Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Arroyo Hondo - Tree Top Retreat

2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 6

Tree Top Retreat - Contemporary Secluded Mountain Home - Designed & hand built by Owner/ Architect / Engineer with Spectacular wrap around window Views

This "Guest House" consists of two stories with a first floor bedroom & adjoining bathroom, foyer and laundry room. The second floor hosts the fully-equipped kitchen / living area + bedroom & adjoining bathroom and was built by the owner / designer / architect / engineer as the family's home while he "hand built" their residence (now the secluded main house) which is well separated and offering total privacy on the 13 acre secluded retreat. For guests who wish, owners are available to provide sightseeing tips and information on local activities.

The retreat, surrounded by pinions and cactus at an altitude of 8000 ft. on a 13 acre property abutting Kit Carson National Forest, offers thousands of acres of hiking and exploring.

The floor to ceiling windows in the living room/kitchen of this unique and inviting guesthouse provide a spectacular view over a sea of trees to the town of Taos, the mesa and the mountains beyond.

The view includes mountains over 85 miles away. From the lving room, top floor bedroom and the balcony (accessed by two sliding glass doors) guests have two different breathtaking mountain view. sunsets and sunrises. Both are glorious.

In addition to window wall panoramic views, the grande stone "wood burning" fireplace competes for close second place. Each bedroom has one queen size bed. The first floor bedroom and the living room each have a sleeper sofa allowing 2 additional guests (most comfortably children) for a maximum total of 6 guests.

As with the house itself, the furniture has been designed, hand crafted by the owner. All of the floors are Saltillo tile and, when required, provide luscious radiant heat. Passive solar provides most of the heat in the winter and window overhangs protect the house from excessive heat during summer months. Water is solar heated on the roof adding to this eco friendly home.

Guests find this home to be a welcoming, relaxing and comfortable retreat after a day of skiing, boarding, hiking, shopping, gallery hopping, sight seeing, or enjoying any other activity that this remarkable area has to offer.

We invite you to come and enjoy the New Mexico sun in this rare and comfortable mountain retreat.

As this home is on a 3 mile well maintained hard packed gravel road and we are subject to a variety of weather conditions, we recommend that you have a four-wheel drive vehicle during winter months. Summer months require no special recommendations.

Reviewer Comments:

The mildly arduous trek up the mountain wasn't too bad once we did it a time or two. House has tremendous views and is roomy. Old cars sitting in back kind of bummed the view but after dark wasn't an issue. If you have trouble climbing stairs this isn't an ideal place for you. Hot tub was awesome, seclusion was welcome and a coywolf wandered by the first night. He and his friends sang to us other nights. Overall a great place. They even bought us a pair of fans to manage the heat wave going on during our visit.

Reviewer Comments:

Not really camping at all, the accommodations were very nice, but what we really enjoyed was the remote location of Tree Top Retreat. We loved hiking in the adjacent national forest and the sound of coyotes yapping. The patio provided an in-forest experience for eating and visiting while the upstairs provided a view of the mountains and Taos lights in the distance. The property was exactly as it appears in the photographs. We hope to return!

This was our fifth stay at this property and as before it was all it was advertised to be. The property is unique in location, design and views. All but two categories get a gold star. We had stayed in summer previously and the weather was always cool. This time the weather was not cool and the house is not air conditioned so temps got up to 90 degrees in the daytime inside. The house design incorporates steel roofing components that expand when hot and contract when cooling and the process results in "creaking and popping sounds late into the night. I would highly recommend the property for winter stays.

Reviewer Comments:

Our first 5 days of our stay were nice. The property was very clean. The views were beautiful and it was very secluded. That's great if you just want to hang out and not go anywhere, but we were on the go every day, so it took a while to get out of the mountains. The main problem was that on the 5th night our water got shut off. We went to bed thinking we didn't want to both anyone late at night, but in the morning, we still didn't have water, and there were ants everywhere in the house, so we called John twice and the phone was not answered. We left a message, but a phone call was not returned until 3pm (we called at 5:45 and 8:00am). We missed this phone call as we were driving in the mountains and our reception was not great. Since we did not get a return phone call in a timely manner, we decided to leave a day early, as we couldn't stay in a house with no water. We did notice that one of the toilets was running and we mentioned this to John the night that the water was shut off. After a few missed phone calls, we never did speak with anyone to see why the water was turned off. It didn't matter at that point as we were already headed home. It was a disappointing end to a nice vacation.

A great week was had here. The house is in a secluded area that is peaceful, relaxing and has some great views of Taos valleys. You can walk through Kit Carson National Forest, to the Kiowa Village and DH Lawrence Ranch. Staircase is steep but has the same angles and widths that millions of townhouses built in Northern Virginia/Maryland have so no problem here. Would highly recommend the house for a peaceful getaway and a jumping off point for sightseeing viewing the area, would not be a good jumping off point for Taos Ski Valley/Red River/Eagle's Nest ski areas. Overall, our vacation crew had a wonderful time.

Reviewer Comments:

Several things contributed to a less than desirable experience. When we arrived the house had a rotten egg smell. After not having hot water for two days we realized the smell was gas from the pilot light. Both my wife and son fell on the stairs. They are very steep with a shallow tread. (do not meet code). The roof creaks at night. It sounds like rocks falling on the roof every 10-15 minutes. This make it very difficult to get a good nights sleep. Finally, you should know the home is located 15 minutes from the intersection of 230 and the rim road. Approx 10 minutes are on a gravel road. The view is breath taking, but the home does not meet the Premier Property standard.
