About The Owner

I grew up in La Jolla, California. I am a painter. I was invited to live in this apartment in 1989. The garden and apartment became the subject matter for most of my paintings. In 2004 I was able to purchase the apartment and then renovate it. It is still a work in progress. I have tried living in other areas of Paris but nothing compares to Saint Germain des Pres. The apartment could not be in a better location for enjoying Paris. I look forward to walking out my door every morning. My daughter and I are very happy to share our good fortune in being able to live in one of the most beautiful situations in Paris. We hope you enjoy our home as much as we do.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2004

Why The Owner chose Notre-Dame-des-Champs

I have long family ties with this property so it was my dream to one day buy it. The building is magnificent, the location ideal, the ambiance sublime. Very quiet as it is at the back of a luxuriously green garden, totally protected from city noise.

What makes this apartment unique

This apartment is located in the heart of the city yet once you enter the street doors the quiet resounds. All the calm of a country retreat with the added plus of walking to anything cultural or commercial, from museums, churches, to restaurants, boutiques, and markets. All of the best of Paris is a short walk away. Multiplicity of public transport options from taxis, buses, velib bicycles to metro lines, all steps away.

Just as charming and quirky as you think it is

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here as a family of 5 with three teens (so two were on the day beds in the living room). The famous Poilane is across the street, the Grande Epicerie is a few minutes' walk away, and numerous exquisite pastry shops are within easy reach. The nearest metro stations are likewise a couple minutes' walk away and there are also buses leaving from near the station such as the one to the Louvre. The immediate neighborhood is charming, and about a ten minute walk will take you up to the heart of the part of St. Germain best known to tourists (e.g. the famous cafes, the cour de commerce St. Andre, etc).

The apartment was a decent size for being in the middle of Paris -- it fit our family comfortably although with five of us we did have the two in the living room on daybeds (which were not pullouts and were comfortable per the kids). It is clearly someone's home rather than a sterile hotel-style place, which adds to the charm but might not be right for someone who prefers the hotel style. And along that same line, there are some quirks of the plumbing to be aware of, all written up helpfully in the manual for visitors. I found these aspects to be an interesting look at what life in Paris might actually be like, but again, someone who prefers to stay in a more hotel-like environment might be better off elsewhere.

In summary, this is a charming apartment in a charming area with a decent amount of space for its location, and we very much enjoyed our stay here.

Charming home in super location!

  • 5 of 5

My two daughters and I loved Kathleen’s charming home for its cool, quiet location in the hottest area of Paris. Across the street from a fabulous bakery, close to the metro in a neighborhood filled with beautiful shops and great restaurants.

Owner's Response: I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Having the renown Poilane bakery, and now their little restaurant, just across the street makes mornings a special treat. I hope that you tried their apple tarts which are a favorite in my family, along with their raisin and nut breads. We are definitely spoiled with restaurants, boutiques, and gourmet grocery stores. I would be most happy to welcome you back on your next trip to Paris as my neighborhood is in constant evolution which so much to explore! Thank you for your kind review.

I felt French ...

  • 5 of 5

Staying on Rue Cherche Midi in someone's apartment made my husband and I feel immersed in French culture. Miss Marshall's art and vast library surrounded us. The charming apartment featured authentic French architectural details, and the neighbors in the building were residents. We never felt we were in a 'rental', and we tried to respect the privacy of the full timers.

The neighborhood was to a human scale; we ate breakfast every morning at the famous Poilane bakery across the street, we ate twice at the local bistro called Cherche Midi and we were within walking distance of the metro stop and loads of shopping and other restaurants in the 6th arrondissement.

The accommodations were very roomy for two people and we would love to go back sometime. One note, however, there are stairs without a railing and some of the plumbing is delicate. If you have never lived in an old home with quirky systems, this would not be a good fit. Happily, none of this fazed me or my husband. The whole trip was magic.

Lovely Paris Apartment

  • 4 of 5

Great location that we enjoyed for five days in Paris. Our host was very helpful and did a great job in communicating the unique aspects of this apartment.

We had a young child with us and the rules of the apartment of being quiet and the use of the garden had us constantly shushing her in fear we would get into trouble. While it worked out ok I would make sure that a child in this apartment was able to follow direction well.

I would recommend this apartment to a friend.
