebrate her life by burying her. We arrived at the villa on March 29th, 2016 and stayed through April 13th. The owner miss Veronica understood our situation so a few more family members had to join us to attend the funeral. Miss Iris understood after we explain it to her and she made sure all of us was comfortable and satisfied in ever way possible. The home was just beautiful, just a few steps to one of the most beautiful beaches you will ever experience. Our first night we request to have jerk chicken for dinner. OMG Miss Iris, she is one incredible lady, the food was delicious, she continues to impress us with amazing dishes for breakfast and dinner. She did amazing preparing delicious authentic Jamaican dishes, mind you I am a Jamaican, so I know what good food taste like. I have not been back since 2003 though. One of the favorite breakfast things she fixed was pineapple crapes yummmmmmmy. We request that a second time and it was just amazingly delicious. I believe it was the 5th day in our vacation when we had the pleasure of meeting Sandra, she is very nice and quiet until you get to know her. She prepare some fantastic Jamaican dishes for us as requested, she even goes out of her way to find things for us we request. Each and every one of us thoroughly enjoyed these two lovely ladies. I cannot forget about AMAZING Curtis. What an intelligent young man he is, he's very knowledgeable in every thing he was asked. Curtis made sure our beautiful hammock was put up along with the umbrella every morning. He continues to keep the outside clean at least twice a day, he even prepare delicious jerk chicken for us. He is quite a young man. He made sure to acknowledge each individual in our group and made us all feel special. We couldn't have ask for anyone else to make us feel more welcome in Jamaica. I would recommend this place to anyone, we would definitely return to yellow canary again. On behalf of my entire travel companions who all read my review is in agreement with this amazing service. We feel this should be more that FIVE STAR!!! Excellent. Dian & Bob Tripp
We had never been to Duncans Bay before, although we have been to Jamaica many times. This was our first time renting a house vs. staying at a hotel or resort. We loved it. It was my husband, myself and our closest friends (another couple). We loved having a house with a back terrace and front terrace and other rooms to hang out in, instead of just a hotel room or other areas in a resort. It was very private and relaxing. Johnny picked us up at the airport and took us to two restaurants during our stay, and drove us back to the airport. He also took us to Silver Sands to snorkel and any where else we wanted to go. On the way in he took us to the grocery store so we could stock up on some essentials. Sandra and Iris were wonderful and it was so nice not to be the one cooking!! We enjoyed fresh fish and lobster and local Jamaican cuisine all done to perfection. We looked forward to Curtis' arrival each day...he was wonderful to talk to and takes his job as gardener very seriously. We met Veronica upon our arrival and she couldn't have been nicer. It was very easy to communicate with her via email, prior to arriving and no problem at all working out all the details. The street is small and wonderfully quiet and peaceful. The beach is mere steps away, and despite being a public beach it felt very private the whole time we were there. We will definitely go back!!
Wow! Where do I begin, right from the airport we were greeted by the driver Johnny, energetic, warm welcome after a very long day of travelling that was appreciated. Thanks Johnny. Upon our arrival at the villa we were greeted with another very warm welcome Miss Iris. Really this lady is amazing!! Just let her do the cooking.(but you can also do your own grilling if you want) We so enjoyed our morning coffees and conversations with Miss Iris, we learned so much about Jamaica we never would have heard of staying at a hotel. I highly recommend going to the market at least once, a wonderful cultural experience, and with Miss Iris guiding the way it was awesome. Curtis the gardener can name every plant in his garden that impressed me, he always had a smile on his face, and conversation. This quiet little street is filled with friendly people, by day 2 we knew our neighbours (the ones who work there) on both sides of the street. Once you get past the hawkers on the beach the people here really want you to have a good time and enjoy the island. We left with very fond memories and new found friendships. We toured some, not near enough so we will have to come back and pick up where we left off. We toured the Rose Hall that was great, if you want dinner out there's a great little restaurant in Whitter Village Centre, can get good food and a beer it's called the Coffee Crème Café, it's small but the Jamaican owners are friendly had a good time there . The Martha Brae River ride is a must do, the scenery is breathtaking!! Don't forget your camera. The Jamaican bobsled in Ocho Rios is totally fun.The only thing I would recommend PLEASE get some new cushions for all of the outdoor furniture. The seating in the TV area could be a more comfortable sofa, and a back scratcher would be really handy. The beds are really comfy!! My tip for people pack insect repellent with a higher deet content, and some relief medication for bites. Not that I had a problem with insect bites, but my husband did.
Miss Veronica was a joy to deal with in making arrangements, since we went off season, she did make some adjustments to the cost, which frankly allowed us to be able to stay a couple more days. She is very responsive to all your emails.
Do not change money at the airport...wait to go into Duncans or change only a small amount for a day while you settle in. We had the pleasure of meeting Johnny, who was our driver and guide while there. He was very punctual, not to mention kept his vehicle very clean. If you make arrangements for him to take you somewhere, be sure to agree on cost prior to your excursion. He was gracious in taking us to the store close to the airport when we arrived, that store had many "American" items however, I would recommend taking to Miss Iris to plan meals before buying too much stuff.
This place is kept in immaculate condition. Ms. Veronica has a keen eye for picking the best staff! Our vacation would not have been as rich had it not been for Miss Iris, who made all of our meals (which were outstanding); shared local traditions; as well as suggested things to do. I left feeling like I had a new family member.
If you get the chance to have Miss Sandra cook for you, her jerk chicken was much better then the restaurants. Lest I not forget to mention Mr. Curtis who took care of the grounds and always had a smile to share, as well as stories about Jamaica.
I would recommend sending a shopping list in advance of your arrival, although Miss Iris did a great job of having somethings on hand. Make sure you buy PLENTY of bottled water, you will need it, Also try the High Mountain coffee, 1/2 the price of Blue Mountain coffee, yet the same flavor. Anything you need or want, talk to Miss Iris, she can let you know where to get the best of everything while saving you money.
There are local beachcombers who sell handmade wood carvings which were greatly appreciated when I returned. The beach is beautiful and pristine. Make sure you hit Leroy's down the beach at night for some reggae/drinks-they are a family run business who welcomes people with open arms.
Make sure you travel with a group at night...this is a third world country in a depressed economic condition. We were two women alone, so had to be very aware of our surroundings. Miss Iris; Johnny and Mr. Curtis all made sure we were safe and well cared for.
I would absolutely recommend this villa for your stay, as I plan to be back sooner rather than later.
This was one of my favorite vacations. If you like hanging at the beach and a very laid back vacation, you will love this place! Miss Iris made wonderful meals all week. I especially liked how she made her fish. If you are lucky enough to get Miss Sandra also, make sure she makes some banana cake. I suggest letting them do most of your grocery shopping since they know what to get. We went one time to check out the grocery store and that was a fun side trip. If there is any food from home that you can't do without, I suggest you bring it. Jamaican food is reasonable, but imported food is very expensive. We brought peanut butter, tea, crackers, granola bars and other snack items.
The house is very nice with wonderful gardens. We ran the A/C at night in the rooms but where comfortable during the day.
Make sure you check out Leroy's on the beach. We went dancing Saturday night.
Johnny took us to Ocho Rios for a day. We had a great lunch, tubing on the White River (my 10 yr old son's favorite activity) and visited the Fire Water Springs. Curtis showed us the local cave one morning which was interesting. The rest of the time we spent at the beach.
A great way to the real Jamaica in a safe environment instead of staying at an all-inclusive resort.
Nearby attractions and activities. Just 10 minutes drive from here is Falmouth Town which is an old historical town with lovely old buildings, churches, shops, a hospital, and a great market. Some of the largest cruse ships dock here 3 times weekly. Historical plantation houses such as Good Hope Great House and Rose Hall are worth seeing.
Dunns River Falls, Swimming with the Dolphins, and River Rafting Adventure are a must and are located in Ocho Rios.
