Good place, but A/C was not effective.

  • 3 of 5

The condo was great, but rather hot. Thank goodness for the ceiling fan in the living room and the stand up fan in the the downstairs bedroom because the two A/C units were not effective in cooling the place down. They were in good working condition, but are both located near the floor in the bedrooms and are blocked by the beds. We tried opening the windows and doors, but we’re still unable to get any air flow even when the trade winds were blowing. The good news is that the beach is within walking distance and a great way to beat the heat!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your opening statement of “The condo was great….” And yes this has been a really hot year – it is mid summer, it is Hawaii and nationwide has experienced extremely hot spring and summer this year. Also as the guest wrote: “the good news is that the beach is within walking distance and a great way to beat the heat!” Also one of the two condo swimming pools is 30 seconds away from the condo I would say. There are 2 air conds, one each sleeping areas. None of Turtle Bay Condos (Kuilima East and Kuilima West) has central air conditioning capabilities and so is cooled by window units, ceiling fans and standing fans. So enjoy the condo, the beach, the pool and North Shore many outside fun –including hiking and biking and horseriding trails.

Equivalent to NO Air Conditioning

  • 2 of 5

When I searched for a property in Hawaii, I specifically used the search criteria for A/C, because I have been there before and know how hot it can be in June. This property has 2 small window units outside of the 2 bedrooms (one is in the attic, with the airflow totally blocked by the vaulted ceiling cover outside that goes down all the way to the floor level of the attic). As a result, the cooling is slow and totally limited to the bedrooms only. When you cook in the kitchen, it's always hot, esp. around dinner time. The property owner said to use the fans and open the windows. Other than the screen door (I guess nobody would dare leave the main door open and only lock the screen door while away - even the owner suggested opening the main door only when there are people are inside the condo), there is only one slit of window in the main bedroom that could provide any circulation directly with the balcony door/window. There are also 2 stacked side windows in the attic. We tried opening ALL of them, and let the fans working at full speed, while we were there, and the "cooling" was still not enough to allow one to fall asleep. I sweat so much while inside the condo, and had to swipe sweat repeatedly from my chin, that the skin there started to chafe after only a couple of days.

On the plus side, the owner communication during booking was prompt. The property is at a nice and quite location on the north side, with many famous beaches nearby. I guess it could be a good location in the "winter".

Owner's Response: THERE IS AIR CONDITIONING (2 air conditioners 2 ceiling fans, 2 floor fans described fuller below) and many have stayed in the condo and I have not received another complaint about AC. And it is hard to believe that one would sweat as described. If the guests had simply contacted me I would of come there and arrange for repairs if needed by professionals. I lived in the condo myself for years and most of the time I didn't have any AC but put them in when I began vacation renting the condo for guest rental. I just received this review after 2 additional groups had stayed there and I heard nothing from these subsequent guests about air con not working. I am sorry that the condo seemed too warm for these complaining guests. NONE of the condos at turtle bay (east and east side) have central AC, rather as mentioned there are AC units in windows, ceiling fans, floor fans, plus trade winds so guests can decide on the amount of AC they need. At my condo which is two stories inside, ground floor and vaulted ceiling into a upper, loft bedroom with full bath, bookcases, closet, desk and dresser, (good size room). There is one AC in upstairs loft bedroom and a second AC in the downstairs bedroom. There is no attic (perhaps she confused my condo with another she stayed in.) In addition to AC in windows there are 2 ceiling fans in loft bedroom and in the living room. The living room ceiling fan is right off open kitchen. There is also 2 portable floor fans you can place where ever you wish. This has worked well for past guests and I regret that this was not ample for these guests. Hopefully they had days at the pool and the beach and outside cafes right at the hotel and condo outside lanai. As to windows, In downstairs bedroom the one wall is all windows with a sliding glass door, and additionally a side box type window. At front door is a security, screen door. One of livingroom walls is a sliding glass door that leads to lanai plus a set of four louver type windows in livingroom and a set of 2 good size louver windows at top of stairs to loft and a small bedroom window right above AC in loft. When trade winds blow and they do a lot, opening sliding doors and windows and front door cool condo nicely. If you wish further info on air conditioning or other questions, please contact me. Aloha Trish

a great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The weather wasn't great for a lot of beach time, but the pool was wonderful for the family to enjoy some water time. Most everything we wanted to do was in the area so travel time was easy. Trish, the owner was easy to work with and very helpful with any questions I had. My family truly enjoyed our stay.
